Franco Colapinto has joined Alpine as a test and reserve driver on a multi-year deal in a move that makes him an obvious threat to Jack Doohan, who will at least start the season racing for the team alongside Pierre Gasly.
F1’s a notoriously ruthless place, especially where the driver market’s concerned - just ask last year’s in-season victims Daniel Ricciardo and Logan Sargeant.

Poor Jack is clearly a dead man walking at this point. Even though I'm generally of the view that professional sports is meant only for the toughest and sportspersons have to suck it up and take the bad with the good since they get paid sums that plebs like myself can only dream of, this seems an extraordinarily horrible situation to be in, where Jack's not even been given a chance to prove himself before his place on the grid gets questioned. Having signed Franco, Briatore might as well sack Doohan now and put him out of his misery as, unless he outperforms Pierre in every single race, I don't really see Jack still in an F1 car at the end of the year. Moreso because of the commercial backing that Franco has. None of this will be made any better by the Sky cameras constantly panning to Franco if Jack makes the slightest mistake. Even though I'll be cheering Max on at Albert Park later this year, I'm definitely going to have a banner out making my thoughts clear on the way Briatore is treating Jack.
