Development Status Update

Dear Patrons,

I'm thrilled to bring you the latest updates on our journey with PlayPhrase.me.

This past month has been a whirlwind of activity, with numerous website optimizations thanks to your invaluable feedback. Your bug reports have led to significant improvements in both the UI and server logic. Plus, I've made great strides in enhancing the search mechanism, making it not only faster but also richer with upcoming new features.

Here's where my focus lies currently:

Expanding My Content Library: I'm actively adding a bunch of new movies and TV shows to our repertoire. The integration of new films is well underway, and I'm particularly excited to announce that I'm introducing TV series to our platform, a feature many of you have eagerly awaited. My ambitious goal is to add 10 million phrases from English TV series, along with 1 to 1.5 million phrases for each additional language. This expansion is set to at least double our database size. I'm not just stopping at modern English-language films; I'm diving into the classics too, going beyond the 1970s to bring you a richer, more varied collection. Prioritizing fresh, relevant content remains at the heart of my mission.

Innovating Search Tools: As hinted at previously, I'm crafting new search functionalities that allow for more granular queries by genres, years, movies, and more. An additional, specialized panel is in the works, enabling you to fine-tune your searches with extra parameters. A forthcoming feature will let you search for specific sounds within scenes, like the patter of rain or the echo of a gunshot. Moreover, I'm exploring AI technology to revolutionize how you search for objects in movies, imagine locating a red car amidst an explosive backdrop.

Supporting Language Learners: A new feature is on the horizon for those of you using PlayPhrase.me to learn languages. You'll soon be able to play common phrases in the background, seamlessly transitioning from one to the next—perfect for immersion learning while on the go or before bedtime. I'm adding audio translations to enhance comprehension. Additionally, I'm developing a dedicated mobile app to bring this functionality to your fingertips, although it will also be available on our website.

Your support fuels this journey, enabling me to bring these innovations to life. As I pour all my energy into this project, you can look forward to new features rolling out more frequently.

Thank you for standing with me. Your enthusiasm and backing make all the difference.

I believe I found an error in the database. When I search for "attenuating" I get a clip from Star Trek: Generations, but the clip references Under Suspicion (2000) instead.

Any news on the planned updates? I'm especially looking forward to a larger database with perhaps more older movies. I have the impression that English dialogue was richer in vocabulary in the past.

I think the clip length is determined by the subtitle file automatically

and please add speed tool and videos shouldn't automatically pass .Thankk you

Teacher

Hello, thanks for generating such a useful website but can you please make duration of videos with the phrase a bit longer so that students can do shadowing to improve speaking skill

Teacher

Thanks. It’s good news. We appreciate your work 👍

The mobile app has been an experimental venture, and as of yet, I've not been able to integrate Patreon login functionality. It has been operating without any subscription model, which unfairly disadvantages our website users. Each update to the mobile app has also involved a daunting moderation process with Apple. Originally, I considered shutting down the app to conserve resources. However, I was convinced to keep it running by users who favor the app over the website. Currently, the app is down because I overhauled my hosting, creating regional mirrors in Asia, Europe, Australia, and the USA. This new setup necessitates significant app modifications. As you may know, updating an app on the App Store is complex, requiring direct interaction with Apple moderators. Moreover, the viable path to maintaining the app is to transition to an Apple Store subscription model, since Apple opposes alternative subscription methods and threatens App Store bans. Please bear with us until the end of next week, by which time I hope to launch a new build incorporating these updates. In the meantime, I recommend using the mobile website.

With all due respect, Yevgeny, why is subscription price to Playphrase.me was recently changed to $5.00 (from $3.00) considering all the issues with the app? The website version doesn’t look as good as the app, unfortunately. And such an increase looks unfair for your subscribers ):

Evgeny

Anna Danilova

would love to be able to filter by actors/tags

The app on the App Store is currently broken, I am fixing it, and it is going through Apple's moderation.

Evgeny

yes, I am working on a new database that will include tv shows, this database contains about twice as many phrases as the current one (English language) I am also adding series in Spanish right now

Evgeny

As of April 2024, the application Playphraseme stopped working on my iPhone. When I enter a word there, it is just quickly showing the phrases with the black background. Please advise

magenglish

thanks. when will TV shows clips be available? thanks!

Patric

I use this for my esl students! I do wish there were some animated movies as well though...

Katie

It is a great tool! Would be great to be able to search specific titles and see only those related clips. Also, is there any Fight Club in this?

Hoss

Such a great project and SUPER useful when I am in production

Lenny Ibizarre

Thanks SO much for this tool. Is there any way to download the videos with the subtitles embedded? Thanks!

Sent you a DM

Exciting news! Regarding search tools, it would be great to be able to have search settings to avoid sentences that start or end with our search query. I often find myself going through many results until I find one where my search is in the middle of the sentence, because those are often clearer.

Seedlang

awesome!

These are exciting times. I can't wait... I have use this service on my reels.

As a cinema mashup artist, I'm a great fan of PlayPhraseMe. I was wondering if the following is possible: When I search a sentence, is there a way to download or see a list of movie titles that come up? It shows that it has for example 60 results, but can I see those results in a list? Hope to hear from you and keep up the amazing work!

Big fan of this project. When you dial-in some new filters and categories to really get specific in the search it will really take things to the next level. I would like to request, if you can add a male / female speaker filter it would be very helpful too. Thanks for your great work!

Pedro Correa

Love what you're doing man and love this project!

Alex Dethero

Thank you 😊

Gossip Girl moments? Okay, I'll definitely add them.

Evgeny

Thank you very much for the amazing tool! One small suggestion on the library: maybe someday you'll have a chance to add some original Gossip girl moments? I've gone through all the 2000+ "not enough" options to find out that the Cyrus's version is not there, and it's so iconic!)) I know we all have different backgrounds and cultural references, but please consider adding these series, it's a gold mine! :)

Thanks for the great work, Evgeny!
