episode one costume reference sheets

For episode one, I thought of the colors pink and blue representing the character's emotions. Pink represents embracing the female's role in society, a willingness to perform in the customs of marriage and conformity of the time. Blue is Giselle's desire for freedom, a sky blue that reflects her innocence as well as her longing for independence. Dai Lu wears both colors in a darker, more mature shade, showing her attempt to keep her family united and embrace her daughters' differences but also guide (control) them.
also we can see from this early art that Giselle was almost named Isabelle :^)
