Sure, they can get a d8 for an unarmed strick, and it is better than the monks. But the monk can use their bonus action to punch early on, giving them 2d4+ their modifier twice if they hit both times

I’ve played rangers and they’ve been pretty good ever since Tasha’s—I think it’s easy to not see how powerful interactions can be during play. A lot of the issues with rangers are essentially issues with the exploration “pillar.” Alas, D&D is still primarily a combat game. 😔
