Wrote this for an upcoming video, lemme know your thoughts! It needs a lot more production, alex is on it. Inspiration was this reddit post of a guy getting his first apartment after being homeless for 16 years:

https://www.reddit.com/r/MadeMeSmile/comments/rt5ra5/after_16_years_of_homelessness_i_finally_have_my/?utm_term=1681564253&utm_medium=post_embed&utm_source=embed&utm_name=&utm_content=header

He wrote about having been a meth addict in California with deep depression and dark thoughts. I tried to turn it around to be something about appreciating the little things, as he is appreciating this first apartment.

Lyrics:

16 years under the sky

Now it's time to say goodbye

To the life that hurt him to the bone

And I realize the way

I take for granted every day

That in the end I can come back home

Never being grateful

If it isn't special

Feeling all this pressure

Friends are doing better

Feel like I am lesser

Give up on the pleasure

Until I catch up which might just be never

We're all told to be extraordinary

But most of us will be ordinary (and that's ok)

What's the point if I forget what happiness can feel like

Workaholic, I forget what's constituting real life

Wish I could snap out of it and do whatever feels right

I could probably be just fine

16 years under the sky

Now it's time to say goodbye

To the life that hurt him to the bone

And I realize the way

I take for granted every day

That in the end I can come back home

I feel like my heart's been broken

Since I was a little kid

Just stuck running through the motions

Don't feel like I ever lived

It looks like my time is over

Don't know how it got this way

My parents are getting older

And I've thrown my life away

16 years under the sky

Now it's time to say goodbye

To the life that hurt him to the bone

And I realize the way

I take for granted every day

That in the end I can come back home

You love 7/8!

The vibe of the whole is on point. Your range has really come together for this and is really a smooth transition. Regret is hard to swing in the other direction. I get a sense of gratitude, realization, and understanding. Very nice to bring in with a little hope for future. The simple acoustic guitar accompaniment is a very nice touch. The mike you choose with a slight echo, is also a good choice. The hollowness of past with an uncertainty for the future. Really a wonderful overall attempt, but feel you hit the nail on the head. Thank you

Gayle

I am a lyrics person and these lyrics combined with the soft campfire guitar really made me feel all the feelings. Exited to hear the final version of this one!

Lebuwi

So much ear candy in a one song :) loved the vibe, takes me back to late 90's early 00's when boy bands did many slow ones with chord progressions like this. Took me back to my early youth. Your voice is so soothing here. It complements the song perfectly.

Pilamitar

* Chill Home Noises * Great tune & lyrics, the individual behind the inspiration should be proud as to how far they've come. Relatability in most of these lyrics. Tack for sharing Mate 🐺🐾

PhantomFidget

Good song, I like👌 It takes me to the storytelling universe of "The ballad of Paul K" by McFly. It bothers me a bit that 'extraordinary' rhymes with 'ordinary' tho. Could 'extraordinary' perhaps be 'legendary' or something similar, with a little bit of tweaking?

Sofie G

Really enjoyed the softer side of your voice. ❤️ this is gonna be stuck in my head all day at work now lol thank you for sharing, Joel this was really good 😊

Leah Miranda

I like it, I always appreciate your voice more on calmer songs, it gives me time to take in how beautiful it sounds

Adina

Oof same ❤️

Leah Miranda

A bit of a different, softer, vibe in this one. I love it. ❤️ Would definitely like to see this one out!

Dannielle O'Neill

This definitely got me in my feelings!! I can relate, it’s hard not to compare yourself to others who you think are doing better, while still being grateful where you currently are in life. I feel like the music matches the lyrics perfectly. 🙂

Miriam

As most people said, I too love the cozy vibes of it. Can't wait for the finished mixed song, would love if you went either full melodine vochorder (don't come for my spelling please) style with super stacked lyrics in the chorus or totally leaned in to the country vibes the verse gives (at least to me 😊). Either way I'm sure y'all turn out an amazing song, it's already great in its 'raw' form 😊😍👍

Nataliekey

Love those bands!!

Joel Berghult

lol that might be my fav melody too

Joel Berghult

I’m listening again and realising that line at around 1.35 is tickling my brain in the most perfect way oh my god?? I can’t stop listening to it lolll

Rainbowz Grace

Aubrey Danielle

I get what you both mean. Doesn’t matter since I’m gonna credit anyway. Ronan is a bit of a different case since that’s about that story, this is just 3 lines in a long song. Still, wanna credit :) feels right

Joel Berghult

Jesus Joel, not me crying at work. 😳

Heather Lynn

I completely understand what you mean! The lyrics and the story are raw, I kinda feel like the vocal should be too xx

Hayley

😭 I'm not crying, you're crying 😭

Hayley

Completely disagree. Joel shouldn't take credit for his story. Taylor Swift gave Maya Thompson for writing Ronan. That's messed up if Joel writes a song that is not his story and take credit for someone else misfortune.

