Weekend update

Hey gang,

Chilled out a bit this weekend, excited to get back at it tomorrow. I've been low-key working on an ad for Keeps though, the hair loss prevention company. What did you think of the RAID ad in the last video? That was entirely written by me and my kind of humor, instead of written by chance which has been the case for a bit.

I'm enjoying working alone because what I make feels more "me", at the same time I know I need to bring others in eventually in order to upload more frequently. I guess I'm just trying to find the "New Roomie" right now, and involving others makes me stray from my own vision because I subconsciously cater to others a lot, I care a lot about others in a way I don't think they realize or even want all the time lol.

Oversharing deluxe here but I guess that's what Patreon is for hehe. I'm unsure if I'm gonna be streaming tomorrow, while I want to I need to work on this ad and I'm not sure how brands feel about you writing their ads on stream hehe (probably not a good idea).

I'm gonna cut together what we have so far streaming-wise for a songwriting video, but since I have a deadline for this sponsor I'm thinking I might end up doing a most streamed songs on Spotify 2022 video or something, maybe a little bit more higher effort than usual. But It does feel like straying from the goal a bit, since I want to make the channel more about creativity and have more things I make in the videos.

Anyway, always interested in your thoughts and feedback - let me know your thoughts :) I still really want to focus on songwriting and the stories/themes behind songs, but I realize of course we will have to connect to broader conversations with the videos to reach new audiences (and maybe collab with some other YouTubers which I love to do anyway). I guess I just want to make something really cool in every video, and most of the time it will be a real, awesome song. So yeah.

Lots of text again :P Appreciate you guys a lot. I'm also thinking about making a course for people who want to get into songwriting and singing, I would want to include my amazing vocal teacher and stuff, maybe other experts to make sure it all is the highest quality possible. A lot of the songwriting courses I've seen have been pretty bad to be honest, a lot of the Studio/Masterclass stuff is just someone really successful throwing something together willy nilly and it's not really thought through and a lot of things that can be explained are just shrugged off as "I just do it" lol. If I were to start out today I would like something way more fleshed out, so that might be one of the things I will do long term and kinda shout out instead of a sponsor in a lot of videos, in addition to my own music etc of course. I just wanna MAKE stuff you know???

Anyway, again, truly appreciate you guys. This scale-down has really got me connecting to reading what you guys want etc a lot more. It's been very motivating and fun.

Thank you :)

Joel

I know I've been really behind in checking out posts and such but I love reading what you have to say... I feel like I get a glimpse of who you are and what you're feeling through your writings. I definitely LOVE the course idea! As a singer who is trying to get better at being a YouTube creator, I do feel like I'm lacking in .... how to get myself out there. I do a lot of covers because, unfortunately, I don't know how to do much else. Like... I'll sing whatever but I can't write songs, I can't mix, I can't play instruments... And I would love to become something more than just a cover artist but it feels hard to move away from it all. If you had advice or a course for someone like me, I can see it being really successful! I can't be the only one feeling this way, right?

SpyroShurtagul

I love the idea of a course and teaming up with different experts and creating a professional and informative class, I'd certainly watch 😊👍 I'm an audiologist and linguist and did the in-ear-monitoring for the Tarzan musical and 'bat out of hell', so if you ever have any questions on these topics I'd happily share my knowledge 🤣✌️

Nataliekey

I know 2020 you uploaded like crazy, but there were so many fun ones besides commentary too- like swedish week, singing covers, sior, making a song with lyric generator, mash up collabs- although there was a lot of commentary there was also variety. I hope you do more singing (whether it’s mash ups or original music or a silly experiment) but we love your personality and your hella talented so ya can do anything and there is something for everyone to enjoy. I think it would be great if you still did some commentary videos here and there but mixed in with more creative videos too, or collabs, or record music videos to your new songs (even if it’s just you singing in your home studio- simplicity is fine too). Green screen videos were always fun too! Although commentary is entertaining, I bet people’s favorite videos of yours are ones where they laughed or were engaged with your personality (like Swedish week, ylyl) or ones where you sing. ily and hope ya get to have some your ideas come to life soon!

xtina 🖤

Oh Joel, I particularly love your sense of humor, I have not found another youtuber that I like so much, although there are several that I like how they are, but your humor is unique. So I hope you stick with doing it yourself, of course I also like changes from time to time and it's okay to delegate responsibilities.

