Some Thoughts

Hey guys,

Wanted to give you an update in text, it's been a while and I think differently writing things out like this.

I've been enjoying posting more and being back at it recently. I think doing the reaction videos is a great reminder for me that this is a job - I do enjoy doing them, but there is a bit of resistance getting them done for sure. I watch them back and think they're good - I think I'm more insightful now than I was a year ago.

At the same time, as many of you know, I'm thinking about what to do creatively, and how to do it. I still don't know whether to put more creative videos on the main channel, or another channel. While it might make sense to put it on another channel, I don't know if I have the capacity to run 2 channels - one channel is a lot of work already (in addition to the very casual Roomie Talks).

Anyway, it's something I think a lot about. I'm working on this 3 microphone setup, and I already have the dueling pianos setup downstairs. I think my main interest is talking about things in a funny way, messing around, but in the end having a great song that might hit a bit more emotionally than you might. be expecting. One of my main inspirations for everything I do is the (old) TV series Scrubs. For those of you who don't know, it's a funny TV show about young doctors, and most of the time it's just kinda silly/funny, but then it hits you with these really emotional moments. That's a space I would really like to be in, in my own way. We have fun in the videos, play around, but then there's something of more tangible value at the end of it. This might be something I do with friends, or alone. I don't know yet. Probably both. But I just want to get started and actually do it, while keeping the regular videos going to keep in touch with you all, paying the bills, yada yada.

There is the problem of the audiences potentially being a bit different. Does it make sense for a channel to talk about celebrity music stuff and also making my own? Maybe not. But I do think there's a sizeable chunk of you who do care (this patreon is proof of it!) - I just haven't shown my creative side that much in a long time. Additionally, creative videos could monetize better too, and I'd love to be able to hire people to film my videos better, make music videos, get the songs properly mixed & produced, etc. Moving all that to another channel brings it into question: is being more creative even valuable?

I have very few examples of people making truly creative content on YouTube successfully right now. It just usually doesn't lend itself to making long, talky videos like what the meta is right now. The other end is just, spectacle, which is cool, but not what I'm interested in. I don't mind comedy,  or novelty content, like - three mics stuff is mainly just a novelty idea, but I do find it inspiring and interesting.

Anyway, maybe I'm just blurting out words right now. I know all of you have lives that likely have very different priorities, and things that matter to you. I would love to hear about it in the comments. I'm just trying to share where I'm at, what I'm thinking about.

I appreciate you all a LOT, and this little patreon community is one of the main reasons I've been a lot more inspired recently. The amount of positive energy I get from you is unreal. So thank you, thank you, thank you. The best is yet to come, for Roomie content, and for you.

No matter where we are in life, whether you need to wait out/get through a bad part or if you're living a great situation right now - let's try to make things even better and look forward to a brighter future, no matter what that means :)

I probably got pretentious there. Anyway, thank you, once again. This place means a lot to me.

I will support any decision you make because you always make your videos entertaining. I really enjoy when you sing and show us the musical aspect of the song. Very interesting to us folks that are not musically trained. Love you and your content.

Regardless how life is treating a great majority of us, there will still be a few to casually give you a skratta and a pick me up of inspiration. Scrubs idea sounds pretty neat, if you can get Dave Franco from hiding that be an epico vid * Kekw * Regardless what you have in mind, may your future/upcoming projects continue to go well. May things slowly get better for the rest of us Mate 🐺 🐾

PhantomFidget

I support you however you go but I think putting it all on one channel is easiest and best to capture your audience. We’re all here for it! Also Scrubs is the best inspo - it’s the only show that is any way close to portraying medicine and perfect in the way that it’s not absolutely crazy off the wall wild and insanely heartfelt and tender at the same time. Perfect!

Katherine P

I'll have to go find it :)

SpyroShurtagul

I checked and Roomie unlisted the one on his channel , but Jazza still has the one they made for his channel. They reacted to Jazza’s music in that one

Adina

Well dang! I thought I'd seen every Roomie video! But honestly... It's been so long and I just recently found JAZZA. I honestly probably just forgot about that hahaha! I'll have to go rewatch it 😄

SpyroShurtagul

He knows Jazza, they have video together from years ago, you should check it out, it’s pretty funny 😁 . And I agree that he seems to have found a way to have his videos favoured by the algorithm.

