Some thoughts on upcoming videos
Added 2023-03-02 04:28:01 +0000 UTCHey Patrons,
Part of the deal with Patreon is that I let you into the process, and this is one of those times.
This break is not only for me to make music, but also for me to figure out the next step in the Roomie youtube evolution. I'm thinking and refining a lot around what it is I really want to focus on. One thing I've learned about myself is that I'm not very productive when my mind is split - basically, if music making and finishing songs isn't part of what I do creatively on youtube, I don't have the mental bandwidth to get it done. I get overwhelmed.
Therefore, the new ideas I'm looking at for youtube will have songs attached to them, that will be released at the same time. I'm currently thinking about different formats for that, how to do it smart, be able to jump on trends etc while making good, original music from it at the same time.
I think funny storytelling, somewhat in the vein of the new mashups video (but stories instead of tutorial, and me a bit more on camera) has a part in what's to come. I also think making music with suggestions from you guys is in there.
I also think some kind of competitions might be making comebacks, but it's a lot more difficult to make that work. One thing I always felt with the songwriting videos with Jonas & August was that our humors didn't necessarily align 100%, and not enough time was spent on making the journey to the product interesting.
I'd want to make the kind of video where the journey is the interesting thing, and the song is an awesome bonus, if that makes sense. I also think videos with a bunch of short songs/song ideas, and then one gets made into a real song, would make sense.
I'm doing a lot of thinking about the overall formats, and I'm very interested in your input.
Additionally, I want to figure out a system so that I can post a little video diary to you guys on here. I've remade my entire studio recently and things aren't as streamlined as they were, but I'm gonna figure it out.
Let me know your thoughts :) Sorry if this was a lot of text lol.

Idk at this point I don't even feel like I could even give any input, because I don't think I understand where you want to go with the channel. I thoroughly enjoyed the videos with Jonas and August and the filming of it over on twitch (I'm honestly so sad I missed the stream and kinda disappointed you didn't even post about it on here since this is 'the main social media platform your keeping us up to date on during your break' and there's no way of rewatching it) My favorite video to this day is still the 'hardest songs on the voice' , but I'm not sure if that's fits into your vision of the channel ✌️

2023-03-03 04:50:24 +0000 UTCPatreon decided not to give me any notifications lately so I’m a bit late, but here I go. My favourite video on the channel is the one guy 7 covers one, for a couple of reasons: you are not trying to be funny but you are, I find your humour more enjoyable when you are trying less, your natural reactions to things are funnier to me than the 💩 jokes. The other thing is that I always enjoy your interpretation of songs that are not your own, not because I don’t like the songs you write for yourself, but because for songs that I heard before it is so easy to see how talented you are, that’s just how my brain works, I am more impressed when I have a term of comparison, because I don’t understand too much about music or creativity, so interpretation is easier(?). I am pretty sure this doesn’t help you at all, and I really hope it doesn’t sound too harsh, because I actually have so much admiration for your drive to create music and be better at everything you do.

2023-03-02 19:24:31 +0000 UTCI like the storytelling videos and look forward to see you more on camera than in the last video :p . I liked the editing of the video but missed your face (not in a creepy way ;)) because it's fun to see you're having fun and vibe while making music/content. Your singing ("random" singing as well as while creating songs and perform mashups/covers) is one of the reasons I became interested in your channel. The videos with guests (other youtubers and non-youtubers) offer a fun variety :D But after all, do what gives you the most energy ;)

2023-03-02 15:24:44 +0000 UTCThis is just my prospective Roomie, but some of my favorite episodes you did, were the ones in which you were making a song. That one you did as a sponsorship to show off a bunch of plugins "Worth it" is some of my very favorite content on youtube. Anthony Vincent did the same thing with his song "digital ice age" where he went back and found a song he never finished, and redid the whole thing taking the whole audience with him, and it was outstanding.

