Never Good Enough (Song Demo/Clip)

A little idea I came up with last night, thought you might wanna share hear it :) Might become something for the album if I figure out where to take it.

The idea is to write lyrics about negative thoughts/the mental struggles many of us have with ourselves. I've been tired of how so many songs are about love nowadays so I'm trying to broaden the spectrum of my own writing a little.

Thanks guys!

Reminds me of Michael McDonald for some reason. Great groove! You gotta fill this out.

Valerie Tisdel

Not me cleaning my kitchen catching myself singing this over a month later...nope. 🤭 ok...maybe.

Dannielle O'Neill

I really like the vibe of this!

After listening to this demo and reading the comments, I can't help but wonder why self-love/acceptance can be so hard. If I think about songs around this theme I either think about fighting the voices in your head or about fighting others who hold you back. The first type sounds a bit sad but is very relatable for me. The second appears to be more uplifting but, in the end, it feels more like revenge than celebrating yourself. I like to sing and dance to both, but why is accepting yourself so often associated with fighting? Anyway, I look forward to hearing the full song! I hope you can finish it without being too hard on yourself 😊

N. wondering

I think a lot of people can relate to the lyrics. I appreciate that you also share with us (also in the videos) this side of your life, not only the good things. Mental struggles are something, that should people more talk about. BTW the song is really catchy. Can´t wait to hear the full version, when you finish it :-) (sorry, if there is grammar issues, still learning :-) )

Maya

Anyone with Bad Anxiety/Internal Conflicts/Struggles (etc...) can relate to this deeply, Strong Bros Gang Ouh. Keep it up Bro 🐺🐾

PhantomFidget

This is really nice! And I like your thoughts on the whole thing. But I do hope you don't think that. You're more than enough and oh so loved ❤️

SpyroShurtagul

I love it, and I really like the idea behind it. There is more to life besides love

Misty Mitchell

The vocals are 🔥

DiamondK Zee

It reminds me of Bros, "I owe you nothing" but brought up to date! I don't know why it made me think that as melody wise it's not the same, maybe it's the 80s vibe or the stacked vocals sounding so crisp or even that it's upbeat when talking about something that's not as upbeat as it seems? I now have 40 seconds of you telling me I'm not good enough for you in my head 🤣🤣🤣🤣 but I like it ☺️

Clair (Teampanda)

I love that it is upbeat! Like "ok, life can suck, but, hey, always look on the bright side of life". And I like these vocals saying "you will never be good enough"...Kinda reflects our mental voices. Could be fun to stack those vocal layers more and more , and play with it, so the production's form adds an extra layer to the lyrics' substance. Anyway, pretty cool if this song see the light of day at some point!

Pouet

Love your song!! Thanks for sharing it with us🥰👍🎵

Bookdragon 43

This one reminds me of Slideshow (which I really like) just a little bit. That one has the pop song gleam, even though the lyrics are not happy times.

Snuggleisk

Yes lol

Alle Engdahl

"Sad as shit, let's dance" is a great genre. Excited to see where this one goes.

MediocreAtBest

Love this! Totally relate to this x

Rosann Taylor

Thanks for sharing! The way it sounds right now this is a vibe. Feels like something I'd want to sing along to (pitchy as it would be) when I'm just mad at life and I don't want to melt into a sad puddle. Did that make ANY sense whatsoever?

Dannielle O'Neill

Love the groove and the concept. Yes, there are too many love songs/breakup songs and we all have these feelings of not being good enough. I'll have to see where the song goes as to whether I would want to play it over and over. It is very catchy but playing it too much might reinforce negative thoughts I have. I am good enough. I am better than good enough. I am good. Aren't I?

Cas

I loved this so much! Seeing the title, I wasn’t expecting the song to have the feel that it did. A lot more upbeat which was a surprise! This is so relatable too. I think pretty much everyone deals with the self concept of not being good enough, despite what the outward appearances are. I love a good love song but there’s so much more in life that needs to be expressed. Really hoping you’re able to finish this one!

