You did ruin the story. Shameless plot device or not, it's weird to double down on it and ignore what everyone else says because 'this is what I chose to do.' I mean, are you writing fanfiction to make money or to improve as a writer? If it's the first, well, good for you I guess but if it's for the second maybe don't do things you know the readers will hate? Just an odd choice and an odd argument and there were surely. much better routes you could have taken. One that the readers would actually like, y'know.
