Consent and non-consent

I had a thought that maybe consent is a modern invention. Like when you read old fairy tales and such, there is no such thing. Only kings and sometimes heroes get to do other than what the universe chooses for them... otherwise it's just what happens to you. When did we invent the idea that consent for regular people is something that we should expect? Or deserve? Or is a human right?