Phoebe Grint

Yeah. And ppl ARE looking at you in that way, honestly. And, not that you don't want to chat w ppl, but it will be a good way to answer the question when ppl ask. Rather than trying to shove it all in a REALLY short answer. Ofc, you also have nerds like me who will just watch/listen to all of your big brain stuff for the sake of just hearing something interesting, even if we have no intention to "use" the information. Lol Appreciate you as always.

Dannielle O'Neill

the idea for me is to just get to the core of the songwriting/singing/music course. Shortcuts, basically. Because all the information is already out there, it's just that no one has put it together in a simple, yet powerful package. I want someone to tell me, at any point, "this is the clear easiest road to getting somewhere that won't waste your time, you won't have to second guess it". I want to be that for everyone

Joel Berghult

I've moved to asking people to work with me on a needed basis - to keep everyone's work schedules going I would have needed to keep making the old style content - the volume of uploads was what made having a big team possible. As far as Jonas and August goes, they both always had the ambition to focus a little bit more on their own stuff so I actually think the lower amount of work with me will help them with their own creative endeavours

Joel Berghult

That sound interesting and promising. I can't do other than encourage you in this way. The ad for Raid was a good one and well done. Your evolution is awseome.i would be interesting in your courses masterclasses, but i'm afraid i won't be that commited. But go for it, you will be a good teacher for sure.

Magalie Leplus

Thank you, Joel, for sharing these updates with us. Your insights are always a pleasure to read. As a detail-oriented person myself, I appreciate your commitment to being self-aware and striving for excellence in everything you do. I have no doubt that you will be able to enhance the experience of songwriting and singing classes.

Ornela

That sounds like an adventure! If I let my subconscious take the wheel I think I would run in circles and get nothing finished lol. It could be a fun way to discover new ideas you didn't even know you were thinking of.

Sugary Magnolia

This is the first thing I’m seeing upon waking at 6:30 am, lol. So bear with me if I sound a bit rambling. I think it’s good that you are trying to find videos that reflect your own ideas and who you really are! I’m excited and intrigued by everything you have written down here. (I wouldn’t mind seeing the Top Songs on Spotify of 2022, either, fwiw. I always love hearing your thoughts on songs, lol).

loonylovesgood

The Raid ad made me laugh and cringe (in a good way), so I could definitely see your humor and crazy energy coming through. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on getting back to what you want your channel to be. Glad you’re taking the time you want and need to get to content that you’re excited to put out. I love watching you be creative and getting hyped when you love what you’ve come up with. I think there’s still room for commentary on your channel, especially when you take the time to explain why you feel the way you do about a particular song, artist, or genre of song. It helps me pinpoint why I like, or hate, certain songs and helps me find new music. Keep being you. That’s what we’re all here for. 💕

Dorie

Just some random thoughts based on your brain dump and before reading other comments: What the channel has been missing is more Joel so writing your own ads and setting the tone Is perfectly fine. RAID ad was good. Less yelling is fine 😉 Easing your channel into being less about commentary and more about creativity is a good thing. Nothing wrong with doing a commentary vid now and then in the mix. Once you set the style for the channel again it will get easier. You don't need to stream all the time. Sometime you might want to refine your music without the chatter.Or just do things by yourself to surprise us. Patrons are here for the journey in addition to the final product. We appreciate you! The journey is exciting.

Cas

My daily reading is done for the day now! joking! I'm definitely in the "over sharing gang" too. I truly appreciate your honest updates. If you feel need to pepper in some commentary videos to keep the flow of the channel going that's fine. Just keep ing in mind the larger goal of the style of content you want on the channel. The commentary videos can still be plenty personality related. There was a couple last year where you had Chance or Daniel with you where you really took the time to explain your thoughts on each song. That was refreshing to watch at a time where other reaction vids could feel very rushed, like just trying to get one soundbite in for each song. As for YouTube ad reads, the only ones I don't spam the skip button on are the integrated skits. I hope the wigs come out if you're writing a Keeps ad skit hehe

