You Will Need (comic in progress)

Remember that time I decided to make a simple six panel comic explaining how to replace your boot zipper and then I was like "Let's make this take one million times longer by illustrating it with collage'd paper and fabric"? There's no need to remember it like it's in the past because, baby, IT'S STILL HAPPENING. With the art for the first panel done, it's time to tackle Panel Two!

Here's my sketch:

My original idea was to make the cursive title and curlicue border out of wire so that it would really pop off the page, but that turned out...

Ahem.

So then I got out some black embroidery floss ("Thread" is called "floss" when it's for embroidery, for some inexplicable reason. I'm sure Google knows why but I refuse to look it up because somebody's bound to tell me anyway and I happen to value human interaction, thankyouverymuch), coated it in glue, and then sculpted it into my desired border design.

It turned out...

.............................better.

Look, if you compare it to my first try with the wire, it is indisputably better.

Fortunately, I had been sharing my progress on this project in that weird "Community" chat-thing that Patreon only offers in the app and some incredibly insightful people suggested I try actually embroidering the embroidery floss (thread) to spell out my panel border and it was like... Oh. Right. That would probably 1) be easier and 2) look better.

And it was and it did.

With the border in place, I then went about making all the little listed supplies out of paper cutouts. The black pieces really popped against the soft off-white fabric background, but I realized that the silver and light-colored paper pieces were getting lost in it.

Then I realized, "Oh, I can just cut out black silhouettes to go behind the light-colored pieces!" and that solved that problem-o.

Just like with the first boot panel, I'm going to do the rest of the text on a separate piece of paper and combine them digitally. For the moment, though, I'd say this piece is done!
