“That’s fine,” Captain Marvel said. He fidgeted, dragging his toes across the phone booth floor.

It wasn’t very fine. It was really sad. He tried not to sound too glum.

“I really am sorry,” Aiko’s Mom said on the other end of the phone. She sounded a lot like Aiko. “But Aiko has really important stuff to do, so it’s unavoidable.” She even talked like Aiko, with a mix of adult words and childish words. Billy hid a faint smile in his hand. “Next week. Buh bye.”

“Bye bye,” Billy echoed. He hung up and tried not to feel disappointed. It had been nice to patrol with someone else. He liked being a mentor. Aiko was really little. Even if she knew he was just twelve, he would seem really grown up to her. He felt sort of… proud that the Justice League wanted him to keep her on the right path. Billy took a deep breath. It would be fine without her for a week. She wouldn’t like, catapult off the heroic path or that forget he existed or anything.

He went out on patrol that night. Nothing happened. Nothing happened the next night, either. But the third night, he was looking into the weird disappearance of Doctor Sivana. He hadn’t reported to work.

“His wife could be in on it,” Billy muttered to himself as he flew over the city. She had reported him missing, but it could just be part of some evil plan. The Doctor’s whole family occasionally participated in his schemes.

He checked in with his contacts around Fawcett, homeless kids and informants. Nothing! Nobody knew anything.