Adina

Oh man... I definitely understand what you're going through. I see a lot of YouTube channels talking about the craziness of the algorithm right now... But it's creators like you that make the platform special. In regards to channels that do crazy, creative stuff and make a living from it, you should check out Jazza! He's an artist that does some crazy stuff and he seems to be really prospering! Definitely someone to look into. Also I definitely understand what you mean about Scrubs. I friggin love that show ^_^ And I think you are on the right track for it! Keep your chin up. We're all here for you. :)

SpyroShurtagul

My dude, been watching you for years. Just started Patreon now that I have the finances to help support. All I'm going to say is this. Bruh, DO BOTH on your single channel. Naomi Jon does it. Don't try to do it the 'right way', do it your way. You have a following that will support you. And having it all in one place keeps you in balance and control of your own work. Keeps the stress down. The people that are not into the music side of your brand can always skip them. I personally would love to see more of your personal creativity. Good luck! Can't wait to see where you go from here.

Gabrielle H-ing

I discovered your channel during one of my personal darkest times in early 2021 and guess what, your videos were the first ones that made me laugh for real in a long time. Combined with one of my favorite topics -music- I kept watching and I joined your Meet & Greets as a listener back then and you have always been a very open and honest person about what happend to you or what you were going through. Even though it might sound strange but it helped me going through my things back then as I realized I am not alone with my struggles. So I can totally understand what is going through your mind when you try to find out the right way. But there is no right or wrong, most important is, that you feel happy doing this! Your laugh is contagious and I personally would love to see some of the silly stuff again (you laugh you loose). But as you helped me so much back then, I like to support your content whatever way you decide to go. I love seeing your creative process and I like your inspiration from Scrubs. I am sure you will be able to hit this emotional spot with your creative ideas, you already did more often than you think. Exited to see what you will create in the future.

Lebuwi

Most of these comments have said what I was going to say already but, I just wanted to add that I truly enjoy your creative side coming out in video form. And I think those type of videos should go on whichever channel that you think will help you gain the most of out them financially so that you can do more things that you want and deserve to be able to do. You're incredibly talented and I wish the world could see more of that. Best of luck to you in your endeavors, Joel, and thank you so much for everything that do and share with us. 💕

Leah Miranda

Hi again, Joel. I couldn't shake off these thoughts on my mind. I don't know if anything I'm about to say will be of any use or good for you. I don't mean to question your decisions and I don't wish to make you feel your next course of actions is wrong. I have no right to tell you what you should do or think. You've been going back and forth about having 2nd channel for creative endeavours - songwriting and music-based experiments. You did some in the past within the same RoomieOfficial channel. Are the YT algorithms and viewership patterns so drastically different now that you must have a separate, 2nd channel to showcase your creativity? If you're able to cope with the demands of building a 2nd channel from scratch, then it's okay to do so without seeing you get burnt out or have your mental health affected. I don't think it's weird to have creativity being showcased on main channel. It's a music-based channel, yes? Will putting up a poll to ask viewers if they prefer a 2nd channel, solely for creative projects, can help you make a decision? If response is gearing for 2nd channel, then it's alright to go ahead with your plans and just have fun experiment away. Solely using main channel - another perspective could be - for every few weeks of commentary vids, there's a creative vid. So there is a regular consistency of what most viewers are used to watching and what you want to experiment. Allow viewers to slowly understand there's an evolving stage of RoomieOfficial. And you don't feel so hollow trying to hustle for livelihood. Also.. algorithms keep changing all the time. But originality and creativity will stand the test of time. To be honest, your RoomieOfficial channel is unique and I'm hardpressed to find exact carbon copy channels for comparison. Maybe I didn't search hard enough? And probably the reason you found very few benchmark channels to gauge possible success for your own channel. Creativity can be in many forms, even a hack on how to peel the shells off hard boiled eggs fast and effectively, is valuable. Why do you think creativity is not valuable? I feel sad you think that way. Before I end, please forgive me if this post is garbage. Just ignore please!