Stephanie Bruso

This is soo relatable and beautiful.. also explains that poem you shared.. and I love the slower swaying pace… 1.. critique that might be a just me thing or something that Alex is working on… I dunno… the chorus’s backing vocals… The effect on them sounds like it has a weird robotic/mechanical “enhancement” to them or something 🤔… it throws me off.. and seems to take away from the overall umph of the song Does that make sense? Once again.. could just be a me thing 🤷🏼‍♀️

Airyckah Lane

I’m not so sure this needs a direct credit.. people take inspiration from stories all the time. This is a vague reference that could apply to many people

Airyckah Lane

So beautiful and cozy. Definitely heart-warming. The lyrics are so genuine and hit you right in the feels.

Courtney Walker

will def credit! The only part that's his story is the first 3 lines in the chorus, but yeah agree with you! Would wanna give him a % of any revenue

Joel Berghult

You should make sure you give him a writing credit since it's his story

Stephanie Bruso

The writing is heartbreaking and therapeutic at the same time.. beautiful 😢 The whole song is gorgeous, I legit cried. The pressure of time is very relatable (to choose or even know what's most important and be fully there), but it's also so hard to be fully happy in a world where everyone (so many) doesn't get to be happy or, as in the song, doesn't get their needs met. The small joys I appreciate and love the most ❤️

Nina L

Beautiful 💕

Brandt

I really enjoy hearing the emotion in your voice and meaning of the song. Like how it's okay to just be a normal person and not to overwork yourself. Also, about how parents are getting older, a reminder to spend time with them while we can. Knowing what you value in life and the importance how someone spends their time. I'm already picturing a music video for this song in my mind! Thank you for sharing this with us Joel🥰

Naomiskyyy

Anyone else find it oddly relaxing? I feel so peaceful now, the song is so nice 💕

Rainbowz Grace

Really lovely and very, very true. Well done 💜

Becky Lorion

I truly appreciate the fact, that your lyrics are always about something that matters - not the pile of random and boring words… Plus your melodies and delivery are always on point and PERFECT 🖤

Franceska

Ooh. This one tickled my heart. This song definitely honored the story. Well done.

TheNeediestOne

It's beautiful 😢

Genevieve

Love the acoustic version of this song!! Such emotional lyrics😥 Hope you have a great week!!

Bookdragon 43

Seeing parents getting older is so relatable.. no note on the demo from me really, just curious of how you would put together a video around this song :)

Bua (mintteafortwo)

I took time to read the reddit post, comments and lyrics before listening. Just through reading warms my heart. Listening to your voice and the song made me even more warm and fuzzy. It's been a while since I heard any guitar acoustic song from you. I could feel your earnest feelings through your own reflections and how you're trying to be contented with life. I really like this gentle melody. Just waiting for the polished version to add to my loop playlist! Thanks for this beautiful song~~💜

Why are you doing this to me, Joel? (smearing my snots over my face)

N M

Hope that you someday remember that work isn’t everything in life. There’s so many good things people miss in life because of work ❤️

Marlene Sommer ☀️

I like the melody, I started to sway as I got to the first chorus.

Kinga Konyecsik

I can relate too hard with the lyrics, so here I am with some crap in my eyes 🥹🥲 I liked the way u can hear the guitar and the emotional vocals were beautiful 🎶🥰 Thanks for this one, can't wait to hear the finished version of it 🙂❤️

JustSomeJK

I hate that sometimes you need to see someone else in a bad place to realize how good you have it.

Lianne Conroy

First impression: Lovely lyrics that can be interpreted a number of ways. A cosy emotional feel. Nice to hear a song from you that isn't about heartbreak.

Cas

Ooof. That got me all emotional, Joel. It's beautifully written. 🥹🥰

Trisa

I just love it. 😍 You're so creative. I liked seeing you composing about someone else’s life. Thank you for sharing this with us. There is nothing more beautiful than overcoming our traumas. Have a great week :)

Jess Haggstron

That's hit a nerve with me - I've got to my 40s and life isn't what I expected or wanted but at least I have a place to call home, food to eat and family to love. It's very much about valuing what you have not what you could have. You could switch the verses around and have the bit about being younger first then transition into as your older then the realization that none of it really mattered because you always have a place to call home.

Clair (Teampanda)

Ahh this is beautiful! May have gotten a little teary-eyed.
