‘You ask me to enter (answer?) then you make me crawl’ makes much more sense now too. I love songs written specifically about the singer’s conflict with their label, producer or band. Like Amy Shark’s “I Said Hi”, “Love Song” by Sara Berellies etc.

Krystal Jade

That's interesting. I haven't necessarily heard that song, but from the small snippet we got with the whole "trying to be Jesus for those lepers in your mind" made me think it was about one of those girls that go into a relationship to try to "fix" them.

SpyroShurtagul

Thought it was a love song, love these videos!!😍👍

Bookdragon 43

how is bono even pronounced

Laurel Pekarske

I thought it was a love song 😂

Kayla

Well if you do a video on most overrated bands, I think U2 should be included lol. Enjoyed the bonus as always tho :)

xtina 🖤

I love when songs are flexible. I think it's a sign of a good writer when their song is consumable by many because the listener can reflect on it in their own way. Everyone, including the artist with their original intent, gets something out of it.

It’s interesting to hear the back stories behind songs. I’m the type of person who likes to focus on meaning behind lyrics, so I rather like this series.

Also Joel should speak in Swedish more. Love it. More immigrants embracing their native languages still, please. Also Joel is my baseline for understanding the multitude of Swedish-based memes in this linguistics memes page I'm in (other than my pre-existing interest in how Old Norse influenced Old English and how Old Norse evolved into Swedish would also be an extension of that.)

I find them either ignorable or endearing. I've always found that I'm the worst person for an English-learner to practice with, because I will notice the mistakes, but not point them out, even when explicitly asked to because as long as I understood, I don't care at all. The trouble with being a linguist. A core concept in socio-linguistics is that our perceptions about other peoples' speech are not actually about the speech itself, but rather a reflection (or projection, I suppose) of our perceptions of other people as people. Joel's mispronunciations are endearing because he himself is endearing. And I cringe when I think back on how I teased my mom for her accent (just a little) when I was younger. Especially, and I will never forget this moment for as long as I live, after her husband said, to our faces, that he laughs when she speaks her native language because "it sounds like gibberish".

This is such an interesting series of videos. I really like it

Veronika Troll

I had no idea what this song was about so this was interesting. These extra videos are teaching me a lot about music in general, thanks for doing them!

Becky Lorion

I had no idea about this one! "One" came out in 1992 - I would be more afraid if Bono hadn't aged in 30 years 🤣 We can't all be ageless like you, Joel! Share coordinates to fountain of youth please. Seriously though, I'm loving these videos. I love music trivia and learning more about artists and their music. I must learn everything!

Sugary Magnolia

Interesting! I think my favourite lyrics are ones that are just specific enough that I can misinterpret/reinterpret them in a way that’s still powerful. Ps - today’s video was another banger! The best way to break up the day.

emy

I had no idea with this one. I don’t pay attention to lyrics that much, but when I do I like ones where you can explore different interpretations. It’s more interesting than lyrics that are too literal, but for some songs I guess it doesn’t matter. Hope there’ll be a part 3 in future!

Juniper loo

I think you notice Bono aging because he actually looks like he got older where you don’t. 😉

Dorie

I am in awe of Joel’s bilingual chops, but I admit to giggling at “BO-NO.” Legit though, Joel, you’re more articulate than a hell of a lot of native English speakers. I’ve taken lessons in Spanish, French, and Japanese, and I would never qualify myself as bilingual. Major props to you for that achievement. (And please don’t hate me for finding your rare mispronunciations hilarious.)

Shannon Kraushaar

I think this song came out with AIDs awareness too. It portrais the struggle of gay rights and how HIV men were discriminated against. "You are one but not the same" that because of your sexual orientation you can be outcast from society. A boring answer but I was a kid growing up through these years and had the Achtung Baby Album!

Clair (Teampanda)

I guess I'm just not a deep thinker as I usually take songs and lyrics at face value. (Unless related to The Weeknd - face, get it, I'll leave now)

Cas

You got me lol 🥰😚

Holly Baker

I had no idea what this one was about.. some are obvious... but others.. not so much... lol
