10) Sadly, our waiters are not paid a lot of money. So, they rely on tipping to make ends meet. So, tipping only a little money is considered rude. Like, extremely rude. 11) Wrestling? Watch some wrestling on YouTube sometime! It’s amazing! It’s so much fun! It’s like watching a violent soap opera and some of the stunts they do are pretty spectacular. 12) If you think the US is patriotic, you should see the countries of South America. They are even more patriotic. So, it’s all relative. Also, if you want to hear someone complain about the US, talk to an American. We are the first to complain about anything having to do with our country. But our particular patriotism comes from winning independence from a massive world superpower. It was an extremely unlikely victory, which has spurred on patriotism ever since. Also, the propaganda we created in World War II was so effective and iconic that it echoes up to today, still! The images we created during that time still affects our culture. Finally, America has a long tradition of citizens serving in the military for a long portion of their lives. For example, most adults will have friends that served in the military - some times for a decade or more. When you see what these people go through in the military, even those who don’t see combat, it makes you very grateful for their service and it forms the foundation of a lot of our patriotism.

Usually people who are traveling and experiencing new things may try to take comfort in something familiar, like food, to reduce the over-stimulation of being in a new country. 6) Cheese in a can? I don’t get it either. 7) Americans looooove their cars. We will even watch movies in our cars! Our cars are a symbol of our freedom and we see it as being a symbol of being an adult. Many kids are very excited to get a car, because they see it like a rite of passage.

Howeveeeer…often we will use this to strike up an impromptu conversation. For example, I might say, “I’ve been better, actually.” And I will be able to strike up a small and quick conversation about my feelings. Just yesterday, I was greeted by a very bright and friendly cashier, who asked how I was doing, and I responded, “You’re so happy and positive, my day is much better now, thank you.” So, it can sometimes be a conversation starter.