MediocreAtBest

The Raid ad was fun. Not even gonna try to pretend my grown ass self didn't giggle lol. It definitely felt very "Roomie", if that makes sense lol. Ik it's scripted, but it rolls off better/more genuine when you use what comes more natural to you. I think that's in the same vein of what makes the streams so great. Especially, the last few. Idk if it's just me (anyone can chime in here)... I do love the streams/videos with "the boys". They're fun, you have good chemistry (obv). HOWEVER, having others on changes the way you can/can't go with the flow. That can occasionally feel stiff. And that feeds into the idea of making a course as well. Sometimes ppl think just bc someone is good at something they'll make the best tutorial. The most informative isn't really helpful if you can absorb anything bc the person has the personality of a saltine and if they just sit and drone on. The way you've presented things, explaining while you're actively making something, is much easier to digest for most people. That said...(PLEASE, don't take this as harsh. That's not how I roll.) I'm applying specifically to the course idea...You've talked about how you can tend to get caught up in one thing and get stuck for ages. It's good to have details to an extent. "Overexplaining" is a weird thing. It is counterintuitive to think there's ever "too much information". Ykwim. I also like the idea that you MAKE something in the process. It adds a lot of value to be able to say, "See this is what you get." at the end rather than just...."Do all of this...trust me." "Proof is in the pudding", as they say. Ok. Enough of my 730AM rambling! I hope you're having a great start to your day :)

Dannielle O'Neill

Your raid ad was great. Made me laugh. You are very creative and whatever you come up with will be great. Looking forward to seeing what's next.

Melinda Young

Doing things right always takes time. Try not to overthink. Figure out, as you say, the basics. Let them fly on the flagpole, so to speak, and let us help you tweak that way. We all think that you have so much insight and knowledge to share with us. The ad you wrote and performed....it was funny. Try to stay out of your head. No one ever wanted you to not be you. Keep it simple stupid, kiss, we forget that principle. I need to remind myself as well. Joel, you are amazing. I understand caring too much and how it can be misunderstood. It's okay, we're supposed to care. I've decided to not be afraid that I care. There's a good line in the movie Dune, "Fear is the little death.". It kills you from inside to be who you are meant to be. You are loved, don't go wild, but you are loved. 😘😊😊❤️

Gayle

For the songwriting course: I would love to learn from you and am already excited if you really make a course. As you said there are way too many of those shitty videos and I end up in watching 10 to get one simple answer. Cant wait to see what you create 🥳

Cheekii

I don’t feel like I have very much to add to this but I will say this, you’ve managed to build a career around who you are and you have a community that has your back. We’ve watched you switch things up previously and we’re still here for the ride so take the time you need to be completely comfortable and happy with your content, there’s literally no pressure to figure things out! I personally really enjoyed the last ad, I made me laugh and it really appealed to my chaotic side. The songwriting video excites me, it’s something I’ve always wanted to do but just haven’t found the confidence to do since I don’t feel like I have much to bring to the table and I find when you do edutainment videos, I feel inspired to start pushing myself out my comfort zone 🙂

Jen 🦙

I think i mentioned this the other day, one of my favorite videos you did was when you created t hat song "worth it" like anthony's digital ice age, where he took an old song he had written, and redid it for the video, before sending it off to his producer (joey izzo) to master and give us a listen. I think your knowledge of music, and your reputation for fun projects like that back in the day. You should return to those impression videos. You mentioned working alone, does that mean Jonas and August aren't working with you anymore or did I completely misunderstand that? (which ....i do do occasionally.. lol)

Aron Deamer

I feel like you doubt yourself a lot lately, so maybe you need to read this: you are good at your job Joel, you have been doing it for over 10 years, you are making a living from it and have paid others around you from it; more important than that there is a community of really good people supporting you, their quality reflects what you have done. Regarding the reaction content, I enjoy it just as much as the songwriting, if you want to feel more productive maybe you can try to make a video about songs that inspire you lately, not necessarily the top 100, you could tell us what part of what song you found interesting and why, maybe going through it this way will actually give you new ideas. For the ad portion of the video i appreciate the effort to make it interesting, but I was wondering if it is a requirement or not. If you could just do the ad read and get the money i personally don't need to be entertained by the ad itself, if retention during the ad is a thing I get it.

Adina

Glad you took time to chill this weekend! Definitely something you should do often 😊 thank you for the "oversharing" posts. It's nice hearing your headspace, thought process, and journey thus far. I think it's great that you are stripping back and making the ads more tailored to your humor. The RAID ad definitely felt reminiscent of older style videos. You ultimately have to do what makes you happy and proud 😁 it's sweet that you want to include others, but you can't lose yourself in pleasing others, you know? Whatever you get up to, I'm on board and here for the ride! Looking forward to your next endeavor ❤

Jessistache_73

I hope you can find it, but if you don't, don't beat yourself up over it. You can only handle so much, you know? And even if you used to be able to in the past, it doesn't mean you still can and that's okay too.

