Hello all, I have another Patreon Exclusive video for you today. This one demonstrates:

Depending on how you approach this month's imaging challenge, this video may help. And even outside of this month's challenge, if you ever come across something unusual in one of your images, this video will show you how to find out if it has already been catalogued.

Tools demonstrated or mentioned in video:

Aladin Lite

No, you'd have to dig into it to know when the imagery was captured. They are typically not updated, instead new survey projects at a different scale/wavelengths are initiated every few years. The one amateurs use most often, the DSS (digitized sky survey) was mostly photographed in the 1950s (on large glass plates with big telescopes), and digitized in the 1990s. For the most part, deep sky objects don't change much in 80 years so what was photographed in the 1950s is still relevant today. The next big survey in the optical (visual) wavelengths is about to start in 2025, and is called the 'Large Synoptic Survey' undertaken by the Vera Rubin Telescope: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vera_C._Rubin_Observatory but it looks like it won't be until 2027 that the data will be public.

Do these surveys have time and dates listed for when they were captured? And do you know or the frequency of how often they are updated?

Thank you!

Hi Balvant, I'm trying to work out the video playback problem with Patreon. Could you let me know what operating system and web browser you were using when you had the buffering problems? Thanks! Nico

Nico Carver

Hi Balvant, Sorry to hear that. I'm not having the same issues on my end, but I've reported it to Patreon, and I'll see what they say. I've uploaded it to YouTube as a backup: https://youtu.be/wfkaMQRuItk

Video stream is not continuous...lot of buffering. Is this available on YouTube?

Balvant Patel

Aladin and Simbad are famous people from Arabic tales. Before using websites, astrophotographers should read these tales.

Thanks, Nico! I already used it. My object that wasn’t is Stellarium or Telescopius was found by CDS. It was a small H2 region in Vulpeculla found in the Sharpless catalogue . Still might use for the challenge even though it’s not a new discovery.
