Song Preview: "Decide"

Wrote this for the next installment in the songwriting series, but I think I'm gonna do that series a bit differently now (and show more process/real hanging instead of script as much) so I'm unsure what to do with this. However, I hope you enjoy it!

Lyrics:

I'll probably never have a kid

And won't afford a house

But maybe I can live

a life with friends that stick around

Won't be a billionaire

And won't have fancy things

Will probably never wear

A Rolex or a wedding ring

That ain't bad

I think I'm good with unexceptional life

Misunderstood myself but now I'm alright

Don't need the world to see

That nothing's wrong with me

My future's what I decide, decide

Comments

I really liked this. This is the kind of music I would like to listen to and it takes me back to the time when music was melodic and easy to the ear

Pilamitar

The minimalist and highly spiritual globetrotter that I am is totally feeling the lyrics. I'd choose the word unconventional over unexceptional but that's just me. A folk version would also be perfect with this type of topic.

Artemisia-the3rd

Time is fluid, time is a construct, we can choose what is to come. There are endless possibilities, and the only wrong path is the one where you don't choose life. Placing a dream, then shunning it, yes that is your choice. Please, don't let it be your only choice. Keep open to possibilities, never stop dreaming the dream. Dreams can and do come true✌️✌️✌️❤️❤️❤️😂😂😂

Gayle

He did say this series was going to be topics that interest him. So maybe a bit about him figuring himself out. But a bit about how everyone needs to make their life something they can accept

Lianne Conroy

@Snoodle & @LianneConroy With this song, and the last song on his latest video “Otherwise What Is The Point?”…I wonder how much of both of these songs are self reflection vs him writing from someone else’s perspective?! I mean, he’s great at using pure raw emotion in his voice when he’s singing. So that’s why I’m curious. Like Lianne said: explanation, please…because, like Snoodle said: his voice!!

Melissa Rogers

Ooohhh, I just love it!! Your falsettos are getting better and better!! Congratulations in another banger song. <3 <3

Sofía Reyes

Poopoo peepee, lmao 😂 Yeah and then they complain about it how it's so hard with the kids and their hobbies, husband doing or not doing something, them having no time for themselves.. And that's ok to vent about it, but sometimes I feel like saying, "so why u chose it, if it's so horrible".. Also what Joel mentioned in the video having babies instead of getting divorced, I know a couple where to keep the man the woman agreed to have a baby and one can guess what happened anyways, they broke up. One should live the life that feels good for them and makes them happy. It's just sad that if not living like the rest, people tend to think that something is wrong with u, u are selfish, u can't possibly understand them, try to fix u, or even leave u out of their lives etc.

JustSomeJK

Yeah! I notice it the most when I’m in my hometown where everyone got married at age 25 and has 3 kids and a dog and a cat and a white picket fence and I’m like… poopoo peepee 😎

emy

I can relate to this. It's so deeply rooted that one should do and have certain things, that one questions one's own feelings about them. Will I regret it later if I don't do this or that... And when everyone around u follows the "normal" path, it makes u feel alone and weird. It's in a way hard to imagine that life can be just as good if living it in your own way that might be unconventional.

JustSomeJK

* Relatable Decide Noises * Most who've not been fortunate to establish couple of "big" things in life could relate to these social pressures put on them. I can see this being a hit. Tack for sharing Mate🐺🐾

PhantomFidget

Always here for another singing/songwriting video! You’ve sounded great in all of them.

Dorie

Me likey!

Sugary Magnolia

Beautiful singing 🧡I have a feeling the song would work on tiktok, people like making photo/video collages on similar topics

Mona

Awww yes I can totally relate to this song!! 🥹 I definitely believe some things are destined/fated but like to think there is also free will and we decide what we want. Also it’s also good to be hopeful because you never know what may happen in the future!

Miriam

Parts of this really hit home for me. Thank you for sharing, Joel <3

Leah Miranda

Listening to this on repeat now and…damn this with “Slideshow” are two songs where I hear the lyrics and think “Wait did Joel steal my journal???” This might be the anthem for childless partnerless 30 somethings everywhere ❤️

Alle Engdahl

I hope you finish this one. I love songs about non-typical topics- and deciding to be happy with ‘unexceptional’ is a message that is good for many 🖤

xtina 🖤

Omg t These lyrics I saw myself in this song. Haha Even though I had a meh🤨 day, you made me happy with this song. Ty for share w us🤍

Jess Haggstron

Love the song!!💖💗

Bookdragon 43

Joel, beautiful, and definitely realistic but never say never. Life is a mystery, and there is always hope.✌️✌️✌️❤️❤️❤️😂😂😂

Gayle

And I am back to hoping that there is going to be tour/concerts at some point. The song is great.

