I had to cancel the course

Hey gang,

Behind the scenes, things weren't going too hot for the course. It was just too many hours filmed to really edit, and the footage had issues like weird noise, shakiness, etc that we thought we could deal with because we've done it before, but not on this scale.

Creating a 25h+ thing is different from a 20min thing in terms of editing. Programs crashed a lot. Renders take hours, and when they go wrong, they take the same amount of hours again. Computers crash more when handling big files.

I want to let this experience and disappointment sink in, and come back to making a course at a later date. If this did anything, it was giving me a crash course in how to make a course, and how not to lol.

Sorry about this, those of you who looked forward to it. I spend about a month of my own time on it too, and stressed out about it a lot haha. Too bad.

When i approach it again, I have to make sure to go by the KISS rule (Keep It Simple Stupid) a lot more. Don't count on fixing shaky cameras in post - put the cameras on proper stands. Don't film obscene amounts of footage, even if it's full of good nuggets.

Etc etc etc

Anyway, I hope you all are well. I'm looking over catching up on all the stuff I had to put to the side while working on the course lmao. Music video is still in the works, as is other stuff. I'm actually feeling quite good about letting this monster project go, even though it was a LOT of wasted time I learned a ton :)

Hope the start of your weeks are better than mine haha!

So sorry that the music course didn't work out, but you learned many things in the making of the course. So that next time things should be easier for you!! I am always so impressed with your songs and videos. Hope you can find some time to relax!!

Bookdragon 43

Sad to hear you had to cancel 😞 you have put so much in it, but I also read a positive note, you learned something of it. That kind of mindset I am still trying to master 😜

Annelies

Sneaking in those nuggets, as you already do, is always welcome. Wasted time? No, it wasn't wasted. Sounds like you learned valuable insights. Looking forward to whatever you will produce, I've never been disappointed. Glad to hear that you want to come back. Hope you have taken the time to try and relax. 😘😘❤️❤️

Gayle

Aw Joel, I'm sorry. I feel you though, I had something similarish recently with work, where I was disappointed but also relieved I could get more time. KISS rule hehe I'm sure i've heard that before but, i like it.

xtina 🖤

I feel you. Hang on 🎶🎶

Elli

Sorry to hear to had to scrap (this version) of the course. But you'll be able to hit the ground running next time, looks like you've already gathered a few lessons learned! Take some time to decompress and refocus on other things 🫂 Best of luck!!

MediocreAtBest

I'm so sorry to hear what you've been through. In the midst of creating the course, you didn't give up whenever a problem creeps up on you. So kudos to you for persevering until the end. Glad to see you switch gears and reflect this experience as a progress to personal improvement. You can make use of ishikawa diagram so you'll have better insight the next attempt. Brilliance always comes after some setbacks. Rest well, have fun and keep your chin up, Joel~~

Are you still thinking of using/releasing the song at some point? You worked hard on that and it really is SO good in its own right. ❤️

Dannielle O'Neill

Awww. I'm sorry, Joel. I know you were working so hard on that. It's alright. Your time is not wasted if you learned something. You can always try again in the future. For now, take some time to regroup. Breathe and enjoy life again. ☺ we're all rooting for you. ❤

Trisa

That sucks. But. You did all the difficult work of actually planning and structuring the course, so the recording and editing itself is the smallest part of it - despite what it might look/feel like right now😉 you can always redo the practical stuff when the equipment wants to play ball again👍 (do not flush your course, please, you're 79% of the way already!)

Sofie G

Sorry it didn't go as planned but honestly good for you to walk away with the positive things in mind. It's not time wasted if it's time used to learn 🤓 have a great rest of your week ✌️

Nataliekey

I have gone through this before, but I have bosses to blame for unrealistic expectations from a project. I can relate a lot to the relief of letting go of something that seems like is never going to end. For me after a big project like this I find it helps to only take on tasks I am very familiar with and can be done and off my plate quickly. Didn’t you get a song out of it? Could you use just that part for a video or something like that?

Adina

I’m sorry it didn’t work out this time. I usually learn better from my mistakes and the second times goes much faster and better. It still sucks though. I hope letting this go is at least helping with some of the physical stress you’ve been feeling. 💕

Dorie

I’m sorry to hear that. But it’s definitely been a great learning experience for you and that’s what matters. All this means is that it will be even better if you do decide to come back to it!! Once again, remember to take some time to rest and chill out btw, we love ya ❤️

Rainbowz Grace

*dealing with things sensibly and realistically. Not being patronising, just not sure if that's a word you would have come across in English. Someone said it to me once and I had to Google it to be sure🤦🏻‍♀️😂

Hayley

Ahhhh man, I'm so sorry 😞 That was your baby! I love that you have such a pragmatic* way of dealing with it. Me? I'd want to crawl under my covers and die for a little while but if you can see the positives and learn from it then kudos to you. Onwards and upwards boi! As always- don't be afraid to take time out if you need it, I was a little worried after your last post and now this new bump in the road....Perhaps a little vacation or break might do you good right now. Trust me- I'm a mum and mums ALWAYS know best! Mycket kärlek x

Hayley

I'm sure it's frustrating, but, what better way to learn than from experience, right? Also, I've found that when something keeps going the wrong way, dropping everything and letting go, can be super relieving. You'll be fine 🧡

Like everyone here, i'm so sorry for you. I know, it's surely sad and frustrating for you but don't worry it will work out later, just take it easy at the moment and take the time you need. Keep going on what you want to do, it will be good. Anyway the week start pretty cool for me 👍. Thank you !!!

