Podcast 208 - Talking cars with Pet Shop Boys

Richard has met his musical heroes and learnt some surprising things. Also in this episode, Jonny’s JDM nail care kit, Kate Beckinsale’s barn finds, the world’s most ridiculous man, a listener almost gets in a fight because of this podcast, a sports bus, a word for camper van you never hear anymore, troubling news about SAABs for cricketers, Alfa makes a terrible mess of things, why the Tonale is like a mk4 Polo, and we have news about a second weekly Smith and Sniff show.

There's some good laws up there. "Not proven" verdict is a good one, where a judge or jury can believe someone is guilty, but not enough evidence to convict. CMTMB

In 1974 Dormobile acquired the designs of Southampton based coachbuilders 'Strachen' (pronounced Strawn) and this included building the 'walk-thru' van body for the Ford Traaahnsiit, which was also converted to a minibus. Dormobile adapted the Strachen design on other vehicles including the Bedford CF. They built huge numbers of Transits converted into minibuses in the mid 1980s which was hugely lucrative. However as bus operators sought replacement bigger vehicles Dormobile didn't really have any suitable products and collapsed in 1992.

John Hammond

I once owned a Dormobile VW.

This is all extremely fascinating! I had no idea, and am happy to know now. I have a feeling that at a Smith and Sniff party, you’d be the belle of the ball.

Ah.. well in the EU the rules apply for all member states so champagne has to come from errr.. Champagne and it has to be that way all across the EU. If you are not in the EU "all bets are off" as you say unless you get some international court to enforce it. The main reason I know is because my father-in-law worked for the glass company Zeiss in Jena then GDR aka East Germany and there was a Zeiss in West Germany as well and it happened at least once that the Western Germans pilfered a contract from the East Germans because the company in question (In Algeria I think) didn't know the difference. After reunification an international court had to decide what was Zeiss where... Another very boring fact: Scalextric of Hornby is calles SuperSlot in Spain and Spanish Scalextric is called SCX most everywhere else. When Franco was being all dictatorshipey Hornby had a factory in Spain and they kept on producing "Scalextric". When Franco finally didn't wake up an international court had to decide on the Scalextric name... And people say I am no fun at parties..!

Serviceable Pasties, 3 more from them later?

Stephen Voss

On Cornish Pasties outside of their home town. It seems once outside of the UK, all bets are off. I live in Chandler AZ. Richard, I believe you’ve been to Arizona on holiday and your wife is from here. Oddly, you were staying in Gilbert, which is just east of me. There is a local chain of restaurants called the Cornish Pastie Co that started in Tempe. I have had many fantastic visits there, if a bit drunken. The Pasties are serviceable, but I have a feeling it would be like going to British pub fantasy camp if you ever went…on that side of things.

My Wife climbs on our roof to clean our covered patio. She won't let me do it because she reckons the support beams can't handle my weight. For many years my Mom knew what time it was because our then neighbors had a routine by which you could set a clock. 10 AM he cut the grass with the wife following behind picking up clippings and trimming missed blades of grass with a pair of scissors. 10:30 the car was washed (totally illegal in this part of Germany but he didn't care) 11:00 she washed the windows and the window sills 11:30 the smell of Rouladen (beef rolls of meat stuffed with vegetables) wafted from their kitchen In the Fall you could replace mowing with leaf raking, whereby he had a gasoline powered leaf blower that he used to blow all the leaves back into the yard of the neighbor whose trees lost their leaves. And who says life in a small German town is boring?!?!?!

Andy Pinchock

Or.... she could have been stockpiling cars for when she eventually does get pass....!

Andy Pinchock

Along with Dormobile, don't forget Carawagon! Richard's inner Land Rover nerd has been too suppressed or he might've shouted it out. Effectively an upturned wooden boat on the roof of a Land Rover that collapses flat.

Matt Tester

Cheers Jonny, I've just walked into the dentist and guffawed at "nan spent some time in the nets" 😂😂

Hi Johnny and Rich, Having listened to the podcast, It turns out (if a Google search is reliable) that Kate Beckinsale doesn’t have a driving licence, having failed her test several times. I think the Beckinsale barnfind thing might remain an unfulfilled fantasy. I also liked that you referred to the Tonale as the toenail. Exactly as I read it when I glanced a the show notes, very fitting given the conversation about Nissan nail care set. 😂

Jon Parry

I've got some Datsun nail clippers and no follow up anecdote.

Fergus McIver

Up here in the socialist republic of Scotland Building regs say that all upstairs windows must be able to be open through almost 180 degrees so they can be cleaned from inside the house That is the only sensible law we have

The sports coach is the yutong tc9, with the small lightweight body and retaining the engine of a full size coach, having driven through HMS prince of Wales to inverkeithing train station shuttle bus I can confirm it's a flying machine. It's lethal in the wet with commercial spec tyres, don't ask me any more questions

Can we please get Jack Spowart, Scottish Illustrator, to make an illustration of the Eagle Quest? https://www.jackspowart.com No really, that is his name.
