"Songs That Will Get You In Trouble"! I was hoping you guys would help me with just looking over the video and telling me if anything feels too far in terms of the music we cover - it's quite shocking by default of course., but I just want the people who watch to not feel weird or (too) uncomfortable.

None of this stuff was too edgy at all imo.

RhodiumMaiden

Good choice, I agree

Shiny

I don’t like stupid girls by Pink. I know it’s about the Paris hiltons of the world but the way it comes off when I see it is that it’s woman-shaming. It shows scenes of plastic surgery and bulimia. Everyone arounds me knows not to play it. I find it very triggering. Maybe instead of attacking other women, attack the misogyny that exists in our culture. Don’t add to it, Pink.

I think if you take out the Aaliyah/R. Kelly and “Kim” parts the video will be fine as an entertainment piece. Those two topics have it teetering between entertainment piece and social commentary/discussion piece. That’s where the awkwardness is coming from. The audience doesn’t know if you’re trying to entertain them or trying to get them think deeper. There isn’t anything wrong with either one but I don’t believe they can coexist in the same video. But that my humble opinion.

Wrappedup43

I like the fact that u sometimes choose more edgy topics that makes people think and have conversations. You handled the topics well and with the warning in the beginning u should be fine. I had not heard most of those songs or at least the edgier original versions. Kim was the one that made me feel the most uncomfortable. It was kinda interesting to compare Kim and Goodbye Earl with similar topic, but with different abroach... Anyways I didn't get upset about the video. Have a great weekend 😊

JustSomeJK

Thanks for your thoughts! We actually cut out that Nirvana song, it felt too upsetting to me

Joel Berghult

Please censor the "let's get r****ded" audio.

Yulia

Kissing cousins is crazy 💀 Some people still aply it tho ._.

Elena

I don’t.

Bethany Bruner

I have epilepsy too, i had never noticed that line, thanks

Snoodle

Maybe I'm just desensitized in general but I did not get offended at all by the video. The undividual songs could be, especially the ones with a dark backstory. But they exist and it's interesting to see what the artist thought was okay thanks do vs what we now think is ok to put in a song.

Genevieve

This is great, you should do more like this. Only annoying thing for me is including Pumped up Kicksbif you're not going to explain it. You are starting to sound more American (not good or bad just an observation). I would watch another one of these x

Snoodle

Yeah, that's true enough. Some of the other songs made me feel a bit weird (especially the facts about certain songs), but the warning at the beginning was definitely a good idea.

Amanda 🖤

The topic is edgy, but I like it, it's something new. There are lots of controversial rock and metal song, like Rape Me by Nirvana or I Used To Love Her by Guns N Roses and many, maaaany more, so if you're gonna make part two in the future, you can check out another genres too. There is also a genre called horrorcore which I'm not much familiar with, but I've heard some songs and they are really disturbing. Of course it's uncomfortable, but it's part of our life, it's not colorful and sweet and some music can open our eyes on what is going on with the whole world around us.

Natalia Bialo

Growing up in Asia, I didn't know the majority of the songs on this list (at least in terms of how controversial/unsettling they are). Ngl I got uncomfortable watching as the video progresses, but not to the point where it's unbearable.. enjoyed your other content more, but that's just me

Bua (mintteafortwo)

Video title and viewer discretion has been indicated/explained so viewers are encouraged to make informed choice whether to proceed. Honestly, I don't feel offended from start to end. Hmm.. how do I feel about the songs.. Generally I'm an inquisitive person because I went on to search those that I never knew of, to listen again carefully and read the lyrics to understand, especially social context, better. So that took me a while before I start to feel yucky. On another note, I felt I'm becoming immune to rude or shocking topics/statements. Maybe because I felt at some point, artistes have this rebellious urge to push boundaries and be damning I guess? Maybe because controversial songs are not something new to me? I see nothing wrong to explore and discuss about controversial songs because I trust you can handle scary subjects tactfully instead of sugar-coating. I hope viewers don't misconstrued what this vid is supposed to be an open discussion as opposed to being tone-deaf. Is this why you feel unsure? Video is okay to me. I hope you don't stop asking unconventional planning requests to your research team. May you have a great weekend, Joel~~💜

There’s definitely some questionable content and lyrics that vary between iffy to awful. I wouldn’t choose to listen to them generally but it was interesting. The thing that I find interesting is how the generation that spawned some of these songs and listened to them makes negative comments about the next generation.🤷🏻‍♀️

Shiny

If you really want to hear unacceptable songs of a sexual nature, try listening to some jazz/blues from the 30s. There are some 78s out there by Lucille Bogan that definitely have an adult rating. It is interesting that jazz had such a raunchy rep at one stage, which I didn't understand. I do now!!

Kate Quantrell

I liked the video 😊 I don’t get offended by much and ive heard alot of these songs in the past without much of a second thought. Maybe a younger audience would think differently as there’s so many things we don’t say these days from even 10 years ago.

Missy

The few of these that I have heard of were from my childhood and I didn't think they were that bad. It may just be the life we lived at that point though. We dealt with a lot that other generations didn't.

