Patreon Exclusive Video: Is Ariana Grande's Comeback Single a Ripoff?

Changed my mind on this song a bit after filming it, I like it a lot more now so not posting it on the channel (don't want to spread undue negativity).

Hope your weekends are great!

Definitely an interesting take. I don't disagree either. But I do wonder if the point of making it so similar is to call back the fact that this has been going on for quite some time and it still doesn't seem to change in that respect. Did Madonna do something similar with going silent? Makes me wonder if the stone sculptures are supposed to be callbacks to each of those artists that have dealt with this behavior from society. Not sure.

Don't refrain yourself about reviewing brand new songs especially from the mainstream music. A commercial product or a piece of art is meant to be analyzed and subjectively judged. Plus, you made pertinent remarks.

I don’t think you were being too negative but thanks for sharing the video with us at least. Def sounds like ‘vouge’ and I think the song is good background music but I honestly cannot remember how the song goes minutes after hearing it- it’s forgettable for me. You should still feature it if you do another installment of songs that are copies.

Before I got the notification for this video, I’d seen where someone did a comparison of part of Ariana’s video with part of a Paula Abdul video (no, I don’t remember which one, I’m sorry). Not only is Paula Abdul a singer, but she’s also a choreographer. In the comparison clip I saw, they said that Ariana was “paying homage to Paula”…at least with some of the choreography. Maybe with the points you made in this video, Joel, she could be paying homage to both Madonna and Paula Abdul. To Madonna with the overall aesthetic of the video, and to Paula Abdul with some of the choreography. Just my thoughts…Damn, I wish I could remember where I saw that comparison clip, and remember which P.A. video was being compared to the new A.G. video.

Joel, constructive criticism in a polite manner is never out of vogue. Commercialism is the game, she took hiatus to build a desire. All artists have done this to create more $$, to have others be in a greater demand. To be reminded that she is allowing herself to be an object not an artist.....you knew. I can understand why this may have hit hard. I have hoped similarly on other artists.....free will and a contract. They signed a dotted line, in the end. They chose $$$ over what would have been right for their soul, their self worth. Another form of selfishness without true understanding of the consequences? Don't be so hard on yourself, for being honest. I gave them up, being honest (with respectful gentle words) is how we grow. How we evolve into being the best we can be. Don't apologize, unless you intended to be cruel. I don't think that is your intention... disappointment isn't negative. Please, hear and see my words Joel-pure intent to desire best for someone is devine in nature. To be that who we are desired to be is perfection. As close as we will be in this life, so don't stop, don't apologize. Be ever mindful of your intent, be respectful (which I feel you are). I hope I am also being that way with you. Being honest, with the right intention is everything, to me. ✌️✌️✌️❤️❤️❤️❤️😂😂😂😘

Oh just make it public! Or as Cas suggested, do a quick re-edit and add a "after a tenth listen" part. It's an opinion worth being out there, plus, imo it's a good idea to talk about current topics in order to keep being relevant.

Mona

It's messaging and look are very similar but the sound is worlds apart, in my opinion. I think Ariana's falls a little flat for me, as in, not as "fun" to listen to. But I don't see the issue with reprising a thought and feel from the past. I don't think it's a lack of ideas necessarily, but more a take on how some things decades later are still the same. Yes sounds, and things like fashion and art can by cyclical, like the 70s style that came back recently. However, I feel that doesn't have take away meaning and likability from the "new" stuff. Certainly it does sometimes (insert lame blatant ripoff here), but Ariana's song is not that. Oh and her video is perfection. It's he only reason I might listen to that song again.

StevaniAscends

Thank you for sharing it with us, Joel. I, actually, share the same thoughts. Honestly, there was nothing negative about it in the video. It's just an observation or a perspective from another musician/professional. If there's one feature about your commentary videos (apart from being creative and informative), it is the objective viewpoint. I've always admired your ability to express thoughts in such a respectful and considerate manner.