Thanks for sharing ur thoughts with us 🙂 I have really enjoyed this new more frequent posting schedule. And I agree that ur reaction videos are more insightful nowadays. And if u feel the resistance getting them done, it definitely doesn't look like it on the video. When I got hooked on ur videos, one of the reasons was that u had such variety in the content. Under the title of music there could be anything related, u singing, reacting to music, competitions, experiments.. and all that was companied by ur genuine personality and sense of humor. So I'm loving ur idea of talking about things in a funny way/messing around and then ending up creating a great song that hits emotionally! To me it makes sense that u also have ur own music on the channel, 'cos that's what u have done before too. Also u have the voice and the talent for it, so... I personally am looking forward to the more creative content, so in my eyes it's valuable! It might inspire other people too. YT algorithm is tricky and it might take some time to get some people used to other than reaction videos. But why not give it a try, if it's something that makes u happy 🙂 Thank u for creating this cozy little community. It's really nice to hear that u get something out of it too 🙂 I appreciate u and ur work/creativity a lot, so thank u for being u and doing what u do ❤️ Can't wait to see what's ahead! 🙂

Hej Natalia, greetings from Warsaw 😁

I think what the majority of others have written in the comments already said it best. 5 stars. No notes. (Insert Lil Jon, “Yeah” sound effect here) I do however have a little bit of a rant regarding that “I probably got pretentious there” closing statement of yours though. [sigh] 🤦🏽‍♀️ Okay. Dude. You’re the exact opposite of pretentious: you’re honest, sincere, and humble. Pretentious is when someone (or something, like a work of art, for example) attempts to impress others with unjustified superiority. It’s a deceitful show of having greater importance, intellect, culture, value, etc. than is actually possessed. It’s when someone knows they are no better than anybody else, yet they act like they are anyway in order to feel superior. It means “to pretend”. And that’s just not you! Talking about your truth, your experiences, or something you are indeed knowledgeable and very passionate about does not make you pretentious. Being vulnerable and expressing your thoughts and feelings and asking for feedback does not make you pretentious. In the parasocial relationship internet world, you are the last person I would use that word to describe! Okay, rant over. I just really had to get that off my chest. Words have meaning and they matter, damnit! You’re not pretentious, mmkay? So please don’t put yourself down by calling yourself that.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. I feel that what makes you happy and fulfilled is what you should do. Posting different types of videos would work on your main channel. Appreciate your creativity and have a great weekend!!👍🎶

Bookdragon 43

I appreciate your creative content but also enjoy your commentary videos, especially when you smile and seem to be happy. So I wish for both and I hope you will find the balanse of doing what you really want and what you do in order to make a living. I think its best if you continue with the mixed content on your main channel. Some will prefere the commentary but its is a good chance that people get to know and like your creative content as well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Best wishes 🎶🎶

Elli

Joel, thank you for sharing your doubts - you mean to us so frickin much! Do what you feel is right, creative, funny - we appreciate it and we love it. Don't think about "potencially audience" - you needn't fit to every single one YT viewer, you need't please them. Just be you, don't ovethink and "Just do it!" 😁 I suppose 99% of your viewers love this wonderfull versatilily of your content - commentary, but also singing / songwriting videos. Last but not least: don't forget, that you are the king of MUSIC EXPERIMENTS and "stupid song ideas"!!! Overall versatility is a great value of your channel and your brand - IMHO you shouldn't split the channel into two parts. Seems like waste of your time, plus many unnecessary work and efforts. Did you see Rick Beato's wideo "Why So Many YouTubers Are Quitting"? He seems to answering there on many of your questions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9PboTYmuQQ So don’t worry, keep beeing marvellous and creative - we’re with you always 💙

Franceska

I like this idea a lot

Adina

Yea think it’s private now but it was..somethin lol

Shauna

I was thinking about something the other day. What if you merge creative videos and creative ones? Obviously you can't do both in one video because you'll get demoneytized... But for example your video of the worst songs that are still popular could have a follow up video where you make a song taking the best or worst parts of these songs to create something new. For example if the baseline of one of the songs inspire you and part of the melody of an other one. I don't know if that makes any sense lol, but it could engage the audience since it's related to the commentary video, but still leave you space to be creative

Genevieve

Thank you for sharing what's on your mind with us. I would love to see the creative content on your main channel, since in the end, it is your main interest. I get that from a business perspective, it might be difficult, but like others have said, I do think you could get it to work by mixing it in with the commentary videos. Anyway, I have no doubt that the best is yet to come and I am looking forward to seeing what you have in store. You have talent and passion, you've got this!