Mari

Gonna go a bit out of the box here... I used sing and do songwriting but I suffered from absolutely crippling stage fright and nothing I did could prevent that. So unfortunately I gave up any idea of a career in music. My single biggest regret in life. Obviously there's no magic cure for stage fright or anxiety but maybe somehow you could address it in a video? Coping techniques or show how far famous singers who used to struggle have come? Anither though was to show those who have a talent for writing but can't/don't want to perform other ways they can share their work? How to market/sell music? Anyway, enough rambling, nice to see you taking some time for yourself. As many of us have said before you're looking much happier and healthier. Just don't get too comfortable being on your own- or you'll end up a crazy old eccentric! X

Hayley

I think the songwriting stuff will still be comedy! I’ll never make the roomie channel a tutorial channel, perhaps it seemed like it with the last video but that’s not the plan… entertainment all the way!! …and sometimes edutainment

Joel Berghult

I get that, I just have a million ideas myself too so for now I want to keep my ideas mine, if that makes sense! Once things are rolling and I have a smooth path of production I can take in more other ideas :)

Joel Berghult

I feel that. This exploratory period is to find the sweet spot though, I want to be a lot more productive if I can :)

Joel Berghult

That sounds perfect! And I have no doubt you’ll make it fun.

Airyckah Lane

I have lists with thousands of ideas, but I find it often clouds my mind. Trying to let my subconscious process more recently and I think it’s helpful. We’ll see!

Joel Berghult

The idea is to make it super accessible but powerful and fun. I think I’m good at cutting out the boring/unnecessary and keeping it interesting so it should be what you want - basically a “clear easiest path” to get far with the least amount of time

Joel Berghult

Why not just have a separate channel for more professional serious videos about songwriting, music making, etc, and leave your roomieofficial one on purely commentary and comedy? I see a lot of others do that

Sarah Reilander

It’s the middle of the night here but I can’t fall asleep so here are couple of my thoughts after reading this post: 1) I always appreciate your honesty and courage to admit that not everything is so easy and maybe you aren’t quite sure yet what that “new Roomie” be like. 2) You don’t need to explain why you will film or upload simpler commentary video because there are people who like them a lot. 3) I like your channel because it’s mostly YOUR humour (even if it makes me eyeroll) that make me stay subscribed (and an awesome people in the community of course!). 4) Keep going, man! You can do it!

Helga 🦊

Not sure if this will be helpful but here's my thoughts. I have not been watching your channel very long. A few months ago YouTube recommended one of your videos out of nowhere. I don't watch any other music channels. I don't remember what the video was but I do remember there was one point where some song you were reacting to had a weird chord in it and you got very very excited. I had no idea what you were talking about but your enthusiasm and geeking out about it made me excited too. I ended up watching a bunch of your videos and subscribed that night. There have been a lot of videos lately where I haven't seen that and it's sort of made me sad for you. Like you didn't seem happy. To me you doing what makes you happy and excited is going to be the most exciting and engaging for the rest of us. Whatever that is. I really enjoyed watching the streams the other day because you seemed to be having a good time. Keep doing that and I'll keep watching. Even if it means uploading less often.

Lianne Conroy

I don’t know about the others, but I would prefer watching less videos of you than having loads of videos to watch but you not being in them…

Calize

Finding new paths usually puts us in situations where we have to choose, choosing makes us leaving things behind and embrace/learn/think of new ones... take the lead and we will follow, a lot of people in the community are really smart and love u, keep listening mostly to yourself and get from us what is useful... what I'm trying to say is that you're doing a great job.