I couldn't agree more, it makes perfect sense, at least to me 😊 I mean, I don't listen to Chris Brown, that music has been ruined (and also it's not a rumor) 😅 but other than that, I don't want to know 🙉 I agree about the artists probably going through some pain and the art being the way to process it, or at least cope with it.. and when on top of that, the personal stuff (that might not even be true) is displayed for the whole world to see (and judge), it probably doesn't add up to their well-being or mental health, so I also see art as a separate from artist, unless it's really bad and proven, that ruins it for me even when the art is good 😅 But there are not that many artists like that

Nina L

Yeah when I first heard this song I immediately also thought of Vogue as well. I actually think Ariana's song is decent and her voice and the production are really good, but I don't really feel like her heart is in it tbh. Like even she thinks her song is just meh, I don't know, at least that's what I get from the music video.

Miriam

I'm trying to avoid it too. I also like to think of any art as an art piece and not so much who is the person behind it. Because like u said there would be way less music and art if all the work of people who are considered not a nice person, would be taken away. So many artists are somehow a bit broken or lived a tough life that has left a mark on them and that's why they can make art that moves people. And I'm not saying that some of the horrible stuff are ok, but that I can evaluate the art kinda separately.. I don't know if this makes any sense 😅

JustSomeJK

I try to avoid these things, even though it's not always possible. I heard some snippets, but I just don't want it to ruin the music, I feel like I couldn't listen to half of the artists with all the rumors (and who knows what the whole story is) 😅

Nina L

I had to google what's going on, since I don't follow celebrity news so much. Well that gives a bit different spin to the lyrics... I was thinking that it's directed to the media/social media that people shouldn't talk about things, when they don't know the whole story or overall that her personal life is her own business. But if it's directed to the guy's ex, like I saw some speculation, then that would be a bit heartless.

JustSomeJK

I can’t get over what she did in her personal life. Why should I care about her new song or her at all?

Stephanie Bruso

The song is boring to me but then i don't like her generally. I don't thinkbthis video is that shady, you could release it i think. Your comments are pretty balanced

Snoodle

It’s definitely not her best work. While i don’t mind nods to other music being done, this just seemed really boring

Shauna

Sweetener is my second favorite album of hers, Positions were nowhere near to these two, I listened to it only once. I'm excited to hear this new album 😃 but also trying not to expect anything. I love After Hours, for a while listened to it all the time and liked Dawn FM.. I can't wait for the new one, and to see how it changes

Nina L

I think this creative power duo took a great opportunity and really missed the mark here with this song. I’m just an average music listener with average intelligence, and to me, this new song is a boring wannabe facsimile of Madonna’s “Vogue”. Hitting the Next button with this one 🫤

Tun and Swt made me a fan of Ariana.🙏🏻 They are incredible albums. I had high expectations and when positions came out I thought it was really bad lol I really liked Yes,and? I hope this album is better. I'm waiting for the weeknd's new album too. I love it and I LOVE after hours. But if he's like Ariana it will be two good albums and one bad lol

Jess Haggstron

I didn't really like Positions either, but I liked a lot her album thank u, next (a lot of songs from there) 🤩

Nina L

You could do a quick re-edit with future you talking to past you about your changes in opinion. I have never really cared for Ariana Grande. I can hear her great voice and the production values but generally find the topics of her songs are not my thing. This is just another in a long line of "how wonderful I am songs." Joel not agreeing with himself? What? 😉

Cas

I was only able to listen, not see, this video. Became very curious about the music video of Arianas song. Thanks Joel 😆

Annelies

Omg I cant wait to watch it😍 But now I got to work. As an Arianator I loved it. I didn't like positions and I thought it was her weaker album so far. This song got me a lot, I hope this album is better.🙏🏻

Jess Haggstron

I love Ariana Grande- I think she's incredible but I really struggle with her music, I appreciate how put together it is and how much goes into it but to be honest I find it pretty boring (sorry!) 😬 My 10 year old daughter loves her though and was so excited to see this video ❤️

Hayley

When I first heard the song, I'm like hmm... sounds alright. I've encountered some songs that I couldn't grasp what's nice about it at first until I listen a couple more times before I slowly enjoyed it. It wasn't the case for this yes, and ?. Maybe because the song has bits of references that I'm already used to listening so it's just easy on my ears.

