Jeremy's Patreon Pontification: TTRPG Ableism Rant (with Bonus Patriarchy Rant!)
Added 2024-03-20 16:36:29 +0000 UTCToday, Jeremy goes on a pair of rants about how disabled people deserve to be in all areas of life, including TTRPGs, and about how misogyny and patriarchy are bad! If you enjoy hearing people say those things, you'll probably enjoy this!
And here's a twitter thread on the subject of the first rant by an actual disabled person: https://twitter.com/popelizbet/status/1770222681800978819

I feel like that one episode of Star Trek where someone asks Jordi Le Forge why he is blind in the age of fancy technology explained it very well. Also it’s like, doing eugenics with magic? Also like, it’s so hard (if not impossible) to find a video game that allows you to actually represent yourself if you are physically disabled? The great thing about TTRPG is that you can customize to your heart’s content! Also like! Bro! If you have magical fantasy life you are going to have new magical fantasy diseases and disabilities! Let us come up with our own cool narratives and cool accessibility tools whether grounded in real life or not! Mage hand would be so fucking rad. That alone would be life changing. It would be cool to have more episodes with folks doing disability stuff in TTRPG. I really enjoyed the one y’all had earlier. Personally, I don’t know that I wanna give my DnD characters chronic pain and fatigue because I’m barely doing commoner life, no way I’m adventuring. But it doesn’t mean people shouldn’t. And maybe I’ll get to a point where I want to. The person’s character you mentioned with the fatigue aura sounds super rad. Disabled people are valuable in real life and in DnD. DnD is about customization to me, there is no such thing as “allowed.” It’s definitely ableism.

2024-03-26 18:20:39 +0000 UTCJeremy, I agree with you on the combat wheelchairs. What’s the problem with it being an option people can choose? As to what I liked in a boyfriend as a girl and young adult was probably not what the typical girl liked. If I had/have a type, it’s smart. Those are the ones who usually hang around the longest. Cute might get you a first date, but nothing past third. Yeah, we (heterosexual women) all want a guy who makes us feel feminine (and what exactly that is varies from woman to woman) , but we also want to be respected and loved. So, there’s a balance in order to be really attractive that goes beyond skin deep. Anyway, that’s my 50 cents.

2024-03-21 22:21:16 +0000 UTCNew ttrpg idea... Mortal Kombat wheelchairs... I have worked in disability for the past 10 years or so with people with increasing levels of diverse abilities and one thing I can say is, and there is verifiable data to back this up, that people with disabilities have a tendency to not complain in fear of being burdensome to those around them. It took me years of trust to have my peeps to be comfortable with responding to "how are you today?" With anything other than "ok" and be free to just "emotionally dump" how their days really were. And even longer to be comfortable to report abuse on another's behalf. Just the fact of being included would be the first hurdle (besides from just being talked to) but being able to see something that is closer to your own lived experience can go a really long way, and you will see just how amazing and capable people really are.
