Clowning Interview for a Book

Another surprising lockdown activity! I've been asked to give an interview and some images for a book about clowning! That was really flattering, to be seen as an authority in your field. Not sure when it will come out but you can read the whole thing below.

1. You as the godmother / inventor of the clown slam in the UFA factory - how did the idea come about? Who was it - who were the obstetricians? 

 I had the wonderful experience of doing the Berlin Puppetry Slam all over Germany when I arrived and was producing poetry slams in Australia. I've noticed that slams are a great way to showcase non-mainstream art forms because the audience can get involved and see many different types of performers. I thought this was a great thing for clowns!  Without the enormous support of the wonderful people from ufaFabrik - Internationales Kultur Centrum and also the Puppetry Slam Germany, this would absolutely not have been possible. Another key person was the great MJ Dazzle who was a great partner and Jenelle Weidlich who helped from the start. And of course all the clowns and the audience who came and took a chance on the show, especially in the early days.  

2. I know there were a lot of good clowns in your shows. Which ones came out best with the audience?  

There are two things the audience loves. First, the clown has to have a good relationship with the audience. Whether they are friendly, grumpy, sad, or happy, they need to get the audience on their team. Second, the clown must have something real, innocent, or real that the audience can recognize from their own life. Then the magic happens.  

3. Which ones did you like best?

For me, variety is the most important thing. My favorite shows are those with clowns of different ages, genders, nationalities and styles.  

4. What are your own projects?  

I hope we can go back to live shows in Germany. Then I would like to continue my monthly shows; the clown slam, my stand-up shows and my drag king show, the Richard P Dick Van Johnson show. I would also like to tour my solo show Girls! Girls! Girls!  While we're waiting, I'll be shooting a few episodes of a web series with my bum dog and taking photos for Merkins Annual, a magazine devoted to the latest fashion in pubic wigs. I will also be doing more music for my band project Mystery Fun Club.  

5. Which people are your role models?  

I have a lot of influences from different areas. Modern mainstream examples include the Broad City comedy duo and outrageous character actors like Sacha Baron Cohen. From the past, I adore Josephine Baker for perfectly crossing the line between glamor, serious politics and clown and physical actors like Chaplin and Keaton.  

6. What are the possible qualities of a clown?  

You have to have some kind of "reality". The audience needs to see something in the clown that they recognize or understand from their own life. After all, life itself is ridiculous and the clown reflects that. This is also the essence of where the humor comes from.  

7. How do you deal with stage fright?     

You have to let go of the feeling of shame. Decide that you should remove this on stage for a short time in your life and be free. Be shameless. Good sample helps too!

1. Du als Patin / Erfinderin des Clown Slam in der UFA Fabrik - wie wurde die Idee geboren? Wer hat dazu gehört - wer waren die Geburtshelfer * innen?

Ich hatte die wundervolle Erfahrung, mit dem Berlin Puppetry Slam in ganz Deutschland aufzutreten, als ich ankam und in Australien Poetry Slams produzierte. Mir ist aufgefallen, dass Slams eine großartige Möglichkeit sind, nicht zum Mainstream gehörende Kunstformen zu präsentieren, da das Publikum sich einbringen und viele verschiedene Arten von Darstellern sehen kann. Ich dachte, das wäre eine großartige Sache für Clowns!

Ohne die enorme Unterstützung der wunderbaren Menschen von ufaFabrik - Internationales Kultur Centrum und auch des Puppetry Slam Deutschland wäre das absolut nicht möglich gewesen. Eine weitere Schlüsselperson war der großartige MJ Dazzle, der ein großartiger Partner war, und Jenelle Weidlich, die von Anfang an half. Und natürlich all die Clowns und das Publikum, die gekommen sind und eine Chance in der Show ergriffen haben, besonders in den frühen Tagen.

2. Ich weiss, es waren viele gute Clowns in deinen Shows. Welche kamen beim Publikum am besten

Es gibt zwei Dinge, die das Publikum liebt. Erstens muss der Clown ein gutes Verhältnis zum Publikum haben. Ob sie freundlich, mürrisch, traurig oder fröhlich sind, sie müssen das Publikum in ihr Team holen. Zweitens muss der Clown etwas Echtes, Unschuldiges oder Reales haben, das das Publikum aus seinem eigenen Leben erkennt. Dann passiert die Magie.

3. Welche haben dir am besten gefalle

Für mich ist Abwechslung das Wichtigste. Meine Lieblingsshows sind solche mit Clowns unterschiedlichen Alters, Geschlechts, Nationalität und Stil.

4. Welche sind deine eigenen Projekte?

Ich hoffe, dass wir zu Live-Shows in Deutschland zurückkehren können. Dann würde ich gerne meine monatlichen Shows fortsetzen; der Clown Slam, meine Stand-up-Shows und meine Drag-King-Show, die Richard P Dick Van Johnson-Show. Ich würde auch gerne meine Einzelausstellung Girls! Girls! Girls! touren!

Während wir darauf warten, werde ich mit meinem Popohund einige Folgen einer Web-Serie drehen und Fotos für Merkins Annual schießen, eine Zeitschrift, die sich der neuesten Mode in Schamperücken widmet. Ich werde auch mehr Musik für mein Bandprojekt Mystery Fun Club machen.

5. Welche Menschen sind deine Vorbilder?

Ich habe viele Einflüsse aus verschiedenen Bereichen. Moderne Mainstream-Beispiele sind das Comedy-Duo in Broad City und empörende Charakterdarsteller wie Sacha Baron Cohen. Aus der Vergangenheit verehre ich Josephine Baker dafür, dass sie die Grenze zwischen Glamour, ernsthafter Politik und Clown und physischen Schauspielern wie Chaplin und Keaton perfekt überschritten hat.

6. Welche möglichen Eigenschaften hat ein Clown?

Sie müssen eine Art „Realität“ haben. Das Publikum muss etwas im Clown sehen, das es aus seinem eigenen Leben erkennt oder versteht. Schließlich ist das Leben selbst lächerlich, und der Clown spiegelt dies wider. Dies ist auch die Essenz dessen, woher der Humor kommt.

7. Wie gehst du mit Lampenfieber um?

Sie müssen das Gefühl der Schande loslassen. Entscheide, dass du das für eine kurze Zeit in deinem Leben auf der Bühne entfernen und frei sein sollst. Schamlos sein. Gute Probe hilft auch!