GaelleRx

Making music on his girlfriend? I missed that one 🤣

Snoodle

The main thing out of all of this Joel is that you are happy, Happy Joel enjoys making content, he's enthused about new projects and that shows in the clips and notes you write here. I think a lot of your content has stood the test of time, creatively things like the iPhone song, making music underwater, the making music on your girlfriend etc.. all still work well today and to go back and revisit what you enjoyed about those videos might help you see that creatively you are evolving! Keep the PMA up and keep writing to us, it's cathartic for you and entertaining to us, a bit like a sneak peek in someone's diary! Xx

Clair (Teampanda)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I think what you’re going through is what a lot of us deal with. How do we work a job that pays the bills but doesn’t suck the life out of us, while still having the energy to fuel our creative soul. I’d think about a second channel differently. Is it cost effective? Maybe not. Is it valuable? Absolutely. Everything you put out creatively is valuable to someone. I’m glad you’re enjoying the commentary videos more. It’s fun watching your reactions. Not sure which I love more. Watching you vibe to the stuff you like, or your expressions to the stuff you don’t. Also love your perspectives on different music and how people hear things differently. I always find new music, so thanks for that. Anyway, hope you find a good balance. And know we appreciate you as much as you appreciate us.

Trying to figure out what to do, what to focus on and how to combine different ideas is def very challenging. I myself find it really hard, cause there's too many things I'd like to do, too many skills i gotta learn to do them well, and overall I feel pretty lost and overwhelmed. And unfortunately that's also tided up to money - to get better paid job I need to have better skills, for that I need to practice more and that takes more time. And then you realise that you keep focusing on the plan B, instead of trying to go for plan A that you used to be excited about. I'm seriously amazed by ppl who have full time jobs and yet they manage to create so many awesome things. When I get back from work, my brain just doesn't want to do anything anymore xD But ik that there's even more ppl in similar situation (surely even here). That said - being creative and trying to make it one's job is quite the challenge. But I'm all for seeing what u come up with and share with us! Thanks for brightening our days, Joel! <3

Okay, I'm kinda new here and maybe I live on the other side of the world but I'm gonna say what I think anyway. When I found Your channel (which was about two, maybe three years ago, accidentally) I was really focused on one goal in my life and I was in a really dark place because I couldn't reach it due to a bunch of reasons. I started waching stuff that was not really close to my interests back then (I was only into rock and metal music). There was nothing to lose, I just took other perspective. At first, I was a picky watcher, but then I found out that I'm learning a lot. And the main thing I learned was to have open eyes, ears and mind for boarden your horizons. I found new way to do what really matters in my life. It takes time but, whatever. I'm happy being where I am now. I know how it is when you cannot unleash the music that is inside of you, I'm a musician too and I live in a place where you have to do what everyone does if you want to succeed as a music maker. But I think the music that is inside you, the REAL music is more valuable, interesing and fun. Have Your mind open. Good things come unexpected. And we're here as a proof that the stuff you make is valuable. Greetings from Poland, btw. <3

Natalia Bialo

Awh Joel! That was great to read 🥲 I think you shouldn’t over think & over analyse everything. Have fun & post what you want to. Be real, be authentic because I really think people love that about others. Just be Joel, life’s too short to care about what others may think of the videos, because at the end of the day we just wanna see YOU. You’re entertaining enough on your own in my opinion, Because you’re silly you’re awkward, you ramble on & fuck up your words & go off on one but that’s what makes you human. If too much channels is hard to run honestly just put them on the main one 😊 the main one is where it’s at anyway, it’s a collective of everything. I’m glad you’re back and posting on a regular basis now. The videos are excellent, I’m enjoying watching them as I usually do. :) Don’t stress too much honestly you’re doing great. Sending you good vibes xx

Elle Quinn

Thanks for sharing. I like the idea of more creative videos from time to time, i think we all wait for it too 😄but post them on your main channel, don't run a new one. We did not sign up "only" for react video 😉 Just my opinion of course, but I like it when you do different type of content. It was fun to watch the videao where Jack, Daniel and you where composing a song and eating chili for example, or back in the days, the contests with your members to write a song with a specific sound in it... And most important, be happy of what you do 😊

Emmanuelle

Yeah he seems a bit bored sometimes, like he doesn't want to be doing the commentary. I think it would be interesting to see how long it would take to build a new community almost from scratch. People mostly interested in New, creative, original music. Meet some new friends.