2023-03-02 15:19:35 +0000 UTCLots of texts, you are correct there. But I read it all, for you, Joel. As a community, I feel we are supportive of you and your endeavors. Anything you want to try, try it. You want feedback from it, we'll give it. Just never make me read again. Thank you. Much <3

2023-03-02 14:46:32 +0000 UTCJoel, I know (and understand) that you want to make things (the songwriting process, etc.) funny for us. You want to make us happy and laugh, and I wholeheartedly appreciate that about you. But, as you undoubtedly know, life isn’t always easy or happy. Same goes for inspiration for your songs. Now, I don’t like seeing my favorite people sad and hurting (because it hurts my heart), but those videos are part of what makes you so relatable to us. And those are among my favorite of your videos, tbh. Allow me to (hopefully) make you chuckle a bit…for crying out loud Joel, would you do something about that leak in your ceiling!! (Too real, I’m sorry. Maybe there’s a song idea.) Anyway, again, I love and appreciate you and your content so freaking much!!

2023-03-02 14:43:05 +0000 UTCYour channel is quite different from what I typically watch on YouTube, but like with any other channel with a face on screen, the personality is what keeps me coming back. You're golden there. I'll be along for the ride with whatever content you put out there, I may enjoy some things more than others but that's just life. I think some of my favorite style of videos are where your personality and humor can shine through - like the songwriting competitions and storytimes. Having August and Jonas there too just added a great back and forth and balance to the videos. I do understand those videos are not an easy task though. The singular challenges were great too, and some of awesome songs out of them (Own You, Worth It). Fun to see you flex your creative muscle. Same with the viewer involved challenges. Maybe I just like the take on X prompt to make Y song vids in general. Thank you for letting us take a peek in on your thought process. (Sorry for rambling, only halfway thru my coffee)

2023-03-02 13:03:26 +0000 UTCI love the competition videos and collaborative stuff. Obviously, you're the main draw to the channel for a good lot of ppl. And one of my favorite parts of the hellscape that is the internet. It's early (I haven't had coffee), so idk if this will make sense and forgive me if it comes out wrong.... I think interacting with other ppl; be it a friend, a guest, the chat, gives more dimension. And it feels more like you're less stiff/bored. AND...having the songs to listen to after is something we all love. At the end of the day, what I want to see is a happy, fulfilled Joel. Really.

2023-03-02 12:56:35 +0000 UTCThank you for the update! I think you should do whatever works for you at the moment and makes you happy with what you are doing, if you enjoy yourself we can feel it and the content becomes better ! And it's okay to explore a little until you find what works, we will be here anyways!

2023-03-02 12:01:11 +0000 UTCI like the idea of more funny storytelling about making the songs (and more you 😉). I also like to hear what you’re listening to. I’ve found a lot of new music I might not have otherwise come across.

2023-03-02 11:44:53 +0000 UTCGahhh, that's a lot to take in but ultimately Joel you have to be doing something YOU love or there's no point. Your fans and supporters will stand by you whatever direction you choose to take. You're a smart guy with a whole load of talent and knowledge, humour and expertise, you'll work it out and I have no doubt that the end result will be something amazing xx

2023-03-02 08:29:22 +0000 UTCThanks for the update Joel 😊 It must be so difficult to run a business where the goal posts are moved so frequently and not by your own choice. I understand the productivity struggles, procrastination is my middle name when it comes to things that aren't my idea of interesting. (I'm looking at a pile of paperwork as I write that!) My YT subscriptions are made up of big production content, commentary, comedy, games, podcast and music channels. You've dabbled in all these areas, but ultimately what I would return to your channel for again and again is your music. Primarily I was drawn to your love of experimenting with sounds / concepts to make songs. You in a bath semi drowning for content was a highlight, as were the VR drums and helium experiments. For me there's nothing more satisfying than watching something come full circle from concept to completion and these videos provided that. Naturally as I continued watching you I enjoyed your storytelling, random skits, your humour, I mean, c'mon who can't fall for your gnome laugh! If you want to dabble in comedy, podcasts, gaming, do it, but remember you can collab with other creators on their channel like you used to. A perfect example of this was your recent podcast with Chance, which was hilarious and insightful. The channel will grow organically with that kind of self promotion because you come across as an intelligent, funny and humble guy who happens to have insanely great musical abilities! I think I've said this before, but keep it simple and do what makes you happy, it always comes across in a video if you enjoyed the process.
Clair (Teampanda)
2023-03-02 08:19:53 +0000 UTCI've been watching some of the old "comment songs" videos lately. They were mostly funny. Maybe take some comments here and make quick songs like that. But if there is a good one or two try to make them into a full song. I also really enjoyed the story telling videos. "How video games changed your life" and the "crushes" type videos. Do something like that and incorporate music?
Lianne Conroy
2023-03-02 07:58:19 +0000 UTCOne of the things that I have enjoyed most is watching videos where you seem really engaged, being creative and having a great time. Times like when you make a song in an hour or talk about a new plug in enthusiastically I find engaging not just for the content but it’s so much fun to watch you creating and having fun. An example,My favourite part of the microphones video was when you and Jax were running around singing your song.

