Early Script Preview
Added 2023-12-07 18:53:45 +0000 UTCHey patrons,
I'm travelling today and won't be able to film - however I thought I'd post some early text from the next video - it's a format where I talk about a topic and then make a song on that theme. Here's some stuff I put down recently:
Every YouTuber became Buzzfeed
If you're relatively new to adtube, *cough* I mean youtube, you might not be aware of this - but people actually used to make videos WITHOUT GETTING PAID. It's so engrained in internet culture nowadays to have sponsors, optimize for retention, creators hiring big teams to help them, cutting corners where you can for efficiency, churning out frequent videos...
...but it was a very slow evolution, that happened through a lot of creators taking small steps, and a lot of viewers being disappointed who felt they were abandoning their roots and authenticity along the way.
For example, there was a big hullabaloo when PewDiePie hired an editor. HOW CAN THIS BE! How can someone NOT EDIT THEIR OWN VIDEOS! That seems like an insane reaction nowadays, doesn't it?
We also used to make fun of buzzfeed a lot, and how they were kind of invading this site full of individuals in a super corporate way, with investment capital etc. They had huge teams, budgets, and something felt baseline insincere about what they were doing and presenting. It felt more TV-like and les raw and grassroots.
Fast forward 10 years or so, and boy have things changed. Spending big amounts of money is the defining characteristic of a lot of the most popular videos on the platform. Having big teams is not only common, but something that people strive for. And while all this is natural, it comes with a cost, especially with the legacy expectation that YouTubers are more authentic than the alternatives.
That's all the preview I wanted to share for now! would love to hear your thoughts on this topic. The idea is to take a topic I find interesting and talk about it, while also using it as the fundament for a song.
Have a great thursday!
J

2023-12-11 11:15:02 +0000 UTCThat's like "reality" tv. I think you did mention the same problems with singing contests on television in a video.

2023-12-09 18:22:46 +0000 UTCSafe travels Joel! You bring very interesting topic, I'm glad to hear your POV - you are such an experienced creator. As an "ordinary viewer", I can assess the "professionalization" of YT in terms of the content I am looking for (and find it, or not), not the production background. For me, YT is still a "face" and a specific person/personality matters, their honesty - this is of great importance. The content of the "old" YT (from 7-10 years ago) was mainly stupid jokes, pranks, or challenges like "everyone dances/sings the same song" - now, fortunately, it has moved almost completely to tiktok. So yes, longer, more individual materials with the creator's thoughts, observations and POVs - just like your two last commentary videos about top Spotify music - make sense for me in your new formula. It showed, that you certainly don't need a super production machine for this! Love your videos because your ideas and constant creativity, and of course personality. Have a great time with your family btw

2023-12-08 16:45:13 +0000 UTCYour script sounds good so far, Joel. Although, the use of bullet points is also a good idea. Safe travels, have fun and take care of yourself!! Since you’ve been with YouTube through the majority (if not all) of this, I’m truly curious and excited to see this video. Hear your thoughts, insight and perspective on the evolution that YouTube has taken thus far…and to hear the song you create on the subject. BONUS!! Speaking of songs and singing them…I really miss listening to you playing your p-I-n-I-o while singing to us. It always makes my heart smile when I’m watching your older videos and you’re singing with your piano. 🫠🥰🎹🎤 Definitely looking forward to seeing your new videos and your new format.

2023-12-08 16:41:54 +0000 UTCI have never watched any Paul Brothers video and know only little about them 🫣😅 That's how new I am to YouTube and how limited selection of videos I watch 🤪 I think anyone who puts themselves out there, works their butts off to share their art, creativity and content, especially the ones who have worked their way through for years from doing videos for free to actually create a career for themselves earns some respect. It ain't easy. I don't know if there's a documentary about YouTube and it's evolution, but there should be, it's really interesting. I wish I would know more about it. I hope u reached ur destination safe and sound with all ur luggage with u and that u have fun times 🙂💙

2023-12-08 00:04:33 +0000 UTCGreat topic!! I was wondering about this topic myself. I can't wait for the video\song about it.

2023-12-07 23:25:34 +0000 UTCBedroom was meant as like gaming channels. Playing a game in their room. Not adult situations. It didn't sound weird to me at all until you said something about it.

2023-12-07 23:01:15 +0000 UTCInteresting topic, especially since I was thinking about how much it’s changed over the years, and how it’s harder to find the smaller, cozier feeling channels. Looking forward to hearing how this turns into a song. Happy travels!

2023-12-07 22:37:47 +0000 UTCYes! There might however be some cannibalizing side effects, especially if people pose as authentic but is very produced, or when there’s a limited audience for a topic and spam/content mills can push other out with sheer quantity. Lots to think about!
Joel Berghult
2023-12-07 22:32:25 +0000 UTCYeah I felt weird doing the bigger videos when I wasn’t as involved. We didn’t do very many until I realized it didn’t feel right tho.
Joel Berghult
2023-12-07 22:30:52 +0000 UTCI almost never do lol! But when I want to talk about something more difficult and push myself intellectually to say something I wouldn’t be able to come up with on the spot it’s needed. However I’ll probably end up just making a bullet point list and freestyling anyway lol

2023-12-07 22:29:51 +0000 UTCNot decided yet!