Becky Lorion

reminds me of that song you did way back about not having friends. they're both with negative feelings, though this one is more catchy. i agree that these topics are rarely expressed in songs, and it would be nice to listen to the songs you'll come up with.

Jean

I'd like for you to go with this idea. Being "never enough" is something that has always resonated with me and I'd totally listen the heck out of this song. By that title, I expected it to be on the slower side, but this is such a jam and I love that it is this way. And the adlibs on this is spot on too! Looking forward to the album even more :D Thank you for sharing this with us!

Ryndia

Uuu, sounds interesting 😲 And somehow reminds me of that one part in song "Allright" by Stuck in the Sound where they're like: "but remember, that your life is shit" 😅

Magdalena Slodczyk

Great beat, deep message... I'm here for it... Looking forward to seeing where you get with this. P.S. the little voice in my head never sounded better 🤪

Ave Castruita

I like the sad lyric but upbeat concept, and branching away from just love songs as well. Excited to see where you go with it!

Juniper loo

Love the song, love the vibe, love the fact that you put real emotions and feelings in your music. As a former (still probably) emo, I love me some sad songs. It’s always nice to know you’re not the only one who feels this way. ❤️

Anna

Hi. First of all, I'm so thankful you speak about mental illnesses. I also like the idea of giving the negative voices, well, a voice. However (and I hope I've learned these terms correctly), I'd prefer the lines in chest voice instead of head voice (or is it already falsetto?). Thank you for sharing this with us!

Sarah

Idek if this song should be making me bust some moves, or to sit in corner of my room and just really listen to it but also do ugly crying while listening and jamming, - dance it out while crying maybe perhaps? What do you think Joel? Or is this an toss up mix of emotions supposed to be that way lol Either way I'm thinking of doing both of those things so that I can experience/ experiment with my emotions a bit and see what I like more lol

CK DeP

Wow Joel, this is amazing! It's a pretty good thing to get things off your chest and not have to worry about them , even if it's still in the back of your mind , you can learn to train your mind or to shut it off here and there, Joel u have shown me the ups and downs thru things from it content and your music, we thank you so much, each time you release an song or video there's always something I'm learning from you and understanding how things work, whether it's bad relationships or just as you said , trying something new is a bit of struggle but once you do it out of ur comfort zone then you start to realize how cool amd different it feels. Thanks for taking the time & add ur ideas into your song, I think we can all agree that , all of us are feeling that feeling or that way , especially when with this whole craziness we hav in this world now , you've been really appreciated by us to share this story, ws can relate very much in this way, can't wait to hear the album ur creating! We can totally agree and understand what ur going thru or coming from so , hearing this song really takes an punch on us for many or different reasons or whatever we're going thru. Imo Joel, I feel like jumping out of ur comfort zones here and there is an good way to work with it and how it's going to work or how it's going to be difficult or different than from what ur used to doing , finding all sorts of things & using different paths for them, yeah sometimes it's hard but you just gotta break into it somehow & sometimes, other times you may like it , or you may hate it so much , but it's all up to u on how you feel, thanks for sharing with us an different way to show your feelings, emotions thru this music. Hope all is well, sending virtual hugs and wishes from Arizona Joel, stay safe , have an fun & safe holidays & happy new year, let's get this whole year out and away and this crazy virus gone forever lol 😍💕💯⭐🎼🧃👍🙂😎🎶🎵

CK DeP

I love this!! ❤❤I can feel the emotion and frustration through the music and lyrics. It reminds me of going through the struggle of trying to be perfect and how much it can weigh us down. So relatable!

Jasmin

Stepping out of your comfort zone (writing love songs or anything else) always feels risky. You’re definitely on the right way, Joel, if you want to change something in your songwriting. Would be very interesting to hear the whole song so then I can have more clear idea if I like it or not.

Helga 🦊

This resonates with me - I write too and I’m at a phase in my life where I don’t have that much to say about romantic love. There’s so much else that’s compelling and relatable about life and I’m excited that you’re going there. I think this speaks to the many other kinds of love that exist - like love for yourself and your life, etc. I hope there’s love in whatever this becomes.

emy

Like it a lot too.

