Podcast 200: Live from Glasgow

For their 200th episode (which they completely forgot to mention on the night), Jonny and Richard record in front of an audience in a theatre, basically in Glasgow.

Topics covered include a drum ’n’ bass version of the Taggart theme tune, the trouble with the Tesla yoke, Billy Connolly shirts, people who grip the wheel too hard, dot matrix nonsense, listeners’ coach driver memories, actual information about what Michael McDonald drives, an unusual tractor arrangement, Graeme Hall’s late night animal shows, what Jonny did on his birthday, the classic status of the mk1 Freelander, talking to the late Mike Smith about motorways, an early drone disaster, whether a Rover SD1 is a good wedding car, a brief update on Richard’s disastrous Panda, and what Sean Connery had for dinner every night.

Huge thanks to everyone who came along last Wednesday to hear this episode being recorded. You were an absolutely brilliant audience and we had a great time.

FFS, at the time of recording, everytime Richard said Jackie Stewart, I heard Jackie Bird. The misunderstanding is even funnier now

Upon 2nd listen, I always listen on Patreon and again on a podcast site to keep the numbers up, the Jackie Stewart outro song carries more than a passing resemblance to the brilliant "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by the late Gordon Lightfoot. Intentional or otherwise a nice work.

I've accidently got the only decent Freelander 1! Ignore it's appetite for window regulators and a slightly saggy headlining, it's been totally dependable. Bought as a cheap stop-gap for £1000 4 years ago, on the basis that if there was a big bill it would be thrown away, the bloody thing refuses to go wrong! My wife has now developed an emotional attachment and named it Geoffrey(?).. It's a BMW engined TD4, has done nearly 160k miles and just keeps plodding along.

Re the proclaimers car choice referenced by song surely "Sunshine on Leaf" is the most likely. Failing that if they did indeed have to walk 500 miles and walked 500 more then they probably had a 80's Jaguar.

Rick Bean

So many of those Freelanders were in the Land Rover dealer with engine problems we started calling them Deadlanders

Lucky enough to be there for the recording, genuinely laugh-a-minute, fantastic night. Jonny, thanks for the kind comments about my E39 later in the evening!

Paul Chisholm

I think you have a hit on your hands with the closing song. Just think, a few million Spotify plays will cover that new old Panda engine - just about.

Sean O'Neill

You mentioned Hall and Oates briefly. John Oates raced in IMSA. Pretty handy behind the wheel apparently.

Brendan McAleer

We need a full 12” version of the Jackie Stewart song

Charlie Whitfield

So, when are you strokers gonna come to south Wales?

Chris Mackay

12 minutes in and I've just about wet myself about 4 times.

Jono

Gutted I couldn't be there, I'm at the other end of Scotland and had stuff on. Great Podcast, BTW Rich, you are actually good with the accent, your Ken Bruce is excellent, Jackie Stewart not too bad either.

Graham Dallas

I've never tried the Tesla yoke but not being able to palm it is disappointing, the whole point is to think you're driving K.IT.T. and I'm pretty sure the Hoff used to palm that all the time.

Matt Tester

Talking T.W.A.T.s, there used to be a food shop near where I worked (on Mortimer Street in Central London) called Tossed, presumably just so that they could make the staff wear t-shits with 'Tosser' written on the back, which they absolutely did.

Spartacus Mills

When you said you were recording in Giffnock it was a proper “Wear the fox hat” moment 🦊. But it was a great venue and the show was an absolute blast. Thank you! Hope you come back to do another show in Scotland soon.

Ewan Hepburn

Fantastic night! Was a joy to see you and a pleasure to meet you. Haste ye Back! (Basically in Edinburgh next time?)

Leighton Brown

Excellent night 👍😊

Andrew Barnes

Now I’m worried. My wife buys me Aramis. What does this mean…? 😬

Ant Brown

Why do I still smell of Aramis?
