ART: The Making of Consentacles

Remember that baller Consentacles and Consenticles faux-Ancient-Greece disk painting-thing I did for my friend, Clare?

Clare requested illustrations of two characters: Consentacles and Consenticles, deities who provided consensual tentacle and testicle touching, respectively. Originally, I had pictured this as two separate pictures, one for each character, that could work as a whole piece when hung next to each other but could also stand alone.

Consenticles (right) is holding a tray of rounded foods, mostly in pairs, to further emphasis that he is the god of (consensual) testicles.

Matt had some editorial input on the above sketch:

Left note reads: "Noice dick, brah" (and she is now taking a picture with her phone), while right note reads: "Dingus Maximus". If you work at a games/design/publishing studio PLEASE HIRE MY HUSBAND TO ART DIRECT ON YOUR PROJECTS, HE IS VERY GOOD. (I'm actually not kidding about hiring him, DM me if you seriously are looking for a creative director-type person.)

Once I started researching the source material, though, I was very quickly taken by those vase paintings they used to do back then, and how they created this continuous scene that physically traveled around the vase, unspooling its story, until you inevitably found yourself back where you started and commenced the trip again.

So then I smooshed my two separate characters together onto the opposite ends of one disk and filled it up with the adoring followers of each consensually-inclined god. No matter which side was up, I wanted every orientation to display a full story, from the worshippers' journey to the gods awaiting their worshipful touch.

I recruited Matt to help me figure out the best testicle-emphasizing pose for Consenticles.

This is not even close to the most ridiculous photo reference he has had to do for me.

I sketched out the design in real life, scanned it (in pieces, because it was too big for my scanner), tweaked things digitally, and then printed that back out (in pieces, because it was too big for my printer) which I then taped back together as one whole piece, all so I could then use my lightbox to re-trace the final digital version onto some thick-ass watercolor paper.

So really, I wound up drawing this exact same image, like, multiple times. (Arm-sock and glove in the above picture were to keep my greasy human skin from smoodging into that nice, fancy paper.)

I presented Clare with some coloring options! I wound up doing something slightly different from all of the above, lol.

Then I painted this sumbitch!

Once the paint had dried, I mounted the cut-out painting onto a pre-made circular canvas-thing with a sturdy wooden base:

Aaaaaaaand there it is!

I made that!

It really turned out so cool! I love the almost art nouveau style original drawings (Especially with Matt's additions hahaha) but honestly the circular ancient Greek style is so beautiful and fun. It really did turn out amazing. I'm always a sucker for behind the scenes stuff and this did not disappoint! I love the photos and your awesome lightbox setup, hope your back wasn't too sore afterwards!