Lianne Conroy

I can get quite sensitive to controversial topics in music but this was watchable 😊 However, I will be avoiding putting it on in the background when Mini Chaos is around for obvious reasons! 😅

Jen 🦙

Art imitates life, which is sometimes shameful, corrupt, heavy, taboo, and violent. I think it’s refreshing that you finally touched a bit on this dark/edgy side of music head-on. You should be good with the ‘viewer discretion is advised’ disclaimer at the beginning.

My thoughts while watching: Didn’t listen to the lyrics much back then. I can see how some of these might be painful for people who had traumatic experience. We, people, are way more stupid than we think we are. Thin ice topics, hope Joel won’t get in trouble😅

I enjoyed the video. Meaning that you did a good job with covering harsh song subjects and didn’t glorify them. I appreciate your warning in the beginning and your honesty throughout. I’m not sure if I still have it, but I also bought the Eminem album with “Kim” on it. That’s not the only disturbing song on that album though. Most of these songs I’ve never heard before. So, in that aspect, I liked learning about more music from you. Like (probably) several others in the comments, I grew up in the ‘80’s and I’m sure I’ve heard many of these topics on the radio (whether I remember it or not). And yes, back then, much of it was accepted. The kids growing up in this time would probably feel a sense of culture shock with what was acceptable back then…I’m sure much like, if our younger selves time traveled forward to now. I’m sure that at some point, this type of video had to be made, by someone. I’m glad that you are the one who made it. Because of your honesty, the fact that you don’t make light of these situations, and you’re actually appalled and uncomfortable with them. Thank you for your warning in the beginning, and for your honesty throughout the whole video…not just here, but in all of your videos.

Melissa Rogers

The warning right off the top is key so people can decide if they want to stick around or not. This video will definitely be an acquired taste but you definitely made that clear. I didn’t really mind it but it is kind of wild listening to some of these songs in one place! I think you covered it well though, didn’t make light of it.

Becky Lorion

I hate the normal version of Let's Get It Started, cuz there's a line in the song that says "bop your head like epilepsy" and I suffer from epilepsy. So everytime I hear that line I get angry. Having epilepsy sucks 😞😞😞

Kayla Jones

I think that the warning you have at the beginning is a good idea. I am kind of surprised that some of these songs made it on to albums.

Bookdragon 43

As long as you put out trigger warnings like for DV, Abuse etc then people have the opportunity to scroll past. Most people will be curious as to how far is too far, just remember your demographic is quite wide!! Us "old uns" who grew up with some pretty disturbing but at the time completely acceptable behaviours. We accept that the past is the past you can't erase history, but you can do better from it. The younger demographic have been sheltered from a lot of this and probably will be shocked and maybe a little upset but you have the opportunity to educate them, that this is how it was and we've learnt from it!! I think its an interesting topic and there's no need to shy away from it.

Clair (Teampanda)

Yea Kim is the one that gets to me the most lol

Joel Berghult

I'll watch on my lunch tonight and leave my thoughts

Lianne Conroy

Looking forward to the next video. I'm just not the audience for this one.

Cas

Sorry you didn’t like it! There were a number that were troubling in minor ways imo, and only a few rough ones - but that’s what the video offers in title/thumb. Sorry it wasn’t right for you!! Got many silly ones coming up

Joel Berghult

Most of it was fine. Nothing new about writing songs trying to be edgy. The R Kelly stuff is sorta gross. But it’s really hard to listen to Kim. Appreciate you not making light of it. Not sure how much it fits in with overall mood of the video, but glad it ended on a funny note with Goodbye Earl.

Dorie

I don’t find that one that bad, feels like a parody. You’re good :)

Joel Berghult

I still think of Goodbye Earl as a parody but the theme is not for eveyone .r

Cas

Total honesty here, this video made me a bit nauseous. Although there was a warning and I am an adult, watching one disturbing song after the other got to me. And your nervous laughter and attempts to lighten the mood didn't help. I had expected a few fun songs in there that were troubling in a minor or funny way but that didn't really happen much. I think this is off brand for you. Your uncomfortableness while filming and your need to ask us what we think says volumes. Sorry to be so negative. Maybe I'm just too old.

Cas

I grew up in the 80s and a lot of lyrics and movie characters were totally offensive by today’s standards and yet there we were, going to the films and buying the records. We know better now, so we can do better now. If there’s any purpose to these, they should serve as a reminder of what we could, and shouldn’t, be. I think it’s ok to talk about this stuff, it’s not easy. You did the brave but correct thing.

Bethany Bruner

I'm still kind of surprised a lot of these songs made it onto albums. Imagine when that Dixie Chicks came out and an 11 year old girl (me) was singing it loud and proud and not really knowing the context behind it. Wild...

Amanda 🖤

I think it’s fine cause you don’t defend any of the songs. It would be trickier if you guys were like “Actually this one’s funny” I think if you wanted to be extra cautious in your content warning at the beginning you could add ‘including domestic violence’ because that’s a big one for a lot of people Also I am personally triggered by the shame of having bought that Bloodhound Gang album at HMV in the 90s

emy

Just started it but I think the warning is good. If anyone stays and feels uncomfortable or offended…kinda on them

Alle Engdahl

Can't wait to watch this!
