Podcast 190 - Cheersthanksbye

In the final episode of 2023, Jonny and Richard are together in a hotel room in Coventry to discuss Britain’s swollen waterways, misfire versus leak, why the word ‘damp’ is never used in a positive way, Keith Moon’s transport shenanigans, Senna and Tamiya, top-of-the-range cars with smaller engines, Merc slogans, starting engines with shotgun cartridges, feeling the similarities between old and new cars from the same maker, Defender bums, engines that are taller than the car they’re in, a Carperv fleet round-up, love for the Alfa Giulia, friends with Capris, and very fluttery singers. Also, we sell hats now.

Massive thanks to you, our Patrons, for being the brilliant and devoted listeners that you are. See you in 2024 for more of whatever this is.

Only catching up with this now, but I try and get as many cheersmatethanksmatebye-s in to my customers as possible every day. There's also a bloke that comes in that sounds just like Jonny's Preloood 2.2 guy voice, yeah.

Paul Renowden

I'd say they kinda did with the Commodore/VXR8? (Albeit the smaller Fosters spec 5.0 v8). I did once hatch a plan to LS1/6spd my old GSi3000 as a trackday weapon... but common sense eventually prevailed

Duncan Hamilton

Omegas are a guilty pleasure of mine. They were going to put the LS1 and the ZR1 six speed manual from the Corvette into it and sell it as an M5 competitor but they found during autobahn testing, it kept overheating.

The Allegro EV conversion does have a YouTube channel: Kiwi EV Adventures’

I have an 18 year old VW Passat. On colder mornings it takes 2 passes of the glow plugs to start. I keep thinking that I should get them checked/replaced but as it always starts after the second go, I don’t. I suspect that I may live to regret this at some point. I am also a Reading girl born and bred and had no idea that Senna was living in Tilehurst at the same time as I was living a few streets away! You learn something new every day.

Gill Pile

Excellent as always

Weirdly, when I saw this show's title, I had a minor panic that this might be the end of the line for this podcast....Holiday busywork prevented me from listening for almost 24 hours and every time I glanced at my inbox I suffered a pang of anxiety that this could be the final time your little bit of cheer came my way.. Now that I've listened, I'm relieved to find that is not the case..."Whatever this is" has become a bright spot in my week...Enjoy the Holidays, and see you next year.

In my sixth form, one lad had a gold Capri 2.0S which I think had been had his dad's. Predictably it ended up mangled but not in a carthorse suspension/ tail happy live axle RWD kind of way. Instead a dropped cassette being retrieved lead him to take his eye off the road, when he looked back up he was greeted by a parked Cortina which he duly rear ended killing the Capri and Cortina and damaging a 3rd car in the process.

John Hammond

I'll see your Alpha Gulia and raise you a VW Arteon.

Andrew Armstrong

There is a couple of Element part outs here in the Portland Oregon area.

GUYS GUYS LISTEN! I am a Stellantis Owner! We just bought a Jeep Appendage (I won't say the name cuz that will make Jonny cross)! And I kid you not, it has a drum beat for a turn signal! Will video once we take ownership... Until then HAPPY HOLIDAYS and ungsch, ungsch, ungsch, ungsch, YEAH YEAH....

Thanks for another year of the cast. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year - to you and all the patrons too.

The Volvo C70 (1997-2005) had a 2319cc T5 as the top model, with lesser models using a 2435cc (usually turbocharged). Same can be said for the 850 range and successors, until the R model came along, which always had higher capacity.

Ed Storer

Happy Christmas gents, off to read my copy of boring car trivia 4 that I had to buy myself for christmas

Mike Taylor

I'm a bit like Paul, Richard's neighbour. When I was looking for my 964 (before values sky rocketted) I chose a targa, rather than a coupe, because I wanted that beautiful sweep of a rear screen in my life. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you both and fellow Patrons! 🙂👍

Elliott Levy

Cheers for this year, I always look forward to listening every Monday whilst doing serious roadwork in my Scania. Happy Christmas!

David Nickolls

Unfortunately I am now imagining a 1960s band of the ilk of the Tremeloes or Hollies, having fallen upon harder times and the lure of the pier end circuit, with a '90s Ford Galaxy as opposed to a '60s Galaxie. Probably in that slightly fade-prone metallic green Ford seemed to have recalled all old Galaxys to be repainted in at the point they became tatty. "It's very practical, you can get all the band in it... well, the ones who haven't given up to run a furniture shop in Ilkeston"

Thanks for 52 weeks of dross gentleman, very much appreciated. I hope both you and your families have a brilliant Christmas and New year. Much love.

Happy Christmas and a healthy New Year to you magnificent pair of spunk trumpets.

Loved the show, as always. I end up giggling to myself during most shows. Mercedes engineering peaked at the W140. I’ve got a 1998 S500 LWB and it’s just lovely. Looking to buy a LHD old something for some “continental work” saw a L322 black on black with the V8 Diesel, very tempted, thoughts welcome.

Cheers for a year of talking absolute Bag-For-Life/Slipper content. May Santa Full Suspension No-name Mountain Bike Guy visit you all on the eve of the 24th, and leave a high ABV cider in your stocking from his magical bag of cans.

Please come to Ireland.

Have a nice festive break, on that yuletide of things.

Ollie Horsley

Had two 190E 2.3-16s. Can confirm that they somehow managed to make the Getrag dogleg 5 speed it shared with the E30 M3 a bit syrupy. But, super nerd bit, the really early 85/86 cars had preset tension LSDs (rather than spring tension). According to the MB parts man, you could specify slip and lock rates when buying the thing. Only found this out rebuilding the diff for my early 86 car, and was asked what thickness clutch plates I wanted for it.

Duncan Hamilton

Merry Christmas 🎄 and a Happy New Year, lads. Thanks for the great content all year, have a good one. ♥️

I recall Tommy Byrne said he and Senna both had Alfasud road cars when they were racing for Van Diemen in Formula Ford. Tommy got a flat and took a wheel off Sennas car

Jim Galbraith

OTSOT my new saying, goes well with mither 😏

Andrew Barnes

I've got an exterior carcoon you can use Jonny, if you can secrete it somewhere, it's big and silver but dryness guaranteed! I'm local to you, oh and merry Christmas, thanks for the year of entertainment 👍

Saw a original G today, central Edinburgh. Solid paint, soft top, *nothing* superfluous. Looks like you could take it 1000 miles with no prep. BTW I presume 70s/80s Mercedes engineered the best, most fit for purpose manual gear shifter for taxi drivers and explorers, and if you insisted on a manual in your 190E, that’s what you got.

Jim Galbraith

Yes the Capri was sold as a Mercury in North America until 1978 model year. After that the Capri here was a sister car to a Fox Mustang. I owned an 84 RS 5.0L in the 90s. 🙂

Ed Nicholson

Mery Christmas a very Happy New Year! Thank you for cheering up my Monday morning commute.

Sam Houghton

It's Field Marshall tractors from Britain with the cartridge start. Oh dear, I just realized I have fallen back down my vintage tractor rabbit hole. Have a great break guys and thanks for the hilarity

Anthony Mulligan

Senna's 190E is at Mercedes-Benz World down at Brooklands 👍
