Towards war with China? w/ Adam Tooze

Adam Tooze returns to PTO to discuss the extent to which war with China is increasingly being treated as a serious prospect in Washington and the Pentagon. We also talked about how successful, or otherwise, the Biden administration has been in constructing regional alliances against China during the last four years. And we went on to talk about why the Chinese Communist Party leadership's decisions over climate policy dwarf the US presidential election in significance. Finally, we discussed the economic slowdown in the country and Adam explained why he disagrees with analysts who see China's economic problems as primarily a consequence of increasing authoritarianism.

Fascinating, the last bit especially (but really the whole interview more generally). I've been waiting a long time to hear Adam directly expand on his view on more (or less) orthodox trotskyist theories of china's (and the stalinist ussr's) post world war accumulation regime's and indeed his view on china being sui genesis (which i have heard before). Thanks for bringing this out. I can't help but want to hear more on this, especially trying to tease out the more strategic conclusions this may have, if true, for socialist/ecosocialiat strategy amd ultimately organising (in the west and indeed beyond). It seems to me that a parochialising of the west is in a sense neccessary (even despite the ultimate characterisation of the Chinese system) as I think the trends towards relative decline of US hegemony seem clear, as pointed out by china's energy consumption/CO2 data too. I wonder Alex if you might be able to a) fashion some sort of question about this for Richard Seymour's next appearance on your show, whom I know comes out of the same state cap tradition that I do and b) more ambitiously perhaps, consider inviting Andreas Malm on to discuss this stuff, from his in my view really useful activist/militant/intellectual lens. Thanks
