Ad-free F1 pod: Ranking the Top 10 drivers of 2024

It's time for our regular end of season episode, as Mark Hughes, Scott Mitchell-Malm and Ben Anderson join Edd Straw to countdown The Race's Top 10 F1 drivers of 2024.

As ever, we created our list by asking each of our guests to rank all of the drivers on the grid, with their scores then combined to produce a top 10. But which drivers made it in and who missed out? Are there any big surprises or will the top 10 mirror the drivers' championship standings?

Listen in to find out and then let us know what you think!

If he hadn't achieved a podium then, it would have been an issue

I was surprised how high up Alonso was in the combined Top 10 - he only made 10th in mine (and even then for a portion of the season, he wasn't even in the Top 10, based on my individual race scores). Like Ben(?) I felt there was a little too much of the belligerent Fernando this season. My own Top 10 had the same 10 drivers as it turned out 1) Verstappen 2) Norris 3) Leclerc (Lando and Charles having been tied on scores but I gave it to Lando on countback) 4) Russell 5) Piastri 6) Sainz 7) Gasly 8) Hulkenberg 9) Hamilton (which I thought maybe I was being harsh - clearly not!) and 10) Alonso. But an enjoyable Top 10 as always!

Or if Lewis never signed with Merc and it was an all-Nico lineup

It also feels like the top ten were fairly consistent throughout the whole year, but most drivers did reasonably well throughout the year. The 97 top ten only had about 5 drivers who were worthy of top ten status

Personally thought that Hulkenberg was excellent this year. Makes you wonder what he would have achieved had he been given the Red Bull seat for 2021.

Mark Martin

It feels almost easier to get consensus on a top 10 this year. Had similar picks myself. Maybe due to the extra data we have nowadays

Mark Martin

Its very interesting to hear the top 10s of 2024 and 1997 in quick succession, especially the consensus on the identities and positions of the drivers. Seeing how well Sainz drove, it almost feels unfair that he's "only". It's just a shame that four people did a (marginally) better job.
