⭐️ Bring Back V10s: Ranking the Top 10 drivers of 1997

To celebrate the end of our 1997 Revisited series, and to get you in the mood for season 11 of Bring Back V10s, we've ranked the drivers from that classic F1 season.

Following the format of our usual top 10 episodes, Glenn Freeman is joined by Matt Beer, Ben Anderson and Edd Straw to debate (or argue!) about who should be included, and which drivers did the best job over the course of an epic year of racing.

Really enjoyed this series!

I hope that one day we get Bring Back v8s just so I can hear Glenn's rant about Alonso's drop off at the end of that season! 🫠🤣

CSF

My own list (prior to listening to the pod) was: 1) M Schumacher 2) Villeneuve 3) Coulthard 4) Hakkinen Panis (like Edd, out of principle I don't count drivers who don't complete most of the season, regardless of circumstance - if I was like Glenn/Matt/Ben, he'd have been fifth) 5) Herbert 6) Frentzen 7) Fisichella 8) Berger 9) Barrichello 10) Hill Quite pleased that my list isn't significantly out of kilter - my "stats" approach had Alesi in around 7th place but on vibes I decided there was no way he should be in my Top 10 (primarily due to Australia and Italy) whereas at least Berger actually won a race. But the aggregate top 10 feels about right tbh

Glenn's snubbing of MSC almost resulting in the largest miscarriage of justice since Abu Dhabi 2021 (probably)

I wanted to share with you all Francisco Santos 1997 Top 10 (Brazilian journalist who wrote excellent yearbooks from the mid 80s to 2008, I have all the ones edited in Spanish from 1992 except the final one): 10. Johnny Herbert 9. Damon Hill 8. Gerhard Berger 7. Eddie Irvine 6. Jean Alesi 5. Heinz-Harald Frentzen 4. Mika Häkkinen 3. David Coulthard 2. Jacques Villeneuve 1. Michael Schumacher

Go with it! (Glenn 😅)

The Race

At the time I remember railing against Schumacher’s wet weather drives because he always had a spare car with a full and perfected wet weather setup to hand; whereas everyone else had to adapt a dry car to wet. I always thought therefore Schumacher’s “brilliance” was in fact an unfair advantage over everyone else. Not sure if that argument holds up nowadays or not

Glenn really took this ranking personally and I loved it 😂😂

Disc Infiltrator

Glad you liked it. We can’t wait to do another one

The Race

We’re excited to put it out for a vote!

The Race

We’ll ask producer Jonny

What a superb series. I became obsessive with F1 two years later than this (hoping 1999 is the next one they do like this :D), so having a race by race recap of the entire season was brilliant. Well done everyone who worked so hard on this. Thank you.

Mr. H.

Can't wait to see which season will be next.

OC

Really enjoyed this episode and I have thought for a long time that this season is a bit of an outliner for Alesi. Benetton might have been better keeping him alongside Fisi for 1998

Mark Martin

I found this one really difficult to rank, so looking forward to hearing how you guys tackle it!

Jimmy Linn

Calling it before I start, Ben's top 3 is Hill, Sospiri and Magnussen

Michael Maclean

Also, was that music from The Day Today running under the final countdown?

Andrew Sillett

Brilliant stuff. As noted at the end, so many seasons are judged and filed away when the emotions are too raw - this one really benefited from a dispassionate (pace Glenn, pace Ben) review.

Andrew Sillett

Thanks Kieron, we already can’t wait to do another season next year!

The Race

It’s very much the theme of the episode!

The Race

My argument last week that there was such wild inconsistency means this top ten should have a maximum of five drivers seems to have been borne out. I could feel Edd's pain in 5-10.

Simon Emms

I'm now 90 seconds in. Thank you Ben. You're the gift that keeps on giving

Simon Emms

I'm writing this in the first minute of the podcast - I'm very much looking forward to Ben's well-argued idiocy.

Simon Emms

Just fantastic, so great to go back to these years with the benefit of hindsight. Keep it up!

Kieron
