A 1.14 Sneak Preview

Hello!

I want to say thank you in response to a very supportive first month since going full-time by dropping a peek at what the next content update will be focused around. Now that 1.13 is mostly wrapped up, I'm now focusing on putting together the feature you've all been waiting for...

Game Edition Combining!

You heard it here first! With this update you'll be able to track which edition of game you've played in the same log as the parent, instead of having to track it as a separate game entirely. This will also bring all stats for a game and its editions together to better represent the number of plays / ratings / reviews it has. Don't worry, I'm also planning on providing options to filter ratings / reviews if you want to check a specific edition.

Game editions will still have their own page on the site, can be added to lists as a separate entry, liked, favorited, etc... as it is now. The main difference will be that you'll log the game under the parent instead, as the log editor will open up to the parent game with the edition selected instead of being its own.

At the start this will focus on bringing game versions together as that seems to be the easiest category to automate. Here are some examples of games that would be considered an edition:

Next would be bundles, where a bundle game becomes an edition for any game in its bundle. For example Sonic X Shadow Generations would be a selectable edition under both Sonic Generations and Shadow Generations.

I'm still deciding on how to approach Remasters as I think they are more on a case-by-case basis whether if a remaster should be considered its own game or not.

I'm mostly still in the planning phase so there's a lot of nuances to figure out in terms of how this will affect the rest of the site, so please share any feedback or wishes for how you'd like to see this feature implemented!

Hope to share more soon!

Best,

MrProg

When logging, there won't be customization as it'll have to be applied site-wide on what's an "edition" or not. A difficult problem of its own. But when viewing a game's page, rating, reviews, and your profile Im hoping to have options that let you either see them all as the parent or as separate games (like it is now).

MrProg

Great stuff! I am a big fan of customisation - is the merging something which could be turned on/off via settings? For example merge remakes yes/no, merge remaster yes/no, merge all dlcs into main game yes/no, etc.

Eatz

Still deciding on that front! But Im trying to find a way to do automatically without disrupting too much

MrProg

PEAK. Will this automatically add existing logs and reviews to the parent game or will that have to be done manually?

tranquilghost

Yeah remakes will be need to be handled a bit more selectively, exploring ways to automate it but I think there'll need a way to make exceptions either way.

MrProg

This is peak, thank you. Always hoped there would be a way to reduce the entry bloat on the website.

Swirly Twirl

Nice! As far as remasters go, I think what separates what makes one its own game is best shown by the recent release of Silent Hill 2. Konami, depending on the source, had an incomplete source code for the HD remaster. This is why Silent Hill 2 was totally remade from scratch last year.

R.J. Stanford

This is my most awaited feature!

Celeste

will this also combine MMORPGs and their expansions? like WoW, FFXIV, GW2 that do have several editions for each expansion pack

MunArisu

very cool change! having so many editions as different games can look overwhelming, so this is great :)

DinosaurCursive

Thank you so much! This has been one of the last things I missed on the site. Now, only an official app with a design close to Letterboxd is my dream.

Berny23

Great addition! Maybe this is too complex, or what you were already thinking with your "case by case basis" comment, but I personally see remasters as another edition of the base game, unless they add or change core aspects of the gameplay which is uncommon in remasters. Remakes should definitely be their own game listing. I'm also looking forward to that bundle feature, especially as we are getting a lot of bundled rereleases now like the Castlevania and Mega Man collections. That will be really beneficial f you want to purchase one of those games but don't already know it's featured in a collection. Fantastic job, as always. Super excited for you being able to do this full time now.

I really like this idea but I have a question about it. To what game would Skyrim Anniversary Edition belong to? Would it be Skyrim Special Edition or the original Skyrim?

Expakun

Great stuff! Thank you for your hard work making such a brilliant site 🍻

KlawPeels

This is incredible! Super curious to see how this will affect some game scores

Tobias James

I am very happy with this! I am a fairly new subscriber, and this was probably the most disappointing aspect of the website to me, so this is HUGE. Keep up the good work!

Tyler Kaminski

Awesome! Would this affect the first three Metal Gear Solid games and their expanded reissues? That’s been top of mind for me since I’m playing through them atm

alec_irl

Seasons are a good idea to look into! I think they would fit well just as another log under the main game, especially to sync up days played / time tracking.

MrProg

i love this! i was logging some bundles just today and was thinking about this feature, that is awesome.

EldenMike

Awesome! Looking forward to it :D My hope is that this naturally gets extended to live service games and their "seasons" which is tricky. I've done it three different ways on my profile: Just track played days under the new season, and move into the different season as soon as its available. I've done that, in tandem with also marking played days under the parent. And then I've done it where I just mark it under the parent, but in a log that is the title of the season. Those are all a bit clunky, but I can see how it could benefit from a natural extension of this feature so I'm stoked about that :) Keep up the good work!

Looks fantastic!
