Recording of Preparing for the Eclipse (Nebula Photos Themed Chat #3)

We had a nice 2 hour chat last night on 'Preparing for the Eclipse.' As I said at the end, I'm still available for the next week to answer questions through messages here on Patreon. In the five days leading up to the eclipse, I'll be mostly unavailable as I'll be driving down to Texas from New Hampshire.

Thanks a lot

Yes should be okay, try a custom white balance using a white or gray card under daylight and it should fix the pink issue. If the color is still a little off, you can fix in post processing.

Thank you, for the tips.. my second eclipse but first taking pictures on my tripod. I hope everyone gets to see it.

I have a Astro modified full spectrum Canon 60 Mark two, would it be OK to shoot the eclipse with this as I see that the are pictures are all in pink

Vijay Kantamneni

Thank you. It is true I was just looking in back LCD. I will give it a try in LR. Hoping the cloud forecast improves!

On any OS, ffmpeg (https://ffmpeg.org/) can do this, but it's command line only. A number of astro-specific programs can also stack frames from a video, but you may have to convert it from MP4 to AVI

Very normal. I am guessing the pictures you've seen were processed (not straight from camera). Try applying some sharpening in post, and you'll see the sunspots crisp up nicely with some adjustments to the 'clarity' slider or unsharp mask filter. I agree manual focus on the sun is best, but just be aware it will look a little soft even at best focus due to shooting through the atmosphere at high magnification.

I thought I heard during this chat session what software to use to split an MP4 video into its images. What software do you recommend?

James

Appreciate all the information you are putting out there to help everyone. Thanks

I am practicing like a fiend for shooting in TX but I am still struggling to get good focus. Using a Sony A1 with 200-600 at 600 mm, f/11, bracketing. Try as I might the edge of sun and sunspots appear a bit soft. I have seen pictures that are really sharp. Any ideas? I have tried focusing on a terrestrial object at infinity and taping focus ring, but I think manual focus on the sun is still better. Thanks.
