Early Access: Why "Welcome To The Black Parade" is Great

Love this one! Took me right back to the College Canteen (in the UK, so about 17 years old?) where most of the students were emo/punk/goth/indie and you can bet someone had requested MCR on the jukebox at least a few hundred times 🤣

Amanda-Leigh

I like how you likened this song to Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. I'd never considered it before, but now it seems so obvious!

Nikki J

I love this series so much!! 😊

Aubrey Danielle

Ahh this song is such a classic!! I was lucky enough to see MCR in concert, but I don't remember Gerard Way losing his voice. He does put a lot of heart into his performance though, as well as a lot of screaming lol so maybe that's why he would lose his voice sometimes I guess? Thanks for the early access and I hope you have a great week ahead!

Miriam

All the feels on this!! Gerard Way is highly underrated as a singer/songwriter - I saw him live when he released his solo album Hesitant Alien and it's frickin awesome. Of course his talents don't end at MCR Umbrella Academy is based on Gerard's Comic Book and from that his version of Hazy Shade of Winter.... I'm not fan girling at all 😂

Clair (Teampanda)

I loved this so much!!!! The song is such an incredible juxtaposition of rawness and musicianship. Amazing. Really enjoying this series.

Shiny

That was awesome!!!! Had not remembered this, been too long. Thank you for the insight. Can relate to last quick comment. No need to elaborate. Too quick assessment, though. Would have liked a little more, still enjoy seeing your mind work...hearing you talk. Thank you ✌️😂❤️❤️❤️

I was so excited about this one - sooo good, Joel! The nostalgia of 15 years ago, the MTV era! English is my second language too, I can relate to just enjoying the musicallity sometimes lol Thanks for the early access and have a great weekend!

i definitely agree with that take, actually that’s a pretty common reason former hate group members have cited for why they originally joined; looking for a community! and yeah it really does seem like the post cancellation options are to just disappear, or a self fulfilling prophecy of pandering to the people who like them bc of what got them cancelled

michelle

Wow just read up on it. Not good. Sometimes I think these people start doing bad things just for people to SEE them, or to find a new community. It’s how I think of a lot of people who get cancelled or widely criticized too, they go further down that hole

Joel Berghult

ahh the instant goosebumps!!🥰 ijbol when you said this played in clubs! that’s sooo antithetical to my experience with MCR… a depressed 12 y/o😅lol ugh the do or die part is still my favourite!🥹 huh wow i’d, kind of embarrassingly, never really picked up on the religious symbolism there, listening as a raised-pretty-secular kid also i know we don’t get political on here but for what it’s worth bob bryar was unfortunately not the best person

michelle

I love this dive! I didn't realize this song came out the year I graduated High School lol!😅 A bit of nostalgia for me! This song always puts me in a good mood. I remember driving to work for my shift at Forever 21 and would always smile when I heard it on the radio!🥰

I was more into Yellowcard during my emo-punk era, but I have to admit that this song is such an anthem. There’re a few other songs from their Three Cheers album that I really like as well. But like you said, there're not a lot of songs that sound like this that really make it in the contemporary music scene anymore... MCR will always remind me of an ex from around high school to early college days. I introduced this band to him, and they have become one of his most favorite bands ever since. There's a song "I Don't Love You" from this same album that was kinda our "departing song" haha. Looking back, it was so overly dramatic. Like, we didn't even hate each other that much or anything, we just grew apart. Well…that's a tale from my emo era for ya 🙈

Bua (mintteafortwo)

Hehe, for me it kinda depends on where to “time-travel” too: some periods on the timeline are brighter than the others. And those people, maybe their brains just did better job at forgetting sad stuff:)

N M

I also mainly have sad emotions from nostalgia lol. It puzzles me how so many people have just positive associations. The music is sick tho!

Joel Berghult

Thank you, Joel, for this short trip down memory lane. The immense thought and effort put into this song makes it truly remarkable. I would be interested if you ever touched on one of the earliest Tokio Hotel songs from the same era. I still enjoy listening to them.

Ornela

Didn’t like this song (it’s a crime I know), but you‘ve just made me respect it. And rush to listen to the music I used to constantly have on my headphones around that time. That was a bad idea, because now I’m almost crying as it’s too depressing:))

N M

Myspace.. I remembered schoolmates using it to promote their bands and upcoming gigs. Also I get to know other music subcultures like ska and shoegaze. Not sure if MCR is aware, in some Asian cultures, there's a music band during a wake. This goes on for days, afterwhich the band leads the funeral procession before burial to ward off evil spirits. Looking back at the visual concept for this song, I kinda understand the last passage of rites references in the lyrics. I like how your striped shirt matches MCR outfits on the thumbnail. Lol. Wishing you a great weekend, Joel~~💜

I was such a big fan of mcr's first two albums, I hated this song when it came out but it has grown on me or I grew out of being a hipster teen that call bands sell outs as soon as they get popular 😆

Katie O'Sullivan

A few weeks ago I actually heard the ending to this song (i know this song - i have never heard it all the way through) and it’s such a masterpiece. There’s so much going on that you could miss it! His voice on top of it all is epic as hell. Just really good

Shauna

Thanks for the early access, once again so entertaining and informative! 🙂 It's cool to see when the singers are so passionate and so behind what they do. His theatrical performance really works well on this types of songs. I was listening more Green Day back in those days, so I probably missed the MCR train a bit, even though I liked this song a lot too. I should look into that album now... Idk why but there's something about the marching band drums (that are probably called something more professional 😆) played with that certain rhythm that sounds cool in the genre of these types of emo/rock songs. Very powerful effect. It's nice to hear the instruments separated like this, so that one can hear all the details. Wishing u a very nice weekend 🙂

This breakdown is one of the main reasons I started watching your channel. There is a major gap in my music listening and the emo era mostly passed me by. It is great to be able to learn about it now. And Jiva is a monster getting these videos edited quickly, providing extra info and humerous flourishes.

Cas

Immediate transport back to my high school years. Forgot how much I really loved this song!

Becky Lorion

Do I remember MySpace…pssshhhh Loving these breakdowns!! ❤️
