The specific thing that hit me on first listen is the way you sing the word “how” in the line “you dont know how it feels.” Especially the first one. The timbre of your voice on those notes - kind of plaintive - pulls on the heartstrings. Something I always like about your music is how much you treat your voice as an instrument throughout, woven through the overall arrangement to add pops of colour/texture. But this one feels different. To me, the star here very much feels like it will be your natural, vulnerable delivery of the top line. It’s simple and beautiful right now and I want to hear as much of the ‘grain’ of your voice as I can. MOAR! Lol I don’t have a producer’s ear and can’t tell if this would come down to the arrangement, mix, etc. but hopefully you can make sense of what I mean. it popped out enough that it felt worth reflecting back to you. (I’m learning a lot from you sharing your stuff, it’s almost like a mini-course, so thanks!)

But, for me, that all gets buried in the vocal effects and instrumental. I guess I'm leaving my further judgment on what it sounds like until after you put your touch on it. Aubrey said, ‘it’s like a combo of Bieber and Puth,’ and those familiar sounds had me immediately gravitating towards it. Maybe after he shakes things up a bit, it’ll be more appealing to you? If not, that’s ok too— there’s no law that says we have to like every little thing an artist creates, appeal is subjective. Everybody has their reasons for liking or disliking stuff and those feelings are honest and valid.

But anyways, just glancing at the post title got Melanie Martinez's Training Wheels stuck in my head...so the familiarity with that song is kinda clouding my judgement here 😅 I like the lyrical concept you have so far, but the background music with it isn't really jiving to me yet.

The term training wheels is normally associated with positive learning so to use it as a negative connotation gives it such a sinister vibes. It definitely deserves a darker less upbeat vibe, maybe more rock style where you can apply more oomph to the feels?

This doesn't sound like him at all and the R&B influence is out of left field after stating how much he doesn't like that genre a few months ago, so why make a song that's R&B sounding? It sounds like all the generic shit on the radio that is easily forgettable and not something I'd go out of my way to listen to. Honestly, I would change stations if it came on the radio. It's just not good. I don't know how to explain it, but it doesn't have anything interesting about it and is simply boring. It's flat and monotone, nothing really pulls me in The lyrics got completely lost by how distracted I was with how much I didn't like the song itself. I don't know what you're doing, but this is absolutely not it. Can I ask what your music goals are and what direction you want to go with it? Right now it feels like everything is so all over the place and it's confusing. Having a distinct style that is your own will be beneficial and something you definitely should be focusing on more to figure out. 💛
