Introducing my RoboTortoise design!  This Robot Tortoise is a fun Sci-Fi twist on my original tortoise design.  Last year, I made the RoboLotl to commemorate my first anniversary of my STL design journey.  I thought that would be a fun theme to carry forward in celebration of my 2nd Anniversary! This was so much fun to design.  I love diving into the details like the pistons and shocks, the solar panels, and of course the jet engines (this slow-poke needs all the help he can get)! I really hope you like it!!

Like the standard Tortoise model, it's fully print-in-place.  You just have to crack the head free. To help him stand, there are small ball and socket joints on the ends of the legs. Just pull the legs out as far as you can, and they should snap into the position that will allow them to support it's weight. Then pop them back in to let him hide back in his shell. (The first few times might take some extra effort, but they should break-in nicely)

Here is a demo video of the model!

Cheers!
Matt

Pictured Prints use the following filaments***
(reference the numbered prints in last image of the gallery)

1) Eryone Matte Aqua Blue, Overture Orange PLA+, Ziro Silky Silver, Eryone Matte Black
2) Polymaker Starlight Comet
3) Cookiecad Silk Granite (Silver/Black dual extrusion)
4) PolyTerra Pastel Rainbow
5) PrintBed Nacho Cheese, Overture Chocolate PLA+, Ziro Silk Silver Grey, Eryone Matte Black

3D Print information:

Pulling the legs out fully allows them to pop into sockets. That creates enough tension to make him stand up.  It may be difficult the first few times, but once it wears-in, it should work with light effort.  The head has built in pre-supports, just twist the head after printing to crack the joint free.

This should generally scale down to about 60% with full articulation, on a well calibrated printer.  Your mileage may vary.

Oh yeah it’s a little tough you just have to wiggle it and find the right place to lock the legs

Never mind I found out that if I open the 3mf the speed is modified

I put the stl in the slicer and it says it’s going to take a day is that normal?

MateoF

Does anyone have an issue with the legs staying locked in place so that it can stand upright?

When I first saw this, I thought.... that's not really my thing. But the more I look at it the more in love I become. The attention to detail is incredible, zooming in and looking at every tiny little thing is amazing. It's truly a work of art. Frikkin brilliant

This is why every time I go through the people I subscribe to to try and thin the herd a bit, your's is one of the very few I can't go without. Incredible!

Haven’t tested, but I imagine the only limit is your print bed! The only caveat I can think of is that it may be a little harder to crack the head free, and initially set the legs into the standing position. In that case a very lite bit of heat from a torch or heat gun should soften it up just enough to make that easier.
