I think in this case, it seemed like the association of "light" with good and "dark" with evil was less of a Tolkien thing than a western culture thing. Totally agree that the language we use to describe morality has connotations outside of our initial intentions. I'd have to re-listen to the episode to know exactly which part you're responding to, but I agree with the various points you're making.

2021-08-18 01:00:23 +0000 UTCI don't think that Tolkien really gets a pass considering he made the dark skinned humans the only one who sided with Sauron, and he made the darker-skinned elf in the Silmarillion evil or something? The association of "white" and "black" with morality is often tangled up in the way societies view skin color, if not necessarily in a racist way--I don't think you can say there's no relation at least.