Lianne Conroy

I am retiring in 6 months time. How is that relevant you ask? Because I am entering the final phase of my life. In my head I am 18. IRL I am nearly 60. From my experience, it is best not to over think. Give yourself a break and ask yourself, if you had no commitments, where would you like to live? What would you like to do every day when you wake up? Who would you like to be with? What things/people/places cause anxiety and need to be ditched? What activities swallow your time and energies and divert you from going outside and seeing the sky? If you are confident that you are asking yourself the correct questions, that's great. Are you sure that which YT channel you post on is really the question? From the outside looking in, I see an ultra-talented singer-songwriter who has a fabulous personality, charisma and , incidentally, look great too. Let your creativity fly. My creative daughter lives on a narrowboat on a canal and is living her best life. Sure, speaking 6 languages was a solid career choice for a translator. It wasn't a good life choice. Focus on what makes you happy. I am now off to dye my hair blue, pink and green, because why not?

Kate Quantrell

Thank you Joel for sharing your thoughts and for the kind words. My "area" is visual communication (mostly graphic design), where the rules stay the same, but there's a lot of techniques, trends, and sometimes programs/apps that'll come and go fast (especially now with AI). I don't mind it, maybe even find it interesting about it, but even the smallest mistake can have serious consequences. Which is also why music is so relaxing for me.. or anything I know nothing or little about (but the music is most enjoyable), and am allowed to be "stupid"/feel safe making mistakes. It's pure fun to catch up, get lost, and catch up again with explanations or lyrics.. to just explore and not be too serious about it. Your channel has a combination of being funny, emotional (music), which is already powerful (as you described with that TV show Scrubs, I haven't seen it). But also creative, interesting, and with a great personality, there's a lot to focus on in a fun way, and you immediately forget to worry about anything. So thank you for that and for letting us be part of your creative journey, appreciate you a lot. I've no idea what the best way with channels is (I've seen some with mixed content, where the audience seemed to choose what they like, but don't know.. it's interesting to hear how it actually works.

Nina L

I don't know if this would help you or not, but I want to share how I've come across your channel 🙂 I discovered your channel somewhere around December 2022. I always watched YouTube on TV and remembered putting on a video from my favorite Thai channel. When that video ended, YT autoplayed one of your commentary videos. I was about to get up and grab the remote to change it, but I was preparing Xmas presents for my friends at the time so there's a lot of wrapping papers and sticky tapes lying around. I was too lazy to get up, so I let the video autoplay. "Let's hear what this guy has to say" because I like music in general after all. After that one autoplayed video, l got more recommended videos from your channel. There was a time when literally all of my recommended videos were from your channels: the main channel, Roomie Clips (now Roomie Talks), and Roomie Responds. "I guess I couldn't escape him now 😅" I continued watching your videos and then I got to hear you sing.. 🥺 Hearing your singing "As It Was" with Gabe that's when I decided I would subscribe to your channels, turn on notifications and everything. I was hooked eventually. 2023 rolled around and one of the first notifications I got from your channel was "Why I'll be leaving for a while" I remember thinking that's okay. Take all the time you need. I have like 10-12 years of content to catch up with anyway. You didn't upload much in 2023, still here we are. I guess what I'm trying to say is it took like 10, 12 years for your content to find me. This potential viewer/fan who lives halfway across the world. (Not saying that your creative videos would take that long to reach its audience 😅) So, for lack of a better word, trust the process. And most importantly, trust your work. Your perseverance. Introducing new content may drive some viewers away, but I'm sure it will bring in some new ones as well. So please do what you're passionate about. As long as you enjoy the ride, you're taking your audience with you on that journey 🙂 I'm sorry this turns out to be one long asss comment. If you're reading this, I appreciate you so much. Thank you for sharing what's on your mind with us ❤️

Bua (mintteafortwo)

I don't have a creative bone in my body but i think we all feel a bit like this sometimes and itbis hardvto envision what is next with no clear reference point. I would love to see creative stuff on your main channel, but i get from a business point it might not make sense. Are you still going to finish the song people voted for? Things have a funny way of working out anyway x

Snoodle

I know you lately don’t see the value in things like covers, or using a well known song to experiment with it (I wrote senorita w/o hearing it style, I made x song better, etc.) but I do wonder how that type of video would do now because they were so entertaining, showed your talent and I hope not all revenue from those was claimed.

