Watching this just reminded me that the Falklands War kicked off just the following year after this episode aired! Even though it was one of the shortest wars that there’s been, still as horrific as the rest. I watched a documentary about it 2 years ago, from the soldiers POV. Mainly because outside of Wikipedia, I don’t recall ever really hearing all that much about it in full detail. Very interesting! Though of course disturbing to hear about their personal experiences, and great deal of sadness to see the state that it had left them in, mentally and physically. Apologies if this sounds naive, war isn’t one of my usual conversation topics. Don’t know if it interests you at all Meg, but it’s called “Our Falklands War: A Frontline Story” available on iplayer for 2 more months.

2023-08-02 21:38:24 +0000 UTCGrandad’s speech about the First World War is so moving! John Sullivan (the writer of Only Fools) must have been inspired by the WW1 war poets when writing this. In particular Siegfried Sassoon, who would write about his distain at how the troops were welcomed back as heroes, when in fact they just felt like they were pawns in a pointless war, and soon forgotten about. (And so the cycle repeats!)
