Thorium research lost the race to uranium and was forever underfunded since it could not be used for military purposes (or at least at that time it was considered not) this actually what would made is safer in electricity production (as far as my understanding on the thorium reaction chain goes). As for now the timeline for thorium adoption is somewhere in the future where we already use like 90%+ renewables and is somewhat obsolate. At this rate we might develop superconductors (and solve energy distribution without efficiency loss) sooner.