2023-03-02 07:58:15 +0000 UTCSongs, storytelling sounds good to me❤️

2023-03-02 07:53:01 +0000 UTCProductivity overwhelm is an absolute mental olympics and something I fully relate to (so many ideas, no executions whatsoever!) Make sure you take the time you need to figure out your process to make you feel happy with your content first and foremost! Longer music videos definitely make sense at this point, your passion was showing again in your lastest video and that's what keeps people entertained. Ultimately, I think you need to follow your gut on this own but your entertaining process, storytime videos with music are my soft spot. That said, mini singing competitions with the viewers is an idea I've thought would be fun to see for a little while, I just don't know how you'd go about executing it? 🙂

2023-03-02 07:15:00 +0000 UTCEvolving is good, especially for oneself's sake. I'm glad you're focusing on your music. Also last video was was very fun and interesting in a different way, and your really good in this exercise. Sounds great to me that you want to release songs at the same time. Btw, i was getting busy and rushed by everydays life that's coming slowly back to normal and watching videos was maybe a little bit aside, but you catch me again. Thanks for having us updated, wish you the best.

2023-03-02 06:04:59 +0000 UTCUltimately, do whatever makes you happy. Also, I’d like to tell you the types of your videos that I enjoy the best and miss the most, if that’s okay. While I thoroughly enjoy your videos with Jonas and August, I miss the videos with your other friends as well: Daniel, Jack (JacksFilms), Gabe/BlackGryph0n (and your “rivalry” between each other), etc. Maybe (from time to time) you can incorporate your “Apple Juice” meme. I always love your storytelling videos, or when you allow yourself to “nerd out” and teach us the technical details of making music…I especially love (and miss) when you just “randomly” play your piano and sing…so beautiful 🫠🫠 I realize that this sounds like I want you to turn back time and do more of your older style videos. And, to a certain extent, maybe (ngl)…but maybe scatter some of that into your newer videos, in a more updated format/version. Maybe you could do a video where you and Gabe are doing a songwriting competition, instead of with Jonas and August. Maybe Jonas, August, Martin, or Kasper could be the judge. Or perhaps you and Doctor Mike could do a video on each other’s channels: on your channel, you could give him insight into how the songwriting process works. Then on his channel, the two of you could talk about your longtime experience with being vegan. (With him being a doctor, he’s done various 30 day diet challenges for his channel…one of them was a 30 day vegan diet challenge.). Ultimately, we all want to see you making the content that helps you grow as an: artist, musician, comedian, singer, person (as a whole); and that makes you happiest. Okay, I’ve rambled on for too long, I’m sorry. I hope that some of this helps in some way. I love and very much appreciate everything you’ve posted (both on here and on YouTube)!!

2023-03-02 05:53:55 +0000 UTCFull length songs would be nice 😊 I like the videos with all three of you but most often they are way to short so the process is presented to hasty. So, longer videos with longer songs 😊 personally i'd prefer if you guys had a bit more time to make them so they were actually songs you like and are proud to put your name on, rather than you having 3 hours and just end up with something to put in a video.

2023-03-02 05:36:49 +0000 UTCI'd love to see some more videos that also involve music education. I feel like you could make that more fun/interesting by doing it through you showing us the song progressions, if that makes sense. We'd be able to still see and give feedback on your work, but also get an inside view of how it's really done. It could cover a few things of what I feel you're talking about. Our input, your music production, and an interesting journey. I think doing it in a video diary format would also make things interesting and you wouldn't always have to make it strictly music. As far as humor, we all love your humor and it will always be a joy to watch anything, even if it is more for "entertainment" than anything else.