Adina

I am so happy that you are posting regularly now, and that you see it as a job, because it is a job. Now you have the option to make music as a hobby in your spare time (outside of the main channel) or make it part of the job. I’d say on the RO channel not everything has to be the same, you just have to have eyeballs on the channel and the more creative videos will get decent enough views as well. I would point out at least a couple of gaming channels (of your friends) that have music as their most viewed video, but I think that youtube has changed since those got popular. I started watching you when you were doing a mix of stuff and found it all enjoyable so I am heavily biased here 😁

Adina

Unrelated, but Chao cheese is a pretty good vegan cheese! I remember asking years ago (2018/2019 I think) about three wishes you had, and I remember a good vegan cheese was one of them. Also I'd be interested in watchi g you cook more too. Like actual swedish meatballs or just hearing stories about you and your dad or whatever. What got you into writing music? What songs of your's mean the most to you? Maybe an AMAA video where people in your Patreon ask you almost anything. I really liked the roomie ask thing on the discord, and don't know if you still do those. Another idea could be the history of different genres of music, or even weird (or dark) facts about songs/instruments. Or music theory videos. Just whatever piqués your interest is more what I want to see. I want what is interesting to you, what you like.

Noodle.io

No one does.

Lianne Conroy

Thanks for your answer! I still don't quite understand the algorithm either.

Sugary Magnolia

The main channel has a lot of casual viewers only there for commentary videos. But they get a decent number of views so the algorithm will recommend them to other casual viewers. If he uploads songwriting videos and they don't get as many views the algorithm will not recommend any of his videos as often and the whole channel may get less views. If more creative stuff has its own channel then it won't affect the main channel. But people that watch other similar music content will be recommended the new channel. Yt algorithm is very finicky.

Lianne Conroy

Awww thank you!

Miriam

Let your creativity flow Joel, that’s when your content is its most genuine. The commentary can come across as stiff sometimes and it’s obvious you want to experiment so go for it because you’re here for a good time not a long time! If you’re worried about it affecting views and dividing the audience on the main channel, upload the videos to both there and the Roomie Writes Songs channels so if, in a year or two, you feel like they don’t fit the format of the Roomie channel they’re still there for those of us who really enjoy your naturally creative side 😊 You’ve got this, follow your happiness Joel!

Setting aside personal desires and hopes for you, for that would be selfish. What I hear is mixed from you and kind of confusing. You have written down and mulled over and conveyed, to an extent, your current visions. They are doable despite the over thinking negative talk that you think is being realistic. I used to watch that show, still love it. In some ways you have echoed that theme in the past. Bringing it back sounds good. Why do I say all that you want accomplish is doable? You don't have to work harder, Joel. Breaking these big visions into bite size insta photos is the only hard part. How? Well, that requires you to stop the negative thinking. Put that nasty stuff in a room, lock the door, and throw that key into the ocean. Think on one vision. Go to a quiet place in your home. Get yourself to just stop. Don't think on anything but the vision. Relax, breathe, concentrate on just breathing. Let yourself just be for however long it takes to just relax. I know that's hard for you. Stop thinking everything has to be now. You have the capacity to make these wonderful aspirations become reality. You are incredibly creative and talented. In the past you would challenge yourself to do in the moment something that requires no limits. All the latest, even the ones you have shelved, has been really beautiful. Showing that when you allow yourself to just flow and not force you have a beautiful talent. The desire you have to share is wonderful. The past way of allowing others to be a friend while you have explained....priceless. Being in joy of what you are doing, the money will follow. We all desire to share in others joy. It gives us joy to see someone who shares as you do. Joel, please I hope you hear and understand what I've said. I don't care if anyone agrees. I want you to be happy. For that brings me happiness and joy ✌️✌️✌️❤️❤️❤️😂😂😂

Gayle

Big virtual hugs to you, Joel! I just want to thank you for being real and confiding in us. I share the same sentiments with everyone here. I honestly don't know what other advice to share because all the points said here are so true, kind, perceptive and encouraging. I find myself nodding in agreement with everyone's opinions and advices. Hmm.. If it's any comfort to you, I'll say that you're a rare gem amongst most content creators I know. Please stay the way you are. Create your own success story at your own pace and interests. I'll always appreciate your earnest effort, your hard work and your neverending brainwave to come up with something fun, creative and even educational for us and other viewers at large. If you feel lost again, we're here to be your listening ear and give support to you as always. AS ALWAYS ANYTIME, Joel! I hope you'll have a fun weekend. Till then, please take care~~💜

Don’t be afraid to experiment with your creativity. You never know when you’ll stumble upon an idea that works and strikes a chord with people and has the potential to bring a new audience in as well. If you’re enjoying it and it feels good, do it! Someone had mentioned sprinkling in more creative/original music in between the commentary ones and I agree. I think putting it on the main channel is fine. No need to stress about adding another one. We appreciate you!

