Singing Practice Video: That should be me
Added 2022-01-02 07:05:16 +0000 UTC
Recorded this for myself, while doing singing practice, and thought I could share with yall! It's kinda rough, I'm still learning the song (It's a vintage Justin Bieber song haha) but I thought that could be a fun look behind the scenes.
My vocal teacher has me work on covers as well as originals to expand my comfort zone. Generally I will do 2 practice sessions per day that are about an hour each, about 30-35 minutes of scales and 30 minutes of singing songs. When doing songs I will generally sing them two times just with a set of vowels ("My" usually works well with my voice) and then I sing it once with lyrics. That will usually make even challenging songs pretty easy after a week or two of consistent practice.
Hope you like, and please don't judge me too hard haha. It's still early stages for this song
Wow amazing ❤️ x

You mentioned you were still memorizing the lyrics and can’t go 100% until you have them down. I’m totally the same! I heard a little tightness in the back of your throat in the versus and that happens to me when I’m still learning a song. However, your execution is much much stronger than mine at this stage or at any stage!! Haha! ❤️❤️

Interesting....thanks for answering my question. I hope you don't mind the potential follow-up question based on what you said.
You said you were in the "reading lyrics/notes" stage of the song. Does that mean that your vocal coach is working on your sight singing? I know you've mentioned in the past that you consider sight singing off of the score alone without any prior listens of a song one of your musical weaknesses.
I also find it fascinating that you express that you cannot "really sing at 100%" until you fully memorized the lyrics. It makes it sound like full memorization of lyrics is an indicator that a song is performance ready/can be uploaded on YouTube. What are some other indicators that you have that make you feel that a song is truly ready - do you have separate guidelines for stage performances and YouTube uploads?
Because I know what you shared is a practice video, yet your performance already has the electricity of being live-performance ready for the stage.

I love this kind of BTS "how the music gets made" sort of stuff. I'm not at all a vocalist, but this sounds like a pretty decent workout of a song. Do you and/or your vocal coach usually choose songs with the intent to work on a particular facet of your voice? (In other words, deliberately choosing a song that is in a challenging range, or with unusual keys or runs?)
Thanks for sharing, truly. It may sound rough to your ears, but to the rest of us, it's just lovely. :)

Just re-read my previous comment, it wasn’t meant as criticism (but could possibly be read as such so I deleted it). Wanted to clarify, sorry! I was wondering if you record to listen what the things you do/change sound like? And when you sing, do you actively think about placement? Or do you feel it becomes like an automatic thing after a while? I really really enjoyed this!

We do that as well if there’s any phrases that need extra love. Generally just working on the song overall will get me all the way unless there’s fast runs or uncomfortable/unusual phrases in high registries for me. Interesting to hear about your experiences!

I always find it interesting and educational to watch how other singers approach practicing.
When I was singing, my vocal instructor and I would run through the song once and then work on specific phrases and runs for intonation. Of course I rarely sang in English, so that might have had something to do with it. I also used a piano track or would just pick out the notes and then "memorize" where I needed to be vocally. So seeing you and how you practice, whole different approach.
Thanks for sharing this Joel. Made me nostalgic.

I will generally just listen to the song a bunch of times, and then have lyrics in front of me with any notes I need to be aware of. But I can’t really sing a song at 100% before I’ve memorized the lyrics and moved away from being dependant on that. Right now I’m still in the “reading lyrics/notes” stage of this song

Thanks!! Yeah I think I’m somewhere inbetween patrick stump and Brendon Urie in terms of basic vocal tone, nice observation! Then of course there’s a lot I can do to modulate that, but that’s basically my starting point

This is great - I love seeing how the sauce gets made.
I love your enunciation of the lyrics - very tight and better than the original in my opinion.
When practicing with covers, do you normally have a copy of the score in front of you when you practice your vocals? My vocal coach always made me analyze the scores first for punctuation in lyrics and music phrasing for suggestions on where to take a breath while performing my vocals. It's so interesting to see where you are physically taking a breath to support the vocal runs you are doing while you sing - like go off Joel!

Thanks for sharing. It’s interesting to see the process of learning a song. I just belt everything out in the car and it’s probably a good thing I do it when there’s no passengers. 😬 But you sounded good and I’m looking forward to hearing how it progresses!

I know this is still unpolished, but you sound great! Can't wait when you master the song even more because I think this song fits your voice. As someone who also sings and records, I feel it takes a lot to post something unfinished like this. Thank you for sharing and for telling your practice routine too! I've actually been meaning to ask that to you, and now it has been answered :D Since I've found you, you have been an inspiration for me to keep on improving my singing as well. Thank you!

I suspected it would be Baby Beiber just by the lyrics but I went and searched for the original anyway.
I did find pre puberty Beiber but with Rascal Flatts, a combination that works surprisingly well, if not a little cringe 😬
It's so hard to sing someone elses song without replicating it but I think you did a nice job putting your style over it.
I've always likened your voice to Patrick Stump in terms of uniqueness and style so it's always interesting to see your take on songs that are more pop than rock.
Bravo 👏 it's nice to see and read the process of learning a song.
