After Dark: Movie Re-Releases, Downloading Books, Modern Character Actors, Streaming Apps

The Filmcast: After Dark is the bonus show where we talk about a variety of random topics that didn't make it into the main podcast - including your questions and what's going on in our lives.

In this chaotic episode, David, Devindra, and Jeff discuss which movies they'd like to see in theaters this year, what it's like to download books for your Kindle, and their favorite modern character actors.

I did listen that’s why I’m commenting haha

My favorite modern character actors are Harold Perrineau, Mark Shepherd, and Nicole Beharie.

Amanda

They’re both terrible but Clones doesn’t have Jake Lloyd and has less Jar Jar.

Peter Tribe

Favorite modern character actor - Walton Goggins. Not necessarily young per the conversation, but he feels modern/of this time.

Stephen Shaffer

oooh, brilliant!

Joy o Napping

One of the all-time great rants by Jeff! The man is unstoppable once he gets going…

I keep a Letterboxd list of films I wish to see in a theater but have never had the chance. It’s dominated by films with intensely absorbing sound and music. Examples: Under the Skin, The Conversation, Only Lovers Left Alive, and Heat.

TJR

I'm begging you to listen to the conversation they just had about it.

Mathew

Also Phantom is the only interesting one because it's unfiltered Lucas.

Mountain of Conflict

Apple TV remote isn’t that bad right? Or am I too dumb to notice its flaws haha

Calibre is a fantastic ebook library and metadata editor, and may or may not allow for plug-ins that bust DRM. And backing up Dave: my wife and I share a kindle library that is nearing 700 books, and then we have the various humble bundles and other formats of books that we can plug onto our devices with Calibre. Love having a mobile library.

“Please make me angry. You’ll LOVE me when I’m angry!” -Jeff

Reg. Apple remote - it's almost as if they want you to buy their phones and their iMac and everything. (Personally, I opted out of Apple years ago and am very ok about it. Fwiw, the only thing I had was an iPod and they stopped that so now I'm out)

Here’s a deep cut from an “older”: One of my cherished movie-going experiences was seeing Hitchcock’s ‘Dial M for Murder’ in 3D on the big screen, which is the format in which it was originally shot. This was at a revival house in NYC in the 1980’s, back when there were plenty such venues around the city. Seeing this 3D version was revelatory, and the scene with the central murder in the film (Grace Kelly stabbing a menacing intruder with a scissors) was riveting and scary as hell. Seeing the film in a non-3D format is wildly different; it comes across as staid and stage-bound by comparison (it’s based on a play by Frederic Knott), and the shots seem weirdly framed. I pine to experience the original 3D version again, but I’ve never seen it pop up anywhere since that one viewing. This was a hugely entertaining episode, guys. (Furious, raging Jeff is possibly my favorite Jeff.) Thank you!

David Chen: Will risk not seeing a once in a lifetime Hans Zimmer concert by waiting until the last minute to buy tickets instead of when they go on sale, because he's cheap. Also David Chen: Will spend hundreds of dollars on books on Amazon Kindle that he has never read and will likely never read. lol

For the character actor conversation, I think a big part of it too is that's sort of the nature of their job. The movie about character actors is even called "That Guy... Who Was in That Thing".Like, they play bit parts here and we really only notice them after years of roles or they break out enough that they can't really be considered character actors anymore (like JK Simmons or Christopher Walken).

Efren Flores

I was able to see Pulp Fiction last year at the New Beverly for its 30th anniversary rerelease, and it was a packed house as would be expected, but it was a great experience - as soon as the opening credits started and Misirlou kicked on, people started applauding.

Rob

That anyone would like them is 🤣

Reynaldo K. Cruz

Excellent material gentlemen! Thank you!

Reynaldo K. Cruz

FWIW, I have issues with the Max app. The aspect ratio is frequently off or a movie won't load at all

Cindy McIntyre

I was so lucky to see the Nolan supervised IMAX edition of 2001 Space Odyssey in True IMAX. And it was only last summer when I finally saw Lawrence of Arabia on 70mm at Museum of the Moving Image in Queens NYC. So good!

Alec Rodriguez

Dev likes attack of the clones more than Phantom 🤣

Roshar Space Fleet

Much appreciate the heads up for the upcoming theater re-releases. There have been many times the gang had mentioned seeing something in theaters after the fact that I would have loved to have gone to. Hopefully it'll be a more frequent thing, cause I'll definitely be looking out for Purple Rain now.