Well said!

I'm not much of a YouTube person aside from a few favorites, so I'm not super familiar with how it works. What would be the benefit of putting new content on a different channel?

Sugary Magnolia

Hey Joel! Try not to stress too much about it, I am sure everything will work out! Nothing has to be perfect, just do what feels good and fun and if you have to make changes that’s ok. Just know that your videos make myself and other people happy!! We appreciate and support whatever you decide to do! 💜🙂

I love the creativity on your channel the most, tbh! I think it's more than valuable. I also don't see any issue with keeping it on the main channel. Viewers might watch them more over time. Just know we're all here for you! You have both great insights and musical creativity. You've got this!

Courtney Walker

Exactly!! @Roomie leave them up, let them “fester”…in time, they too will gain traction and views. Don’t be so quick to take them down.

Joel, in the paragraph where you question “Does it make sense to comment on other people’s music, and then make my own?”, and “Is being more creative even valuable?” ( I paraphrased a little.)…YES JOEL!!! It is valuable!! I know that I haven’t been here as long as some, but in the time I have been here, I’ve watched your entire channel (of what you hadn’t already taken down), at least three times already…3x!! Plus your 2nd channel, and anything else I can find with you on other people’s channels, what I can find on Google. The reason I brought up that one paragraph is, at the beginning of the RoomieOfficial channel, you were doing a whole bunch of different things: making covers (with your friends, and on your own), doing loop covers, making silly experimental videos, vlogs, doing voice impressions, AND making your own music!! You’ve told us many times, in your videos; how much you love music, how passionate you are about music, making it, etc. And, in my opinion, it shows. Through your posts here, we see how much work and passion you put into everything you create, and how hard you are on yourself (at times). So yes, being creative is very valuable. Joel, please don’t doubt yourself. Instead, lean into your creative ideas and make the content that makes you happy…we’ll all be here for the ride, helping you in anyway we possibly can!! Your creativity and passion and all of your content matters so much to all of us!! Even though you can’t see it, you’ve helped many of us in so many different ways throughout your YouTube journey. Please continue being Joel, just Joel and, whether we like every video or not, we will always be here for you!!

Melissa Rogers

TBH I’ve seen scrubs and I’m Carla with a prescription pad. I love that show.

I don't think there is anything wrong with experimenting on the main channel. As long as you continue to make the viewer-attracting commentary videos, mixing in some creative songwriting videos shouldn't be a big problem. They won't get as many views at first but it is more likely those who watch the other videos will have a chance to see them. If, for some reason it isn't working, you can try something else. It doesn't have to be permanent if it doesn't work. I haven't done any research on this but do people look at what channel a video is on anymore or do they just look at the thumbnails that show up in their feed? Knowing that might help your decision. We appreciate you and support you. Go with your gut and let us know how we can help.

Hej, I think it makes sense all on your main channel, the playlists help too to find what we are into. Even if a video gets less views or doesn’t feel like it fits, the ones that connect to the video will find it and watch it , i think ya just gotta let those slowly build up in views . Each type of video reflects different parts of your talent & knowledge and you are funny and cute, so I always have stuff to come back and watch. Love your videos- the commentary ones are fun and light, and some of the creative ones/ or comedic ones are favorites of mine I can put on again and again to brighten my day too. Try not to overthink, it seems commentary can keep up regular viewership so if it was that most weeks- and a big cool video once a month or so, it keeps it exciting for everyone :) ya got this Joel. agree- we gotta keep going and try to have positive perspectives. 🖤