2023-03-02 05:25:44 +0000 UTCMy esl brain is overwhelmed, but here it goes... One of ghe things I enjoy the most is the storytelling you mention. When you worked with Jonas and August always felt like wanting more since it was so quick for everyone... I liked the "songs that made big impact for me" (sorry if it's not enterily correct) exactly bc the song was a bonus and the story was the main character, does this make sense? Ok, hope this can help your proccess. Abrazo ☺️

2023-03-02 05:17:47 +0000 UTCThanks Cas! Ideally I want multiple video formats that work, less boring for viewers and me alike. I might stream a bit more or have a side channel with "looser" stuff. I want the main song in each video to be "real" but satirical/funny etc can be part of videos where I have many little ideas. I wanna stream soon and write some songs on stream based on suggestions from you guys. I imagine some will be funny, some will connect to current issues etc. Then I can take that material, go over it, see what's good, what resonates with me etc and write a script for a story for the one that speaks to me the most. Then that can be one part of the video, where I comedically talk about the song I'm making, and talk about the process of making songs from all yalls suggestions. It'll probably be multiple streams because idk how many songs I can make in one stream haha

2023-03-02 05:14:46 +0000 UTCI'm really enjoying those videos (either) where you get your camera on and just film from your recording room like where your PC, etc. Is and give us like mini information about how the song that you're working on or have done in past or something and you break it down. Those break down videos for me is SUPER interesting, details , information, learning more on how the song is created , vocals , layering, lots and LOTS of "music nerd tech" but yet I guess u can now call myself an "music nerd tech" haha!!😂😂💗 Basically saying that I do really enjoying those types of content & I hope to see more of those, if and when possible (no pressure!)😂 @Roomie

2023-03-02 05:13:33 +0000 UTCThanks so much Rosie! Yeah the process is cool, but even more so the motivation behind the lyrics and vibe I think! I wanna find really cool stuff to make music inspired by, whether it's a current topic, video game, movie or something happening in my life. Historically I think I've put too much emphasis on tech and stuff with music and not enough on what the art is trying to say. ...But I want it to be absolutely hilarious

2023-03-02 05:13:24 +0000 UTCI think this is something a lot of people feel. YouTube recently has felt kind of stagnant, I think too many people are looking at Mr Beast etc which is cool, very broad content but other stuff grabs my attention and engages me more, but I don't really find it at the moment. Weird. I think it's become a bit too much of a business for many people. We all used to make fun of BuzzFeed a while back, and now I feel like many creators are becoming their own little version of buzzfeed

2023-03-02 05:08:06 +0000 UTCAwesome! Maybe sometimes it can just kinda be a video game or something and I talk about that in a hilarious way and then there's a song inspired by it and sometimes it can be something else like talking in a funny way about breakups or whatever. There's so many opportunities when you start with the inspiration for a song instead of the technicalities of song making

2023-03-02 05:07:47 +0000 UTCIt could be fun doing a "day in the life of Roomie" video. People are jumping all over this trend right now, fans love seeing someone they like show their daily routine. Like you talk about your vocal coach, personal trainer, etc. There's a pretty solid theory that you can neither cook nor wash dishes 😄 Prove em wrong! (Or right.) It's a fun way to attract new viewers, connect with your fans, and share some funny insights.

2023-03-02 05:07:04 +0000 UTCI think for me imo Joel, that this is a very good thing for u to write, give us insight, info , etc. On the things you've been working on or experience, exploring new things and such! I actually love those ideas you're coming up with, I'm very excited to see what's to come next. Yes, we all understand that some of those times with videos they don't seem to match up or "make any sense" that's probs most of the times it's that YouTube algorithm is all over the place , doesn't give the right showings most of times or something lol. Also, yeah we do love and appreciate those moments where you, Jonas , August, etc. Makes jokes or something funny or telling a backstory or something & you all seem to make fun each other, jokes and then it makes the video cuts but at the same time as you said doesn't seem to be placed in it ir seem like to have that in that moment or so. (If any of this is making sense to you, please let me know if you're confused about what I'm saying lol) The creatively of your song writing videos & song making challenges, showing us sometimes when you recorded a song or something & you give us some insights on it or in depth details on the song , instruments, vocals , etc. We enjoy those very much!🙂👏 I really wanna see more of those song writing/ song challenges videos. (if you can or if possible, not to force you or anything, just saying lol) Also been really liking, enjoying , finding very interesting for me of those non music videos or something idk how really to describe it but yeah if you know what I mean.😂 I've been trying it have sent (over few months ago or 1 or 2 years ago) emails to suggest video ideas whether it's non music ones I've "recently" sent out but don't actually know if it's been sent over to you or the Roomie team , so idk if any of my ideas/suggestions went thru. @Roomie

