First filters video up!

Hey everyone! A few months back, you all chose the topic of my next video by popular vote in a poll. The winning topic was 'affordable filters for DSLR deep sky astrophotography'. I had so much to say that I struggled to make this in to one video, and decided it should be a series. So, here is the first video in what will be an ongoing series on 'filters for DSLR astrophotography'. This is an intro and my attempt to answer the questions I get the most often. After I answer some basic question I go into more depth about how digital one shot color cameras work, and more thoughts on filters for them. The video is currently 'unlisted' and available exclusively on Patreon until Monday when I will publish it for everyone else.

The next video in the series which is 75% complete is a shootout/review of four light pollution filters: Svbony CLS, Astronomik CLS, Optolong L-Pro, and Baader Neodymium. Spoilers: my overall favorite for value, performance, and utility was the Baader, and my least favorite was the Astronomik. The Svbony is the best value, and the L-Pro is really just as good as the Baader, just more expensive. (Some might still want to go with the L-Pro since it is available as a clip-in filter, while the Baader is not).

I am also attaching two pdfs: a summary and a glossary of terms. These go with the video above.

Hi Christopher, I've been pretty amazed at these modern dual narrowband filters on a DSLR, like the Optolong L-eNhance or L-eXtreme, OPT Radian, etc. At least for nebulae they are pretty great. For broadband stuff, there is really nothing better than more integration and practice with processing. Feel free to send me some of your work, and I may have more tips: nicocarver at gmail dot com.

I am a brand new Patreon to your channel. I am just starting astrophotography but have several telescopes I have use optically including a 10" Newtonian my wife made 25 years ago. I have always wanted to do astrophotography and now have the time and some money to do it. I am putting together a DSLR guided setup and have an 20 year old Meade 8" SCT with Autostar. But I live in Bortle 9 and have a huge LED street light in my front yard making front yard almost useless even though it has a huge view of the sky. I have tried several basic photo sessions in my backyard with my DSLR rig and I am very disappointed. While I am tweaking my polar alignment and tracking, the image after stacking is either to dark or washed out due to light pollution. I am questioning if I can be successful living where I do. I was hoping filters my be the best solution but after watching this video, I am questioning that. Any advice?

Glad it was helpful Michael! Sounds like you took away the right message 😏

Really great video. Very informative. It’ll help my decision on which filter to buy. Won’t make my vendor happy though, ‘cause I was about to buy way too many filters, which I probably don’t need at my stage of astrophotography. 😂

Thanks Don! Yes, that L-eNhance is a great choice for the price. I'd like to compare it to some of the other dual narrowband filters, but I'll have to raise some funds first. Haven't had much luck getting loaners from the companies.

Very in-depth review Nico, great job! I'm using my Optolong L-enhance and I love it. Looking forward to your next video! Thanks!