Magalie Leplus

I hope you aren't drawing from current life experience too much for this, but I agree with everyone else that it's really good! Vocals are 🔥

Snuggleisk

Saw your comment on “sad as shit let’s dance”.. I love that concept. Have you heard “stupid feelings” by LANY? lol..that is what I think of with that description. I know it’s a short clip so you can take it anywhere, so far, it’s leaning too far into Maroon 5 vibe for my taste. I guess I like styles more like lauv, lany, valley—alt pop, for the “sad-let’s dance” feel rather than maroon 5, Bruno Mars funk-pop, but interested to see where it goes. I’m sure I’ll end up loving it.

xtina 🖤

This is the best brand of unique - the rhythm catches you while at the same time making you feel self-reflective. It's the mood I'm always looking for in a love song and you hit the nail on the head :D

inawordaverage

Interesting love songs are so annoying

Stephanie Bruso

ooooohhh that’s funky !!!!

Laurel Pekarske

“I’m sad as shit let’s dance”…I’m here for it

Alle Engdahl

Definitely be interesting to see what direction you do take this in. Im really digging the upbeat/funky vibe though, hella catchy!

Suzanne Collins

It's a funky groove! 👍

Trisa

Love it. I think a lot of people can relate to this concept.

Stacy Payette

Really enjoying the vibe of this. Would love to see how you continue that vibe with the message you are trying to portray. Its definitely a message that resonates with many (myself included). Also, those vocals are crazy good!

Jessi

Yooo Joel! The "I am sad as shit, let's dance" concept for the album is amazing! Highkey looking forward to dance while ✨ crying ✨

joie

Thanks! I think that’s where I want to take a lot of the album, kinda like a “I am sad as shit, let’s dance” type thing

Joel Berghult

The upbeat music with a really somber lyric is super jarring, but in a good, unexpected way. I'd like to hear where you go with this.

Heather Strong

Totally love the idea. Could see it working really well as a 16 bar bridge building both instrumentation and harmonies on each 4 bar repeat. Hope you do something more with this.

Hayden Smith

It is nice to change things up a bit. It's more common than I'd like that I tell myself this on loop, just like the clip.

Margaret McLaren

Definitely love the idea of broadening the spectrum on song concepts. I've toyed around with that (quite unsuccessfully) for a couple years now, so I can't wait to hear what this becomes. Personally, I hope it as a positive turn to it somewhere, even if it's just the bridge. Thanks for sharing! 🥰🎶💜

Kat

Yes Joel, this is what plays in my head 24/7 😄 Can't wait to see where it goes!

Sugary Magnolia

I like the idea of writing about negative feelings, I think it might be why “Livin For That” resonates with me more, so many songs are about heartache, and LFT feels relatable. Also- on a related note about demos- please finish “until I have U”- I like the chill vibe and love the song so far. Pleeasseee 🖤

xtina 🖤

Great idea! Reminds me of I Wish by Skee-Lo (but with less rapping.. this far).

ihavequestions

I love the concept! Such a relatable topic. I think it's always great to expand your horizons. 😊

Courtney Walker

Wow! I love how funky the beat is. And those ad libs!? Incredible. Would be very interesting to see where you take it. Could it have a positive spin or just remain somber? Either way, I dig it :)

Jessistache_73

Interested to see where you take this!

Alle Engdahl

I like it! Definitely something I say to myself every day and I say it way too much

Kayla

I think that's a great idea Joel.... Tbh it's more relateable to the reality of most of us.

x0_Kristin_0x

are you thinking on having it go with accepting the fact you just won't be good enough, or leaning more toward listing all the ways you believe you aren't?.. it's catchy and has that kind of 70s vibe to it

Airyckah Lane

I like the idea for your song, very relatable. Thank you so much for sharing 🤗

Phoebe Grint

I expected it to be a slow song and it wasn’t…..and I liked that. Also, very relatable right now.
