4 Levels of Orion

Just a quick video I made this weekend for fun. A bit different from my usual stuff, but I enjoyed making it with my girlfriend.

Hope everyone's week is off to a good start!

4 Levels of Orion

That was very cool

Jeff Ratino

Good afternoon Nico! Great fan of your content and especially this video. Killer editing and cinematography. I just recently have gotten into Astrophotography and have been playing around a bit. I have a Sony A6000 camera and my fiancé purchased an Orion 9024 telescope for Christmas with a manual tripod. Moon pictures have been amazing but with a scope of F/10, it’s tough to really gather light from deeper objects in space. Is this telescope something I can still tinker around with and hopefully be successful with the deep space photography? Or mainly planets for now until my budget clears up for a better scope/stand (looking into the Williams Optics Zenithstar 73 and SkyWatcher EQ6R tripod). Thanks again and looking forward to watching more of your content!

Even though I have a very basic mount the quality of my photos just got to level 2 and I excited to master level 3!

Oleksandr Pryimak

At level 2 Working my way up to level 3 just waiting on the tracker after I bought the rokinon 135mm for my canon rebel t7. My plans for the future is to get my DSLR camera Astor modified just wondering if anybody knows where to get it done in Massachusetts if there is, And what’s a good light pollution filter at a reasonable price for a DSLR camera.

Excellent Nico. You convey information so much better than anyone else.

fantastic idea Nico..watched it several times already...youve packed so many tips into such a cool video..the most important point i think is that the same core steps eg flats, are needed as is processing...but like tgat its realistic what to expect with different hardware...looking forward to another one..bravo!

Love this little video Nico. I'm at level 2. A very basic level 2. Definitely need to improve here before investing in a tracker.

James Palmer

Thanks Mike! Let me know if you have any questions about the star tracker, and I can try to help. Clear skies, Nico

Nico Carver

Nice, thank you! I'll definitely try to grab a lot more data @ 1 minute exposures next time I have a clear night (which might be a while lol).

Ryan Nack

Definitely Ryan. I think people over-estimate the need to get long exposures. 2 hours of 1 minute exposures will be tons better than 1 hour of 5 minute exposures assuming the sky condition and everything else is the same. So if you got it dialed in to get consistent 1 minute exposures go for that. The Orion I show at level 3 was just 30s exposures (https://www.astrobin.com/awjczz/). When I use a star tracker, I typically do 30, 60 or 90s exposures. That's not to say trying to optimize your tracker is useless, just that 1 minute is fine for being way over the noise floor of the camera, so all you should need to do is stack a ton (hours worth preferably) to have a clean photo.

Nico Carver

I'm on level 2.5 lol. I have an iOptron Sky Guider Pro and have only been able to get 1 minute exposures without tracking issues so far. My main question is, would I be able to get decent signal adding a lot more lights to my stack at 1 minute exposure time, vs. trying to optimize my tracker and getting longer exposures? (let's say given the same total exposure time)

Ryan Nack

Hi Nico! Wonderful little movie and greatly appreciated you quick synopsis of how each level was done and the side by side comparison at the end. I have been watching your videos and have accomplished level 2 with your help of the Orion Nebula. Looking forward to moving to level 3 when I learn how to run my star tracker. Thanks again for your wonderful videos!