2023-03-02 05:05:45 +0000 UTCI'm not sure if commentary has stopped working, the reality was that the channel already changed a lot bringing in Jonas and August so much - it was a different kind of videos, that part of the people who were there for just videos with me didn't necessarily vibe with fully. But the reason I brought in Jonas & August was that I simply couldn't do it myself anymore - it had become too stale for me personally to do daily reaction videos, and I didn't feel creatively fulfilled while it also ate up all my focus like I explained above. That's why I'm thinking about where to take things next!

I think I could make really interesting videos that could focus on being hilarious and actually get across what the song is communicating - focusing too much on the technical side is kinda like watching a book writer talk about grammar. I'm interested in what the book is about, not the technicalities that helped you write it, even though I get that is important :)

2023-03-02 05:00:26 +0000 UTCI definitely understand it being hard to have the mental bandwidth to do multiple things. I think all of the things you outlined here sound like good ideas. I make music too so I'd love to watch videos about that process, and even people who don't I think would still find them interesting because they like you and your music. I think competitions in some form would be super fun too for community interaction. Also, I think a video diary would be really interesting, even if its just a camera off to the side while you work and don't really even talk or explain much.. they could just be casual little hello/check ins. I'd love to see you just do what you feel is right for you and resonates the most with you. Best of luck with figuring everything out!

2023-03-02 04:57:55 +0000 UTCCompetition videos are definitely on the table too! They're also just sooo much more work. But It's one of the avenues I want to explore, especially with special guests. Maybe we can get some famous musicians on, or influencers we pair up with good producers etc

2023-03-02 04:54:25 +0000 UTCI don't think it is a secret to Patrons that you are evolving your channel. If I understand you correctly, you want to make writing songs and the songs that you have written be part of your videos. In some ways you are coming full circle as this is where you started. However, you need to do it for today's YouTube audience and not be Charlie Puth cringe. And then once you have a video format that works, you need to be able to consistently replicate it so that these videos are trendy and topical as needed. I think I understand. You are correct that there needs to be a considerable amount of Joel in these videos. That is an important part of the content.Would you write one song per video or write and produce a song over 2 or more videos? Will you write satirical, topical songs or only serious songs? Of course with trendy things there is a chance they might go viral. Telling the making the song in a storytelling manner might work with segments on original idea, building the song from a beat and melody, refining, problem solving (dramatic), etc. Sorry for the brain dump. I'm excited for you and the channel.

2023-03-02 04:52:30 +0000 UTCPersonally, I thoroughly enjoy learning about the process behind a song. I think the end product is much better appreciated when it is understood. Also, i really like the commentary, but having several of those videos in a row can come across as a bit tired. Whatever direction you choose to take your channel, we will be there to support (and to let you know if we're vibing with it or not 😊)! Good luck!

2023-03-02 04:51:38 +0000 UTCI don’t know. YouTube is weird for me. I haven’t really watched any “new” content lately, except for yours. I keep going back to the YT videos I enjoyed in years past. I find a lot of comfort in those videos. So maybe your new content will help take me out of this “rut” I’m currently in, lol. Sorry, this wasn’t helpful feedback in the slightest, but just my random thoughts. 😅

2023-03-02 04:46:56 +0000 UTC🙌🏼 we share some same braincells in our comments lol 😂 I’ve just mentioned the same video as the one that made me to subscribe

2023-03-02 04:46:18 +0000 UTCGod, I relate so hard about the difficulty splitting your energies. Nice to know you’re not superhuman about that stuff. I’m pumped that songwriting is going to play a big part in what’s to come!! Love the idea of the song being a bonus. Amazing to be able to access the song afterwards, and watch the video mainly for the story. In the timed competition videos, tbh I already found the process/challenges more compelling than the songs a lot of the time. Always wanted more. There is SO MUCH about process that’s incredibly interesting. This is what I’m most excited to hear. I think it’s your specific process and approach to making stuff that initially hooked me on your channel. It’s something I’ve thought about before, because I’ve learned a lot from it, and you’ve changed my outlook in this way. Thanks for this great update, sorry so long! ETA: By 'process' I don't mean nerdy stuff, I'm more thinking overall approach to things like obstacles, where you get your ideas from, the drama of the competitions, funny conflict, etc.

