Watch ad-free! Kevin Magnussen thought Formula 1 was going to be the proverbial piece of cake when he finished second on his grand prix debut.
He came into F1 as a highly-rated rookie after winning the hugely-competitive Formula Renault 3.5 championship in 2013, landing a top-team drive.
As he put it in our interview with him at the end of the 2024 season, “you come in with McLaren and you think you’re going to be winning championships”.
But it didn’t work out like that. In fact, finishing third on-the-road and being promoted to second at Albert Park in 2014 after Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo’s disqualification was as good as it got for Magnussen in F1.