Ave Castruita

The ad made me laugh! I would say I enjoyed it as much as the skit type ones Chance helped with. At this point I feel pretty biased because I’ve subbed to your channel for a while now and enjoy just about everything you put out - reaction videos were fun at first, but definitely got a bit routine. One of the draws to your channel for me was the variety(music experiments, challenges, mashups, remixes) Even when there was multiple of each type, each one felt new and fresh because each time something new was created. And always worth the wait. Not sure how helpful any of this was for you - but thanks for sharing your thought processes and reading our feedback! :)

Alle Engdahl

So glad to hear you're doing well, feeling motivated and actively excited and passionate about your craft again. That's inspiring to see. I'm always here no matter the twists and turns you choose or follow so I don't really have much to offer regarding input but I always have a ton of support, just know. "you're doing great sweetie 🤳"... Dead meme I know. Lol

x0_Kristin_0x

So glad you've are having a good time with what you are working on! Will definitely support whatever you put out! 😊 also did like the RAID ad! And drink lots of ☕

Misty Gerkman

I would still love for you to consider my email ideas. I would love for you to make a songwriting course. I have so many ideas for songs, but I don’t have the knowledge to write them

Stephanie Bruso

Appreciate you Joel!

Trushakes

Love it! Last AD was super funny 😆 Excited to see what your new flow is gonna be. ALSO, a course? Yes please, for the love of chickens I really want it 🤣 😎 🎶

Aubrey Danielle

Know what you mean about how helpful it can be to do things alone for a bit. My compass was entirely other people for a long time, and it’s nice to re-calibrate. I’m looking forward to you doing a course. I’ve done a few of the online courses on the songwriting/production side of things and yeah, my experience taking them as a student was pretty similar the way you describe. I have many thoughts on this topic! So excited to hear about your plans as they unfold.

emy

Thanks for the update! Loved the ad from the last video, the style was different but very entertaining. It sounds like there’s a lot going on too. It’s ok to cut down on how much content you put out in order to give extra attention to the things you’re excited about and want to make more high effort. Quality over quantity definitely.

Becky Lorion

I'm excited to hear you want to do you more. That's the most important, isn't it. take all the time you need to figure it out and it doesn't matter if you want to try different things out that might not work. I hope you find a way to combine making fun videos with making music and feeling productive and fulfilled. The music course sounds really interesting. I agree that some of the Studio courses are very 'I just do it'. Very disappointed. (not all, luckily). I would be very interested in learning from you! Keep up doing you! You're doing great!

Marioni

Hey Joel Boel, I whole heartedly agree that having time to reset and refocus is good for the soul. You just keep being you, it's that authenticity that makes you likeable and easy to watch. If you have a deadline to meet then keep it, don't get caught up chasing or doing other things for the quick win. I'm a people pleaser and an empathiser which is exhausting. You just have to try and remember you can't carry everyone all the time, even with broad shoulders the burden gets too heavy eventually. It's good to care what others think but you have to be mindful your opinion counts too and often your 'gut' feeling is the right path to take. I thought the RAID advert was definitely your humour and what made it funnier for me (I emphasize the me in this) because you were late for the valentine's day message, which was very anti valentine! I appreciate you keeping us in the loop, it feels good to be part of your online family and we all enjoy a good overshare! If you need help or a sounding board, you know where to find me! Xx

Clair (Teampanda)

It's hard to find the balance you want but also create consistent content. I don't think you should look for a "new roomie" if it ultimately takes away from your creativity and your vision. I think you just have to learn to be okay with not producing as much content as you'd like in order to do more in depth, better things. it's okay if you're not uploading as often as you used to. it's okay to evolve. you just have to trust the process and that what's meant for you, is meant for you and no matter what you do will change it or mess it up. it might take time to find exactly what you're looking for, but you won't ever find it unless you're willing to take risks. anyways I don't really care for sponsorships in videos, but I definitely prefer it when the creator makes their "ad" like a sketch instead of just talking about the product as it's more engaging. also can 100% can relate to caring about others more than they realize or want.. and well, you know how it goes. oh and I appreciate you too 💛

Mari

Glad to hear from you! It sounds like you have a lot of good ideas - many moving parts like usual lol. Do you have a dream board, or some place to list all of your ideas? Like Daniel does with his insane lists of ideas - it helps to be able to pick one when you need it. Excited to see what fun things you come up with! Even ads are entertaining lately.

Sugary Magnolia

I think a mix is great.. especially while finding your stride. The course sounds fun.. will it have levels for those just interested in learning more in general available too? I know that sometimes I find it hard to try something new because a lot of these online courses expect you to already have certain base knowledge… OR make learning that base knowledge super long and boring. Or even require you to have access to expensive equipment and software. That’s something to keep in mind to add diversity and to stand out more from the other courses out there.. and in general be more accessible. Just a thought. But I like this more “you” side. It’s fun. Thank you for letting us be a part of it.
