Show notes 184

Hello! Sorry for the lateness of the show notes this week. We were busy ringing laser suppliers ahead of our live show at Stellantis. Anyway, here we are. In pics we have the Granada used in the movie version of the Shergar story (so it might not be accurate) followed by the floating head Honda FR-V pic that always reduced James May to hysterics, and the incredible interior of the Lamborghini Espada VIP by Bertone. Now some links…

Maureen from Driving School smacks her husband’s knee with a Lada door

It’s Probably Me by String

Podcast about Shergar (narrated by Vanilla Ice which Jonny forgot to mention)

Kylie might be having a saucy midlife crisis

I remember an interview on the MTV back in the day where old Mr Diddy/Daddy off of the I’ll be missing you bike crash fame admitted to it being an actual big oops where he was holding back then speeding up to get cool acceleration and action looking shots but as he pinned it to catch up, the camera car decided to break for him to catch up so the gap closed exponentially quicker than he expected resulting in the panic brake front lock up seen in the video. They decided it looked cool as if he was so emotional it had affected his ability to function or some sort of artsy waffle. I believe this sort of accidental pain being kept in videos is quite common. Another example is Pink’s Just like a pill song where she is sat with her back to a huge brawl immediately behind her and one of the extras brawling swings a blind fist out a little too wide walloping Pink in the side of the head visibly causing her some actual real pain! Well worth a watch for it if you have never noticed it

Craig Stoker

Great episode. On the subject of mispronouncing car names from their badge. My wife used to refer to Toyota RAV4s as Toyota RAVAs....

Ste

A deliberate mistake, I'm afraid. I think I called him 'String' in the podcast as well. My second favourite way of referring to the former lead singer of The Police, after the Viz version, 'Gordon Sting'. Richard

Smith and Sniff

Is it Sting or String? Any chance of spare tickets to the Coventry live show for spotting that? 😃

Coldy

I've enjoyed the last few days on YouTube watching Maureen's exploits. According to Wikipedia (must be true) but I can't prove it she appeared on Jay Lenos Tonight Show, she has out done all is supposed petrolheads!

Cornish Rider

I can think of four places to try for a Scottish show. Glamis castle, the fella there has a classic car collection and hosts a vintage car show every summer. Glasgow transport museum. Alford transport museum and Dundee transport museum too

Scott Boulter

Why did this make me think of this podcast lol. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/226228133792411/?ref=facebook_story_share

Des Denman

I went to go leave a snippy comment on the P Diddy video about him binning the bike, but all the comments on there are from people remembering their dead loved ones...thought better of it

Robert Murdoch

Check out Maureen could of been off on YouTube it's spectacular

Cornish Rider

New patron here so please excuse me if this post is out of line. I live in the States but I’ll be in London next week (Nov. 14-18). Looking for suggestion of cool car things to do in or very near the city. Thank you!

Myron Vernis

Lads the fact Jonny forgot to mention that Vanilla Ica narrated that podcast is the best easter egg ever! I am in hysterics listening to this!!! 😂🤦

Ruaidhri Nash

Wad this ad libbed by James or some magnificently juvenile script work by Sniff?

Dom

And on the subject of weird all press photos, Opel seemed to be at the top of the line for this in the early 00's: a Zafira A with wintersports people that have stolen a man's clothing, an Agila A driver that's spraypainting grafiti on some guardrails, etc.

Regarding big guys (not all called B.I.G.) riding motorbikes, there's videos around of Eddie Hall aka The Beast on a Suzuki Hayabusa. Eddie Hall says that he weighs about 195 kilograms with his race leathers on, which is just a hair under 430 pounds. To offset his obvious disadvantage, said Hayabusa has been fitted with a Rotrex supercharger, so it now delivers 420 crank horsepowers.

Now retired, but when I was doing a lot of Motorway work, esp. M25, I used to keep a bag of Werther’s to hand. Never seemed to last long.

There are rumours that Michael Barrymore did a P-Diddy 'I'll be missing you' cover live on the air back in the 90s. The footage is yet to surface but based on his Coolio video it is probably very Alan Partridge https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_bIaF7P9WA

I have found this picture of a Garda Granada on flickr. The black grille puts it at 1981 or earlier and Shergar was kidnapped in early 1983, so it might be the right model that the criminals used. I must say though, this photo looks to be from the correct period, early 80s, and I am sure it is not a display car, given the general level of dirt on it. But the blue lights look quite LEDish and not what you would expect on a Garda Granada of that age. They have the amazing wheels which I think Rich was referring to. https://www.flickr.com/photos/58389952@N00/53129874507/in/pool-gardasiochana/

Michael Donnelly

Not car related at all but your Pinterest pronunciation comment, a colleague calls it "pee-interest" which suggests a whole different type of site.

Rich

Just adding that I keep a tin of Altoids in every car I own and I’m in my early 30s ! I only really do it because my dad always did and I just figured a car isn’t complete without them.

Tim Dawkins

My mum always has a pack of mint imperials in the glove box of her MG 4 EV Trophy

Jason Park

At least P-Diddy did his own crashing. DJ Khaled out here yelling his own name over footage of Evel Knievel wiping out.

Brendan McAleer

Is P-diddy-pff-nonsence in the bike 'accident' not him dying and then he is singing in the after life? Or am I trying to make sense of absolute bollocks?

Zoona

"E duss disaybled as well, so he's got lurrrds of patience" Wow.

That's not a large Ford ... F-RP = US Odyssey Right?

This FRV photo led to a memorable James May line, “she’s effectively saying you’ve given me the baby now get in the back”

Tom Miller

I always have a packet of Jakemens in the car. I'm 36.

James Ockenden

Don’t let Nio see that Honda photo. They’ll think that’s a great idea for their next-gen digital assistant dingus.

Ian Phillip

Just popped a glovebox mint (butter minto) as I listened this morning on the commute. I am 42.

Will Ellis

Show notes, more like slow notes

Andy Rushworth

That Kylie song is truly terrible..

Patrick Rennison

I'm hoping that the Stellantis show will be featured in The Hitman & Her.

Dave Law

The only 3 seat I've been in was a Vauxhall (nee Bedford) Midi van. There was an option to specify them with a 3rd seat in lieu of a storage tray. As it had a column mounted gearlever and pull out handbrake from the dash, there was no gap between passengers and driver like you'd have had in a 3 seater LDV Convoy or Traaaaaaahnnnsit with floor mounted gearlever and handbrake.

John Hammond

International GT man would clatter his elbow off that telly about 300 times on his way down to the south of France in the Espada

Jim Galbraith

I've had that driving school video on loop the past minute or so. I'm laughing like James May at that FRV photo