Ok so as I wrote in YouTube I was literally 45secs in to the song (not the gubbins at the beginning) and immediately thought "Updated Madonna Vogue!" then you said exactly the same after it finished 😂 I don't think your opinions on it were unfair, they were constructive. You said what you thought as a first impression, there's no reason to pull a video because it might upset AG fans. You need to tell us what changed your mind though because I still think this is Vogue 2.0 and I'm okay with that 😊.

Clair (Teampanda)

Hehe I just think I listened to it more and enjoyed it, and realized some more of the changes they made. They've also been very open with the inspiration from what I understand. It's creatively a little boring but very well done, and the melodies etc have some really interesting stuff that's very different

Joel Berghult

And may I add... Thank u Joel for this exclusive video 🥰 It was really interesting to hear your take on it! Was your secret new year's resolution to spoil us rotten (I'm not complaining) 😂 Feels like Roomie Official Christmas with all these videos 😍😄

JustSomeJK

Now I am curious what made you change your mind about the song. You made good points in the video, felt like it was your opinion, but also based on arguments and a bit of your expertise. I really dislike this trend of people not being able to say how they really feel about something if they don’t feel like it’s the best thing in the world. You were respectful with your opinion, you talked about the song being lacklustre while also finding bice things to say about the message. Don’t know why I got so heated about this.

Adina

I like a lot of Ariana's music, I liked this song at first (how it sounds), but your arguments and comparison with the song Vogue made me like it less (I heard it maybe once in a movie) 😅 I love that take on creativity, that the inspiration shouldn't come from one place.. I didn't feel that this video was negative, maybe a little bit edgy, but funny.. I am who I am, which is mostly Madonna 😅😂 (I love Ariana)

Nina L

I guess I will like the song better after listening a few times, but for me Madonnas Vouge is epic 🎶🎶

Elli

Not really an Ariana fan but I will always go into listening to a song with an open mind despite who it is. A great song is a great song. However, I thought this was very lackluster. There’s nothing that special about it. I guess not really what I would have expected as a “comeback single“. So, glad to see my sentiments are echoed in the comments so far 😂

Becky Lorion

Well, it’s Ariana - so whatever she releases now it will sell /stream in billions… Plus her personal life adds more public interest in her work. All eyes are on her because of her “love life” or plastic surgery controversial, so artistic values are on the 3rd place.. Song itself is boring as heck, Beyoncé started this 90’s music trend. Your opinion was right, not so controversial

Franceska

Great, I wasn't the only one hearing some familiar sounds in this song 😅 It must be quite close when amateur ear like me picked it up too 😁 I just wasn't able to put a song name on it. In addition to Madonna, it brought to my mind for some reason Take That songs "Everything Changes" and "Could it be Magic", but I guess it's just the sound overall that was popular back then... I like the song and the video. Maybe it's the nostalgic sound and the idea behind the lyrics that makes it nice for me, but probably not a song I will listen often still. I'm not a fan of Ariana or actually Madonna either (Madonna just has some iconic songs of that era). I guess I would have hoped Ariana's song to have more balls sort of speak with that kind of lyrics. I don't know if the point of it being so close to Vogue, was that Madonna is someone who has always had the I don't give a frick attitude... But yeah lazy thing to do.

JustSomeJK

This is the first of me hearing the new Ariana song and I knew from the first four bars that it was a Vogue ripoff 😅 I think you’ve brought up a topic that needs to be discussed more Joel as it’s backing up that people think that pop is becoming lazy and why should we listen to the new version when the old one existed? 🤔 But also, four years to come back with that? I’m honestly disappointed for her as she’s got way more potential than this, regardless of my overall opinion of her. She deserved a better comeback but I guess the fans will eat it up anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

Jen 🦙

I started to listen to it yesterday, got bored and turned it off. It didn’t sound new enough to keep my interest. It’s fine, and there’s probably an audience who will love it, but won’t be adding it to my playlist. What made you change your mind about it?
