500 patrons! Time for an exclusive video!

Thank you all for the support!!

As a perk for being one of my first 500 patrons (now 506), you get to choose the topic for an exclusive video that will only be available here on Patreon.

Here's how the process will work:

1. Suggest video topics in the comments below. If you see your idea, please reply to that comment with a "+1" so I know it's a popular idea.

2. After one week, I will go through the comments and pick out videos I feel confident I could make reasonably quickly. I will then do a poll with about 5 choices for you all to pick the video I will make.

Clear skies, and thanks again, Nico

+1 Congratulations Nico. I would love to see this topic as a new video, going into the detail of lenses and chromatic aberration avoidance.

I like this idea as well, I would love to see a video really pushing a more basic setup to the limit, and what the limiting factors really are. I am new to astrophotography and so far I have really been surprising myself with what I can get out of my mirrorless camera and telephoto lens. Im glad I found this community and didnt take the advice of other astrophotography forums which had me convinced I needed to drop 2k on a specialized setup to even have a chance at capturing something good.

Anthony Tucciarone

Congrats Nico. I have been out of astrophotography for a few years and want to start again. But, I don't want to use a laptop in the field. Perhaps you can discuss the options of what equipment would be needed (ASIAir Plus). Also what type of battery device would be needed and the connections to the mount, camera, etc.

Hope nobody minds if a chime in here. My experience with a 2x on an EF300mm f4l is that the additional physical length and focal length make it virtually impossible (or at the very least, impractical) to get stars into focus. It also appeared to me that what was natively tolerable chromatic aberration of the lens was exacerbated. It was ok for the moon. I like the 2x for day photography, but if I was only using it exclusively for astrophotography, I would save the money for a refractor of comparable focal length.

Ian

Congratulations! This is well deserved!!! I would love to see a video that explained in depth what it is possible to achieve using a DLSR and a telephoto lens. And what it is impossible (or very difficult) to achieve, thus why using a telescope or a specialized camera would be be better. Is it possible to use X1.4 or X2 teleconverter on 400 or 600mm lens for astrophotography? :)

No suprise with the growing number of followers and I'm willing to bet there are more to follow - congrat's. Thanks for inviting us to suggest a topic. In line with few others, I'd also be interested in Mosaic planning, capturing, and processing albeit that is a rather large request. As a beginner, how accurate can I expect the go-to mount to be, or is there a better way to manually position? How can I validate my positioning to planning on the fly? Your workflow for calibrating, seaming and processing to ensure good blending and alignment would of course be a treat.

Congratulations Nico. I would like to see a video of you explaining in detail how you planed and processed your W61 Wide Field Mosaic. Highlights, challenges, missteps etc.

I liked your video on imaging planets with your Newt and DSLR. I'd like to see more of this with additional integration (using a stable mount/motorized alt/az)

Congratulations. To celebrate I upped my contribution. How about installing a motor for the barn door mount you made. Or something on svbony sv305 type camera. I just discover this type of camera exits. Are they any good?

+1 Besides comparing the targets based on focal length I would also love to see a conclusion of which focal lengths are the most useful / best allrounder.

Robin Helbig

Congratulations, Nico!! This milestone is certainly well-deserved and all this support speaks to how useful your videos and tutorial are. Keep up the great work! I'd love to see an updated post on using higher focal lengths for deep sky astrophotography, e.g., what focal lengths are most suitable for your camera sensor and why, how to evaluate longer focal length lenses/telescopes based on the general tracker/guiding being used, the most critical factors to consider when looking at lenses/telescopes for photographing DSOs, prime vs. zoom lenses for 2022, cost/benefit of purchasing more economical lenses, e.g., from Sigma, Tamron, etc. What I can find is really a little bit older and I don't see any newer posts/videos.

what about a video on how to process dark nebula and cosmic dust (e.g., shark nebula)

I would just love a video on competitions and earning a Picture of the Day award. What rules, guidelines and tips for submitting an image for awards. 😁

I think it would be great to see an off topic video since you put so much time and effort into helping us out with tutorials!

+1 pros and cons of DSLR vs dedicated CMOS. When to make the jump from the first to second.

Ioannis Ioannou

Hi Nico, I'd like to see a tutorial on Plate Solving with NINA. It would help with the group project.

+1 This for sure! trying to figure out what I should shoot on my dslr seems like such a hard decision and now I've just shot the same thing 10 times plus random things that just don't turn out.

congratulations! a video on targets to image based on focal length and if you need a dslr, astro modded dslr, or designated astro camera with or without filters.

Hi Nico, Congratulations on 500+ it's well deserved...such an inspiration to so many of us. Thank you so much for your excellent videos and advice. How about a video on back focus for noobs that outlines what it is, why it’s important, comments on “how precise should it be”, shows how to work out which numbers matter from all the info available online, and then the practical steps on the telescope / flattener etc.. especially when using extra elements such as filter wheels and so on. ZWO / William Optics info as a potential template, perhaps? Finally, the practical steps involved in obtaining the initial, first-light focus

Congrats! I would love to see a video on false color pallets with OSC data using the free, non-pixinsight stacking programs + photoshop.