Hey Joel, thank you for sharing this with us! I actually agree with the other people here. At the end of the day, anything you put out on your channel will be reflecting different parts of yourself and your creative process, so I don't think you should stress too much about separating the type of videos or creative works you decide to release, especially if this takes a toll on you financially or otherwise. The playlist option should be enough for now if you want to feel like your channel is more "organized" for the viewers. Honestly, as humans, we all have different sides to ourselves and it's okay if you want to diversify your content, doing the same thing all over again can become really depressing and it can give you the feeling of stagnation, especially when comparing your evolution to others around you/in the field you work. While I think this is not something good for our mental health and we should avoid it, it's a trap we all fall in at some point in our lives and it's difficult to get out of it. I'm glad you started to release videos more often now and that you enjoy doing it. About it being a job at the end of the day and feeling that "resistance", I think a lot of creators that use their hobbies as source of income can relate to this, but I hope you find that balance that allows you to enjoy the process. I also think getting different points of view can help a lot to better understand yourself and the kind of path you want to take and it will translate in your work as well, as you might be getting new ideas you wanna try or apply them to your current work to make the entire process more engaging, not only for your audience, but for yourself as well. In any case, I'm not sure if this stranger's comment will be helping you in any way, but I will be supporting your work and your decisions as much as I can, as your content also helped me during a rough patch in my life. I wish you all the best and I look forward to your next releases! ☺️

I haven’t been here long, and I don’t know a whole lot about YouTube but what I can say is that I always set out to do and achieve what I set my mind to and I always did it. I’m my own unique person and bring that into everything I do. You have one of the most entertaining channels I’ve ever seen, and I’ve checked out a lot of them; we’ve kinda been stuck here. It’s not a cliche, following your heart and gut will never lead you wrong.

Bethany Bruner

I think building a whole new channel from the ground up will be really difficult to get the followers just to do original music. I think you could absolutely do it but it'll take time. If you sprinkle in creative videos in between commentary videos they may not get as many views and that may hurt the main channel. I think either way it's going to take a while to get people used to you doing original music again. So whichever way is easiest for you, if it's just running one channel do that. You just need to be patient and leave the songwriting videos up so that people can actually watch them.

Lianne Conroy

I say just go for it and those who want to stay will! I know you go back and forth on a lot of ideas and it’s hard to decide what to do and how to be creative while making money etc. I see that the people I watch who are successful, do what they love regardless. And people love genuine people who aren’t trying too hard etc. if that makes sense. Don’t be so hard on yourself with content. You just have to do your best every day and that’s it. :) love and appreciate you tons

Joel, if I could, I would give you a big hug rn . Thank you for always being so honest with us. That's why I admire you so much. Count on us forever. I hope everything goes well and I will be here to support you always. :) Ps I know it sounds silly because I live on the other side of the world. But I really admire the affection you treat us 🤍 Take care and it's okay to go through moments like this. I'm sure you'll find the right way. Things don't have to be perfect. Just be you and do what you love with passion. I'm sure everything will work out. Have a great weekend.

Joel, I’ll always be a fan of all your content, watching whichever channels you decide to post to, and whatever content you choose to create. Thank you for providing entertaining and wholesome content for so many years!!

Ultimately, this is your life, your art, and your job. None of us really know the music or yt scene, so our advice is going to be coming from the mindset of viewers that care about you and usually watch most, if not everything…. But we were all new to you once before… Have saying that… I was talking to Ames a few months ago. She makes music and releases them under so many different pen names. As a consumer of her music, this gets so hard to know when new stuff comes out, or when I want to tell others about her stuff. And she explained that each pen name is because she doesn’t feel like those songs or albums have the same sound or feel as others, so they deserve to be from a different part of her. And I understand that, a lot of people have different ways to express themselves and consider them different personalities… but in the end.. all those personalities are YOU. They build up to be one whole person, 3d. Not plastic. Each type of content you entertain us with, whether it’s these posts, the talking, the commentary, creative content, educational.. etc… they’re all parts of what makes you you. And the cool thing about everything being “on demand” is that we the viewers get to decide if we want to watch or skip… You can’t please everyone, so do what makes you continue doing… the people worth being there, will be there.

I always love hearing your ideas, and seeing what comes to fruition 🥰 I also must admit this Patreon community feels like “home” for the most part, I love being here 😁

This warms my heart Joel! I do believe being creative does matter and you're right about us all having different priorities, that's what makes us all unique. Also would like to note that we all have different opinions and ideas, that's what makes this community great. We may not all agree on everything but we can still be respectful and kind to one another. One thing we can all agree on is we love your content and you make all our lives much better! Looking forward to your more creative side as well even though I already see you as being a creative person. Cheers to even more creativity!🥂
