Listener questions for Richard Seymour

Richard will be returning to PTO to answer more of your questions soon. You might like to ask Richard about the ongoing genocide and human catastrophe in Gaza, the US presidential race, the AfD's strong showing in the recent state elections in Germany, or the appointment of Michel Barnier as France's new Prime Minister.

Please send your questions to politicstheoryother@gmail.com with "listener questions" in the subject field, or comment below the line here. Unfortunately, due to the volume of questions we get it may not be possible for Richard to respond in every case, but we will try our best to get through as many as possible.

Thanks as ever for your support for the show!

It’s a pretty dispiriting outlook for anyone who wants to see a more “left” move in our societies. Labour is completely controlled by liberals/the Centre. And almost all the organizing spirit of the Labour Left has moved into the Greens; a movement/party that is sure to disappoint and move to the Centre at the first sniff of power. What is the hope that we have a more community spirited and left leaning society by 2034? I don’t see it!

Curious if you’re familiar with Dougald Hine and any of his writing on climate issues? I recently heard him give a talk and found a lot of what he was saying compelling, but am starting to notice a trend of folks with important insights around the climate crisis and its relationship to colonialism who fail to mention Gaza and the fight against colonialism playing out in front of our eyes. If you are familiar with any such writers, what do you make of this?

And of course, they are calling it Operation Summer Camps

Winter's coming, the weather's cold, the pensioners are cold, Labour's central policy of promisng that the worse is to come seems to be bearing fruit - does Richard see any grounds for optimism in the near or conceivable future? There seems to be less interest than ever in tackling war criminals, climate breakdown or inequality and the only political momentum seems to be behind irredentism and closed borders. Am I missing signs of hope?

What do you make of the larger scale Israeli attacks in the West Bank? What is the Israeli logic and should we expect to see increasingly widespread, destructive and deadly moves by the israeli military in the West Bank? Or should we expect this to be limited to historic hubs of resistance such as Jenin?

Seems like you've already thought about the appointment of Michel Barnier... I would like to hear Richard's reaction to it. I consume a good amount of French business media (don't ask) and they've gone from despair over a potential (nationalist socialist) RN victory to greater despair over an actually socialist NFP victory then to utter elation over the shock return of a pro-EU conservative technocrat. Suddenly they're optimistic about the potential for deficit reduction measures, an increase in the pension age and the minimum wage not increasing. Is this not what people - whether on the left or the right - are so upset about? Despite constant expressions of a desire for change, the preferences of capital and the market always have primacy.

Question: I recently saw Richard on a 1998 episode of question time. Comparing that to an episode now, it seems like the quality of public discussion has plummeted. What does Richard think is the reason for that? Also, why does Richard never appear on GB News or Talk Tv?
