The combat is a big point of contention, but if you want to get through it fast you just need to level up the flight character, they're better at attacking than power. If you're using a power character's attacks don't ever do it on the ground because you slide all over the place and can easily fall off. In the casino levels never switch to another character when you're on the pinball table because you'll lose progress. On the rail canyon levels you gotta switch to the flying character when trying to switch rails because the mechanic is not very reliable and you can fall off easily. There's a lot of jank you just have to overcome to find the fun, but hey that's a lot of 3D Sonics. Also, I love the music in Heroes.
