Podcast 184 - Shergar Granada
Added 2023-11-05 18:00:04 +0000 UTCJonny has been learning about how a large Ford was involved in the kidnap of a famous race horse. Also in this episode, people in 1970s and ‘80s TV shows clinging to roll bars, untrustworthy clutch control, Richard being a silly boy in London, sitting very still listening to Sting, bump starting a car in the middle of the night, Puff Daddy’s inexplicable motorbike accident, the demise of the OAP travel sweet, cars with three abreast seating in the front, the Honda FR-V and a bizarre publicity photo, empty threats from Photobucket, a time limit on being able to say ‘back in the day’, the Volvo EX30, and news of the next Smith and Sniff live show.
Show notes are running a bit late this week and will be along on Monday.

2023-11-09 07:50:12 +0000 UTCThere is a golden tin of Simpkins Fruit Drops in the glove compartment/cubby hole of my Morris 8. For emergency purposes you understand (along with a sheet of caffeine pills).

2023-11-08 08:39:55 +0000 UTCIn the 70’s & 80’s when all the major car companies were introducing front wheel drive, they promoted it as being safer and having better traction and more efficient packaging. Now, rear motors are becoming the norm in electric vehicles and no one in the media is complaining about it. Is FWD inherently safer or was all that puffery covering the fact that it was cheaper and easier to manufacture?

2023-11-08 03:38:59 +0000 UTCJonny's "They were relying on the fog" seemed to come from nowhere and reminded me of this from the Fast Show https://youtu.be/q_a1wxqloEs?si=JDUsEnX2oyfYqxH3

2023-11-07 20:49:08 +0000 UTCThat new Volvo (which isn't an SUV)... I see they've gone with the no binnacle look above the steering wheel that is now fashionable... Another car where the driver will look like they're in Noddy's car when I see them in my rear view mirror. Don't believe me, wait till someone in a Model 3 is behind you, and paired with the low rake windscreen (previously discussed on S+S), with the steering wheel visible they will indeed look like they're driving Noddy's car. No shame on Noddy's car of course, it was a sweet sweet motor vehicle.

2023-11-07 09:33:28 +0000 UTCFlickR repeatedly email me to advise me that my account "is in violation of terms and conditions" and that they will delete all my photos. I've yet to do anything and certainly not succumbed to paying for premium membership. and they've not deleted any of my pictures.

2023-11-06 23:43:53 +0000 UTCI remember reading or hearing him say in an interview somewhere that the puff daddy motorcycle crash was actually filmed on some sort of treadmill or rolling road.

2023-11-06 13:43:55 +0000 UTCWhen I bought a Volvo estate I was strangely drawn to Werther's originals. At the time I was commuting from Bolton to cleakheaton. It was impressed by the endurance of a Werther's as it was able to last the entire mountain section of the m62 from Manchester to Yorkshire or vice versa. As long as I resisted the urge to chew of course.

2023-11-06 13:06:42 +0000 UTCI’ve only had a cursory look at the EX30 so far but immediately two things disappoint: the Tesla-style non dashboard and the tiny boot. I’M OOT.

2023-11-06 11:02:37 +0000 UTCI drive a fifteen year old Lexus RX400h (the one that looks like a Russian clog). and insist it goes to Lexus Stockport for a service, for the one and only reason that they leave a complimentary tin of Lexus branded boiled sweeties dusted in icing sugar in the car. Target audience I guess?

2023-11-06 09:44:55 +0000 UTCThe Irish police garda was at the time was a Ford Granada I believe I know they had some but for years Ford where the default police car in Ireland until Hyundai came along. Also kildare is the equestrian capital of the world so 24 hours a day there will be horse boxes on the road.

2023-11-06 07:01:26 +0000 UTCTo meet OAP Sweet Spec, said confectionery must only be consumed once it's been in the car for at least two years, and the constant hot/cold cycle has half fused them together, and merged all the flavours into something close to 'Peach Melba & Ham'.

2023-11-05 23:06:33 +0000 UTCMy brother called me in 2018 and asked if I wanted to go to a U2 concert the next night. Naturally, I said yes. It was great, of course. But the shocking thing was that the best song they played was released in 2017. Look up U2 playing "The Blackout" live. It's stellar.

2023-11-05 21:36:27 +0000 UTCI work for a pharmaceutical wholesaler and we stock those sweets in our warehouse (we stock anything you'd buy there, not just medicine). I guess OAP spec sweets probably sell more in a chemist than a petrol station.

2023-11-05 20:59:48 +0000 UTCGreat podcast. Regarding the P Diddy I’ll be missing you, the motorbike accident was actually accident and P diddy did actually lose control. He decided to keep that clip in the final video as thought it went with the theme of the video.

2023-11-05 18:57:46 +0000 UTCAt the ripe age of 27 I foolishly bought a 9 count display pack of Cavendish & Harvey boiled OAP sweets from Amazon, coffee flavoured. They're nice but get on your tits after a while and I realised I'd have no teeth left if I ate them all. I still have some unopened tins that supposedly expired in 2019, can sealed sugar really expire? I've got tickets to the Cov live show so maybe I'll bring some along as a present/science experiment.
