OGL Questions for Kyle Brink!!!
Added 2023-02-01 16:43:22 +0000 UTCHullo, Patrons, have we got a doozy for you!
3BH have been offered an interview with none other than the D&D Team’s Executive Producer Kyle Brink on Thursday, February 2nd, and we want to hear from you!
The interview will be about the recent OGL controversy, fallout, and WotC's recent announcements about the OGL 1.0a and SRD 5.1. This is a huge issue that has impacted not just our show, but the entire TTRPG industry. While we have our own questions, we also want to voice your concerns as much as possible! We can't promise we'll get to every question, but the D&D team told us directly that "any question is on the table... we understand that this might include difficult questions, and that is okay", so don't be shy!
So what are you waiting for? Hit us with your burning OGL questions!!! You can drop them in the comments here, message us via Patreon, or contact the show by emailing secondbreakfast@tbhalflings.com!
(We'll be making a similar post on our Discord as well, so if you're part of that community then you can contact us there too)

1. What are the intentions for One D&D regarding the OGL and Creative Commons. 2. There remains much speculation on the how and why of the OGL deauthorization and revision debacle. Can you provide an overview of the decision-making process? Where in the D&D, WotC, and Hasbro organizations did the initial deauthorization ideas come from? What role did your lawyers play in drafting/review? What forums were offered for you and other creatives to push back on problematic ideas? 3. What is D&D/WotC's big takeaway from this? What is yours? 4. The CC was a good first step, but what additional ones is Wizard's planning to take for those players & creators either still on the fence or who have started to move from D&D the brand entirely? Why should we stay?

2023-02-02 11:12:13 +0000 UTCHow does WotC plan on rebuilding trust? And please please please Do Not let him trun it around and say something like "what do you think we should do?" It is not the victim's responsibility to do the labour to make it easier for the aggressor to make amends. That is their job. That is their responsibility to figure out.

2023-02-01 23:25:05 +0000 UTCAnother question: Is there a particular reason why Artificer has never been added to an updated SRD? Many fans want it but are there legal reasons that make this more complex than the original classes from the Basic Rules?

2023-02-01 23:15:27 +0000 UTCSome of the most disturbing leaks from the OGL mess indicated that WotC isn't a safe work environment for employees, which follows some earlier statements and leaks from years past around unsafe work environments and lack of diversity. What are you doing, as an executive, to ensure your employees, of all backgrounds, have a safe work environment?

2023-02-01 21:39:07 +0000 UTCNext question: The rapid and extensive shift from a private company’s stated aims from new restrictive licence to being even more open than before is quiet the 180. Without naming names, was there internal conflict over how this could be handled and how did the internal OpenDnD team win when they clearly started off behind?

2023-02-01 20:13:17 +0000 UTCNext question: The team moved rapidly to push out the draft OGL1.2 and then the adding of SRD5.1 to Creative Commons. While we appreciate the better communication, do you worried that you moved to fast on such important decisions?

2023-02-01 20:08:24 +0000 UTCOMG wow. First question: Did the team realise when the SRD5.1 was added to Creative Commons that it would include names of creatures like Strahd and the Beholder that would cause excitement, even if the state and mechanics were not released (and just the name)? Would you rather more time taken to modified the language of the SRD5.1 to ensure trademark protection?

2023-02-01 20:06:43 +0000 UTCWhy have NFTs been called out specifically? Does WotC plan to sell D&D NFTs? If so, how will the company reconcile the negative environmental impacts of NFTs with the generally positive environmental messages embodied by classes like the Druid?

2023-02-01 18:24:14 +0000 UTCI wouldn't get too specific necessarily... I would maybe just ask "How did such a big misjudgment happen?" (maybe follow up with "Was it driven from very senior levels?"), And "What has been learnt for the future from all of this?"

2023-02-01 17:12:39 +0000 UTCWhy do you even feel the need to change the OGL? It’s existence doesn’t seem to be affecting your bottom line, and all of this controversy has alienated a lot of players. As the largest publisher of TTRPGs, you have a duty to not ruin the space for smaller publishers. Having a monopoly on the market stifles creativity and goes against the intent of the original game. Also, the OGL helps players address glaring issues in your game that you aren’t fixing (accessibility, representation).

2023-02-01 16:59:59 +0000 UTCThese are related questions. I understand all three won’t be answered, but perhaps other questions will be similar enough to group them together. 1. The Creative Commons now covers all of SRD 5.1. Is it the intention of WotC to add OneD&D content to this SRD, or will we be rehashing all of this again when that content is ready for release under a new OGL. 2. Given that WotC itself is no stranger to having issues with flagrantly insensitive or harmful content, even as recently as this year, what steps are you taking to make more specific criteria for what might be deemed offensive. Also, once again given the company’s own struggles with these issues, do you think there should be a reasonable internal appeals process so that mistakes made out of genuine ignorance to not cost creators their entire careers? 3. Even if we agree that current intentions are pure, how can the current regime guarantee that vague languages in any new OGL for potential OneD&D content moving forward aren’t weaponized by future leadership? For example: say a heavily conservative leadership takes over and all of the sudden they consider Pro LGBTQ+ content to be harmful and offensive?