2023-12-07 22:27:56 +0000 UTCI would say there way a higher ratio of misfits before it got more economically beneficial for people - the money was what attracted people like the Paul brothers etc to the platform. And people can say what they want about them as people, but they did work extremely hard and were part of professionalizing youtube.
Joel Berghult
2023-12-07 22:26:53 +0000 UTCYou really chose a great topic ! I am so intrigued to see your take on this ! Youtube has evolved so much it feels like a different platform than it was 10 years ago. Anyways, I hope you have a great travel and take care of yourself ☺️

2023-12-07 22:23:04 +0000 UTCAny script that employs the word "hullabaloo" I'm in! Interested see to where this leads.

2023-12-07 21:51:18 +0000 UTCThank you for sharing this, sounds like a very interesting concept, can't wait for the video. I never watched any of those big youtube channels except yours, but it had that authentic and highly personal quality to it. Although I haven't seen much of the early youtubers content, I feel great respect for them, or for anyone who walked the unpaved road in their career (or life in general). Have a great thursday and safe travels 🧡

2023-12-07 21:14:58 +0000 UTCI think there's space for everything. It's up to us as consumers to find what we're interested in in the end. It's just like that outside the internet (in the "real" world). As far as music goes, it is the same thing. There is the debate between the more manufactured sense and what some ppl label as more "authentic" or whatever. Everything has its own qualities to like or dislike.
Dannielle O'Neill
2023-12-07 19:45:57 +0000 UTCI feel it's a good challenge to choose a debatable topic and create a song on it. You've always been trying to push boundaries in songwriting challenges and I'm really looking forward what you're going to come up with. Wish you a fabulous Thursday too. Till then, please take care and safe travels~~💜

2023-12-07 19:35:20 +0000 UTCWhilst I like Mr Beast and the big production you tube videos the organic sat and made some music in my bedroom still holds a place in my heart. Yes Buzz Feed/Genius et all figured they could pump out content and thus make money on quantity over quality and it kinda cheapened You Tube, but evolution has created kids that can only watch content that's under 8 mins and that's what they cater for. Music will always have an important place on You Tube it's just trying to figure out if it warrants big production or organic creation. It's an interesting topic especially when Big Musicians have their main music channel and a second channel for other content, clearly defining the difference they see in channel retention.

2023-12-07 19:27:05 +0000 UTCI'm new to YouTube (adtube is so accurate nowadays 😔) so I don't know how it was in the good old days. It's interesting to hear a little about those times. It's understandable that people want to get paid, after all influencer is a modern occupation. But it is really sad to see stuff that has no soul behind it and when it's super clear that the purpose is to make as much money as one make with as little effort as possible. And having people stealing or copying other people's stuff. I hope there will still be people like you showing their creativity and making the effort to bring something new out there. Being original is super hard nowadays though when millions of people are sharing stuff. I wonder if those massive amounts of ads have affected on the behavior of the viewers..

2023-12-07 19:19:31 +0000 UTCCommercialism, capitalism greed as a driving force is that which drowns the ideal and creative force behind spiritual growth. What do we(as humans) gain sacrificing dreams for greed? Are not dreams how we evolve? Dreams allow us to share and spread forms of love that lead to peace and joy. Greed (I believe) drowns those higher aspirations. Drags us down, and deprives ourselves to that which gives true strength......love. Thank you for the insight to give me understanding. 😘😘😘✌️✌️✌️

2023-12-07 19:14:03 +0000 UTCFrom what I understand this is a natural evolution for the platform. Bigger videos, larger teams, expensive production and the platform can support it. But, like other media, there is also a place for the independent creator. Like the music industry or the movie industry (note I said industry) there is still a valuable place for creators to realize a personal vision that doesn't need the cost and all the bells and whistles. Both can be successful but it is a matter of goals and scales. YouTube doesn't need to be one thing or another. It can be a money machine or a place to make art and a decent living. The creator just needs to decide who they want to be.

2023-12-07 19:09:30 +0000 UTCI like this format a lot, it’s a combination of old school stories and songwriting so it’s the best of both worlds 😊 would you be combining being on camera with animation or just in person? Hope you have save travels!

2023-12-07 19:06:44 +0000 UTCThis has me intrigued actually… I remember those days.. and when YouTube used to just be a site to upload videos to share with family and friends lol… so im curious how you’re gonna turn this into a song..: and how you’re going to turn this into a series without it seeming repetitive and like you’re always just putting something down (or advertising something)… I know you won’t:. I’m just curious how you’re gonna go about that… Will this information be filtered throughout while you’re figuring out the song pieces or will it be info dump and then “tada! Song!”… I think format matters here.. just… my opinion since you asked us 😅🫣 Safe travels and enjoy your family time!

2023-12-07 19:01:17 +0000 UTCA few of the YouTubers I watch went that way. They started out just making fun videos in their bedrooms or living rooms or whatever. Then they started getting bigger and bigger videos just to try and make money. A few of them have already started scaling back. Like yourself, and the videos seem to be getting better when they do scale back. It feels more authentic when it's just a person talking to you and doing a lot of it themselves or maybe one editor instead of a whole team. Although I'm older so maybe it just feels more nostalgic so I think it's better.