Magalie Leplus

Oh Joel... I'm so sorry to hear this... I know it must be eating at you more than you let on... But I trust your judgement. Hopefully you see it as more than just wasted time as you must have learned a ton! I'd definitely love to take a course from you sometime in the future. Until then, I'll enjoy all the other content you create ❤️ keep your chin up! You've got a lot of support behind you ^_^

SpyroShurtagul

So sorry to hear that the course hasn’t worked out, what’s meant to be will happen at a later point in time 😊 The way you’re looking at it even this early after the decision is incredibly positive and mature and you should be proud of yourself for that 👏🏻 Also, and most importantly, you’ve put yourself and being genuine first. You could’ve easy put something half assed out there just to please the masses and you’ve decided to stay true to high quality content and I think I speak for a lot when I say that we’re so grateful for doing so! Now, please take some time to unwind and take care of yourself 😅

Jen 🦙

Joel, I’m agreeing with everyone here. Sure, things didn’t pan out the way you hoped, at this time. But, like you said, you’ve learned valuable lessons about how to approach it again, at a later date. Of course we were all excited about this project/course. And we will be again, when you feel comfortable and inspired to give it another try. We want you to be happy and excited with what you release/post. It’s good that you’re thinking of this as a learning experience on how to improve things at a future date. Maybe using the K.I.S.S. method, you could record lessons for your course in smaller chunks. Making it easier to edit. Kinda like how you’ve been doing Twitch streams…recording three videos ( in this case, lessons) at a time. Editing those streams into shorter videos/ lessons. I don’t know if I was helpful at all. You have nothing to apologize for. We will always be here for you, Joel!! Through your ups and downs. For now, GET SOME SLEEP!! You can tackle something else tomorrow. But for now, rest those beautiful Bahama Blues and those powerful ears of yours. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🥹🫠🥰💙💛♾

Melissa Rogers

Oh shit! That must suck big time! I can imagine this thing is stressing you out a lot. I'm sure you'll eventually will create an even better course after this experience! Hope you're not to discouraged to start over. I'm glad though you're feeling like this lifts a heavy weight from your shoulders and that you can look at it like it was a massive learning experience. Big hug!

Marioni

Aww Joel no way I’m so sorry :( that’s so disappointing for you. Maybe the second time around the course might actually be in your favour and work out for you. I hope it does anyways 🤞🏽 wasting one’s own time is the literal worst, been there done that :( At least the stress of that has gone now :) sending out big hugs 😊

Elle Quinn

Damn, so sorry you had to cancel it. But I'm glad you at least have 1 big thing less to worry about rn. Sometimes it's good to know when to give up on some projects. I had that thinking while doing my diploma, that even if I don't make it, what I learned along the way is mine and I can always use it in future to make better stuff (I was really close to giving up, thankfully graduated). So yeah, hope u gained a lot from making the course and the future ones will go much more smoothly 🙏

Magdalena Slodczyk

Hey, I'm sorry to hear that the course didn't work out for now, but I'm sure when the time is right and you feel inspired to try again it will be a much easier and more enjoyable (and hopefully less stressful!) experience!! Also as you said you learnt a lot in the process and you wrote that great song for the course which is really awesome so don't feel like you wasted time. Sending you a virtual hug!! :)

Miriam

So sorry to hear… but learning from it still means something came from it.

Airyckah Lane

I mean you did start off with voices videos, so you'd probably do well with making lessons on something like that. Start at the basics (what you know best) kind of thing. When you say "music maky" do you mean production or like instrumental play? That makes sense in my head, but I don't know if it's coming across right. Hopefully it doesn't. 😆

Melissa

Oh Joel 😔, I'm sorry to read this, you've put in so much time and effort. Could you not use a render farm in order to lessen the strain on your resources? You're right, it's a lesson learnt, who knows, that content may come in useful one day? You do have so much going on and letting this go for now might ease that tension you've been experiencing. It's only Tuesday so you've got a whole week of little wins to achieve, go get um champ! X

Clair (Teampanda)

I’m sorry to hear that things didn’t work out this time, but like you said, it’s a learning experience and now you know how to approach things in the future. As always, I’m still excited for the other projects you have in store and I’ll be there every Friday, watching your new videos! 😎

loonylovesgood

Physical exercise is supposed to help with stress. But it could mess up your back so you got to find a balance.