2023-03-02 04:45:22 +0000 UTCI think it would be awesome if you did video story telling (with animation & edits) of how you made the song and then release the song, or do a music experiment or talk about music but incorporate your songs, like you did with the microphones but then released “it kills me” with it too! or how you sang backwards or sped up to your own songs :). Or simply just doing a fun video you like but promoting and premiering a new song too. Excited for what you will come up with!

2023-03-02 04:44:29 +0000 UTCThese ideas feel like coming back to the content you were making when I first found the channel - and I am so excited. 😁

2023-03-02 04:44:21 +0000 UTCBut on the other hand I catch myself quite often on the thought that you’re kinda pushing yourself or your limits when you try to provide some content on your channel as it seems to me that you don’t want do that and you want to focus only on writing music. But I also understand that Youtube is your job and sometimes you have to do it even when you don’t want. Sorry if I’m mistaken or my words are very direct. It’s just my observations

2023-03-02 04:44:02 +0000 UTCYes! 100% on the journey/process. I love that part.

2023-03-02 04:43:17 +0000 UTCI really really enjoyed the Waves Vocal Manipulator review video that gave us "Worth It" (a certerfied vibe, all the way). Maybe not all the time, but occasionally videos like that where you get to play around with software/plugins and create a song with it I think would be a good idea. This is my idea of "the journey is the interesting thing, and the song is an awesome bonus." 🥰

2023-03-02 04:41:55 +0000 UTCI’ve read the post till the end. I agree that your channel needs rebranding (not sure if it’s a good word 😅) because what was great as a daily commentary stuff during pandemic seems not working anymore or less interesting to people who got their lives at least partially back. I always preferred your singing/songwriting/comedic storytelling videos over commentary. Tbh I subscribed to the channel after watching one of those kind of videos (“Making A Song With A Voice Warper”) because I enjoyed the kinda story/jokes/interaction of you with a viewer and “Worth It” in the end was great!

2023-03-02 04:38:57 +0000 UTCitll be interesting to see what comes next and refreshing, competitions are dope when done right so it'd be cool to see ya do another, the journey is where it's at.

2023-03-02 04:38:03 +0000 UTCI don't know, I like variety. I like the collab videos because viewers will resonate differently with everyone in the video - I personally love August's music tastes and dad-type humor and watching the two of you "pick on him" is really funny to me. I really enjoyed the videos that went into music production in greater detail, but I know that can be a bit of a more niche audience compared to videos made solely for entertainment value. I would love to see a series that goes along with helping you work on the music that you want to. For example you could make several videos along your songwriting journey - some technical, some storytelling/ memory sharing/ inspiration detailing, some challenges, etc., and of course a final video debuting the finished piece.

2023-03-02 04:36:46 +0000 UTCIt's always hard to give 100% when you're split like that. I think adding your original music to videos is gonna be amazing. The competition videos are always fun but I do see what you're saying about the journey getting to the final result. I think the most important thing is to do what makes you the most happy. When we see you in the "zone", it just makes the video that much better. 😁

2023-03-02 04:34:11 +0000 UTCSo.. are you asking us what kind of content we want to see or what kind we want to be a part of or a mix of both? Either way, I think this kinda of change up sounds pretty awesome and true to you

2023-03-02 04:33:53 +0000 UTCValuing your own creative process above potentional success is a hard thing to do, so props for deciding to do it. I'm here for whatever you decide to do, so long as you enjoy doing it!

2023-03-02 04:31:19 +0000 UTClol I told you last year you should take the time to figure this out and maybe focus predominantly on music so I'm glad you're finally doing it! I'd definitely like to see some videos giving background of the inspo behind some of the songs/what they're about 👀 also want to add that I will support you in whatever direction you choose to go 💛