Arinion

Agreed. Normalize forging your own path in life 🥰

Alle Engdahl

Me too. I go back and forth. I don’t know if this makes sense, but even realizing I didn’t WANT certain things in life made me feel alone and less relatable. Something that gives me a lot of comfort is the fact that there are SO MANY people I admire and want to be like who don’t have all the traditional markers of success. I think it’s because they have the courage to lead unconventional lives. And not being beholden to the usual factors for success gives them the freedom to be guided by the things they really care about

emy

I would definitely pay to see this musical! X

Snoodle

On behalf of all the non-conforming, lost-in-life 30-somethings: this needs to be an entire musical, thanks❤️

Sofie G

Yes this is what i thought. Not sure how to take it. Can be very important to work out what you value in life and leave the rest behind or to fate, but it also just sounds sad in a song. His voice tho! ❤️👌🏻

Snoodle

Realizing your life isn't going to be the way you always dreamed can be both good and bad. I would really like to hear some explanation for this song. I think a lot of people feel that way

Lianne Conroy

Love the melodies in the chorus 👌❤️ im not sure if the lyrics are positive or negative, it’s contentment within depression?

Calize

First 3 seconds of the song reminds me of System Of A Down (SOAD) “Toxicity” a lot! I even had “wait a minute I know this song” moment in my head 😂 P.S. I’m always happy to watch your songwriting videos ☺️

Helga 🦊

These lyrics are walking a tight rope between positivity and sadness and I can't decide if i like it tbh, i like the melody though and your voice

Snoodle

I got emotional about these lyrics too, I have been playing around with these thoughts in my head.. it's not easy to accept or to be ok about these things in this world were certain type of way of living is so expected.

JustSomeJK

Love this and I hope you work on it further as it’s such a healing song, it sounds like you’ve turned a corner ☺️ Loving the chromatic descending guitar riff, it really adds to the emotional factor of the song too alongside the lyrics! 😊 Also, looking forward to see where you take the new format if it’s gonna be less scripted!

Jen 🦙

Thanks for the lyrics 🙂❤️

JustSomeJK

Umm.. Relatable. Lol. I like the upbeat melodies! I think it's alright to switch around between scripted and process explanation type, whichever you feel more suited for the songs you're showcasing. Don't worry about what to do with this song. You'll always figure out in the end. *winks*

I read the lyrics first and was moved by them, I love the message (to be happy with the life you choose) and the melody of the song, how optimistic it sounds. The unscripted concept sounds interesting and fun

Nina L

If it's not too much extra work, could we get the lyrics? 🥹

JustSomeJK

Can’t wait to see what you change about the format. Have as much fun with it as you can, it’s a beginning so there are no rules ☺️

Adina

Interesting topic! And catchy song, liking the high notes 😊 This is such a great concept, music with real topics, musical rants are great 🎶🥰 I'm not sure what the plan is, but it sounds good with the showing more process 😊 I enjoyed the latest video a lot too, so I can't wait to see what u are cooking there 😁

JustSomeJK

This is funny but also sad. I won’t be able to afford a house either Joel lol

Stephanie Bruso

That is catch af! Love it! Excited to see what the next songwriting video brings.

Cas

That hit close to home for me. Becoming more at peace with the fact that I may not have the cookie-cutter life of the usual 30 something. Can’t wait to see where you go with this one 😊

Becky Lorion

Disappointed 🏠 wasn't rhymed with 🐭 That 1st "alright" is juicy! 👩🏻‍🍳😙 I like the sentiment of the song too. I think it'll work nicely to have the next video in this series to be more "real-time".

MediocreAtBest

Woah did you write this song or did I write this song?! Can relate so much already haha

Bua (mintteafortwo)

This made me tear up, so I hope you do something with it 🥲 I misheard the lyric as “I think I’m good with an exceptional life” and weirdly I think that’s what moved me so much? The idea that a person can absolutely have an exceptional life without necessarily having all of the trappings of conventional “success”

emy

Awh I love this so much! Sweet lyrics 🥹🥹

Elle Quinn

Ohhh can’t wait to see where this one goes!!