Lianne Conroy

Thinkin about making it more singing centric, but it depends a bit what kinda videos I'm gonna be doing. Wanna do more music maky bits

Joel Berghult

no training recently, been too much with the course! Gonna dial it back in the next few days

Joel Berghult

I'm so sorry to hear that it didn't work out as u wished and hoped for 💙 It sucks to put so much work and time to something and not to get the reward u wanted. But dang ur attitude is golden 🤩 I hope ur week gets better towards the weekend 🙂 And I hope u get to have fun and relax a bit too 🙂

JustSomeJK

I'm sure that now you've made the long version and gotten all your thoughts and nuggets together it will be easier next time. Learning is good. Just put it on hold for a bit. The time was definitely not wasted.

Cas

Ugh sucks that it didn’t work out this time but I also feel like along with the “keep it simple” mentality, you’ll have all those references and it could be done even faster when you feel like going back to it. Least if the footage is no good, the concepts are! Also interesting how sometimes things find a way of ending/resolving or put aside when you’re getting overwhelmed (related or not). Seems it’s been going with others lately too. Random, but when one of my friends was training me at a job, she once said, “duh KIT, keep it simple” by accident. It was hilarious and the message still stuck so I actually use that sometimes when I ever have to train at work 🤭

Aleece

🥲 maybe you got too ambitious with what you wanted to do! Mr all or nothing 😅 well, good job with what you did and take what you learned. Maybe sometime you can take Blanks course & get some tips from that. It’s very simple but he explained a lot in a pretty short course. At least that’s one less thing to be stressed about now. 💜💜💜☺️

Aubrey Danielle

It can feel good to get stuff off your plate, even if it's putting that project on a " time out." We all know you guys worked so hard on trying to get it together, but as others said, we will enjoy it at a later date 😁

Misty Gerkman

It's ok for things to not always go exactly to plan. Definitely take your time to take a breather. It does sound like you got lessons out of the process and that is a product in itself. DON'T apologize to us. No disappointment here. Just here to support you in whatever you work on. Appreciate you 🥰 I'm kinda doing a similar reassessment of my own rn, but on a bit of a different scale...maybe going back for an additional education certificate bc I don't think I knew what I actually wanted when I started. Fell into a better place, I think.

Dannielle O'Neill

Sorry it didn't work out. But at least you know what to do next time. Knowledge is power. Glad you can catch up on the things that you put off for a while. Just stay positive.🙂

Melinda Young

Aaaaah I have SO been there Joel. I’m sorry for your disappointment but I’m not that sad to wait until the time is right for a Roomie course. Just think how much this process has added to your toolkit. When you do release a course it’s gonna kick some ass 💥 I will keep looking forward to it!

emy

I was kind of wondering how you were going to knock everything out so fast; but, hey, you live and you learn. I've never known anything but to go headfirst and dive deep into new things. Are you thinking of doing the same topic/ give it another go or go a completely different route? Either way, I'm sure you will kick it out of the park. Trial and error is the best lesson in life. Don't ever give up, you're incredible and I'll stand by that until you prove me wrong (which you haven't in the last like five years I've watched your work). For me, I'm also working nonstop. One day off in 14 days time... but it's worth it when you love what you do and it makes you happy. Just don't forget to take some time for yourself and personal things. Love you always. ❤️

Melissa

Noooooooooo! I'm sorry your big project didn't pan out. But, it's quite encouraging to know that you still were able to gain something out of a hellish experience. Hopefully the next attempt will go smoother for you and the team ❤

rosie - o.

Don’t give up it’s just not the right time! Focus on the important things and get yourself some time to rest and enjoy life

marlenies

I'm so sorry. You seemed so excited to do that course, but at least you recognize that it's not something you're going to be able to do at this point and you learned for next time. How's training for the 10k going?

Lianne Conroy

I think this is smart, and it’s not a failure at all. This just created a lesson learned file in your brain and I appreciate you valuing your work, effort, and us “students” to be. 😁 The opportunity cost will reap benefits down the line. 🤙

AnovaSig

At least you learned a lot and know how you can approach it when you pick it up next time. If it was causing you that much stress it’s not worth it right now. Glad to hear you can catch up on other things though!

Becky Lorion

When we learn, there's no waste of time. I'm sure this experience will lead you to an even better product in the future. Abracito.

Ave Castruita

Sometimes it's all for the best. It can feel good letting such a big thing go, especially when it's causing you so much stress. I'm sure you'll still do great things! And I'm glad you're looking at it as a learning experience. Way to think positively! 😊

Courtney Walker

I’m sorry

I'm so sorry it didn't work out for you this time, but at least you can use the experience to know what to do next time and hopefully it will go a lot smoother. I did tell you to stick to the KISS method, if I recall 😅 You live and learn right?
