SONG BREAKDOWN (Joel) - Songs You Can't NOT Sing Along to

Hey gang,

Here's my breakdown - it accidentally got a little bit blurry but I will fix that for next time! This one might be interesting to the music nerds. Appreciate ya!

SONG BREAKDOWN (Joel) - Songs You Can't NOT Sing Along to

“I think that’s something I’ve learned about myself, that I have to feel everything.” I don’t know if everyone realizes what a profound and life-changing realization this is, Joel. I think this is something smart and talented people really have to understand at some point, especially. When you’re young and clever and able to understand a lot on a rational and intellectual level, there’s a tendency to want to use that intelligence to ‘skip over’ a lot of the emotions. I certainly remember this from my teens and 20s. A dear friend of my son may be the smartest person I’ve ever met. He’s a physics major, top of his class, really, incredibly bright. But he’s struggled with this part of not being able to skip over the hard emotions of a breakup, even if he knows everything about how he should ‘move on’ on an intellectual and psychological level. We has such a lovely talk about this just a few months ago. Anyway, I don’t know if I’m your oldest fan, but I might be in the running 😅. And what you said just hit me so hard. I hope the younger people who admire you so much can take this to heart. You bring a lot of joy in my life, Joel. Thank you so, so much. ❤️

I feel like I learn so much about music with you, although I don't understand everything, it still allows me to brag in front of friends ignorant of music (it's their fault, for not being part of Roomie's family). By the way, I love your singing and speaking voice! You are truly amazing. I can't wait to listen to the full songs of every challenge. ;)

That's what I was wondering, if Joel wants to be the face of the music or the brains behind the production or both.... I don't think you could be both because you would always criticize and overthink yourself. But he's talented enough to do both, I just think it would be hard to focus unless you knew what role you wanted. I know producers are credited but I wonder if they're ever a little jealous of the limelight 🤔

Sugary Magnolia

I'm by no means an expert BUT I believe a music producer's job is to be the one to mix and make the song sound good and appealing, so they would be the one in front of the computer doing all that stuff. There are a lot of artists who do produce their own music too, so you would have to look at who is credited for producing in the song info and a lot of times, it is in fact the singer/artist. Personally, I think Joel is a better producer than songwriter/singer but hey if he wants to do both, I'm all for it!

Mari

Also thank you for nerd content. I’m slowly learning production and this stuff is really fun to see

Even though I’m not a music nerd, I think these videos are turning me into one! This was so fun to listen to and gave me a good laugh. Very interesting to hear you explain, thanks Joel! 😊

Ok I have questions! Yes yes, more questions from me. So if you take an artist, say Harry Styles for example (love him) I can't see him sitting in front of a computer for days creating and mixing music. So does most of the music we hear actually happen in an office after the artist sings their vocals? Where you can create different tones/ backing vocals/ etc, is there even a use for a backup band these days? Other than live performances obviously. I'm picturing Harry showing up flipping his hair and feather boa, singing a few lines, and then waiting to perform on camera. Not meaning to downplay an artist's talents AT ALL, just saying that it seems like most of the work happens behind the scenes instead of previously when artists would spend days and days in a recording studio. So whoever is the face of the music isn't really the one creating it all. Do you feel a disconnect between your music programming compared to playing live? For example would you be happy playing guitar and singing, or are you always thinking of ways to enhance or change things while you're doing it (big brain, yeah?) Do you think that someone can be the face AND the brains behind music production? Can you be the Harry Styles in a feather boa as well as being the producer? Do you personally want to be one or the other, or try to figure out how to do both?

We appreciate you ❤️

You laughing at yourself was the best part. Also, buying new tech so the next song will be easier to produce. I do enjoy these breakdowns because I can learn a little but I am never going to produce music or listen to it the way you do. Tbh, if there is a choice required, I would prefer the DVD commentary with all you guys together. I think if you do this breakdown every time it will get old to us non music nerds pretty quickly. Are you going to release a full version?

Cas

Love that you can laugh at yourself and the decisions you made during a time crunch. (Not that I have a clue what even half the stuff you were showing is) Excited to see, well hear, the new microphone.

MediocreAtBest

Just finished watching. I like the big chorus and gang vocals you are doing a lot, hearing the chorus over and over makes me really want you to finish the song. Thanks for showing, looks complicated lol!

xtina 🖤

I don’t remember… why I pressed any of these buttons… Your post-timecrunch hangover is hilarious

emy

Am I a music nerd? No. Do I understand at least half of what’s going on in these song breakdown videos? Hell no. Do I like it? Yes! Because the more I know the faster I forget 🤣 Keep up the great work, Joel and the team!

Yes!! Especially with our boi Joel…what he thinks is imperfect (“why did you do that, Joel, you idiot!”); a lot of us fans (especially the non-musical ones) will be like “Joel, don’t be so hard on yourself and don’t change it!! This sounds amazing!!” Amiright?!

Melissa Rogers

Imperfection is perfection sometimes.

Dannielle O'Neill

I loved this song tbh. I appreciate the honesty, candid. I totally get what you're saying. I'm scared of being angry, so...I just go to sad. :( Therapy, ftw.

Dannielle O'Neill

The 50/50 of "I'm good at..." and "I'm am idiot." That's a mood. Love the nerd talk so much ❤️ Thanks for taking my money 💰

Dannielle O'Neill

You are incredibly talented, Joel! This was really fun to watch. Thank you for sharing! 🥹☺️
